To not want to buy property for fear of WW3?

Hi all,

I’m finally getting to a stage where I’ve saved enough for a house deposit, earn well in a remote finance job and am willing to leave London to go to South Yorkshire and buy a house.

Then a niggling thought in my mind says, if your house is destroyed in WW3, all your savings will go down the drain and you will be left destitute.

I appreciate that it’s a crazy thought to have but Iran and Israel are at each other’s throats and Russia has no intention of backing out of Ukraine. When people had their cities bombed in the past, how did they survive?

Tell me if I’m being unreasonable? If so, why?

OP in the movies all the alien invaders decide to invade in remote parts of America. So that’s a consideration.

Thatusernamewastaken · 08/08/2024 08:28

Can just imagine the Supreme Leader of Iran gathering his generals in the war room and shouting "this, this is where we strike!" as he points to Mexborough on a map of the world.

newmum777 · 08/08/2024 08:31

I don’t think there would be another WW3 land war like we have had in the past. Sadly it would go nuclear quite quickly. Mortgages will be the last thing in our minds. Let’s hope this never happens!

Has someone been watching Threads? It was South Yorkshire (Sheffield) that got nuked .

EVERYWHERE got nuked in Threads - it just focused the drama on Sheffield.

I wonder if the OP has the right to live in America? They're not terribly generous with their visas.

MsNeis · 08/08/2024 08:57

Avoid big cities or places with important infrastructure. Also consider building some kind of refuge. Not much else you can do, unless you want to go the full prepper's route...

Killingoffmyflowersonebyone · 08/08/2024 09:06

Must be a wind up.

Can’t believe anyone thinks America is the place to go if WWIII breaks out.

Vizella · 07/08/2024 22:19

America- somewhere remote and with a good enough climate- no tornadoes, hurricanes or earthquakes.

Oh yes America. A lot safer than South Yorkshire 😂

This cannot be real.

If WW3 starts i doubt most of us will survive ?.

And you think planes will be running like normal 😱😂
AND if we go to War, America is right there too?!?!?!

Edited

Yes I'm sure if WW3 breaks out it will be easy to just book a one-way flight with Thomas Cook from South Yorkshire to America (the safe part though).

I can just imagine it, bombs dropping everywhere, cities being destroyed, people being killed in their thousands, and OP is sat in the airport lounge with a nice glass of fizz waiting for her flight 😂

OP,I recommend making yourself a nice cup of tea then sitting down and watching Threads,it's on Youtube. If that doesn't convince you to buy your house and live for the now nothing will.

I watched it in the 80,s it gave me nightmares for years .

I don’t recommend anyone watching this. I watched it in my teens and spent ten years in fear.

I have struggled with anxiety throughout my life and I feel like it would latch on to something in the news and be triggered.

I’m wondering if OP has anxiety?

I have done a lot of reading over the years to keep myself in ‘the present moment’ and suggest OP reminds herself that while she’s worrying she’s failing to notice that she’s living her best life now.

OpizpuHeuvHiyo · 08/08/2024 09:30

If WW3 starts you're much better off in south yorkshire than in London.

And if you own a place, even with a mortgage, you are much more secure in having somewhere to retreat to.

WW3 will either have battlefields far away from us and our main troubles will be shortages, protests and economic turmoil but mostly physically safe, or there will be nukes and it will be over very very quickly and your savings will be no use to you anyway. So really it's best to do whatever you would do if this wasn't a concern.

I’d probably just focus on getting a visa and moving there.

Buy one with a bunker

Funny enough, I've viewed a few houses in Yorkshire with Anderson shelters in good condition. Perfect for OP.

So just go now then

Downunderduchess · 08/08/2024 09:44

Your job is remote, chances are if your house is destroyed you’ll be in it, so you won’t need anywhere else to live. Buy the house & enjoy your life.

Blueberrymuffin8 · 08/08/2024 09:57

No one ever thought lockdown would happen but it did.

Anything is possible.

MargotEmin · 08/08/2024 10:27

Vizella · 07/08/2024 22:10

Not necessarily. If my savings are liquid, then I can pay to escape somewhere safer. If they’re locked in a mortgage then I’m no better off than a poor person.

The irony is that this kind of bonkers risk averseness would probably make you quite a good homeowner.

Kelly51 · 08/08/2024 10:30

Your thinking is quite skewed; firstly America isn't a safe landscape; divisive country, has nearly every natural disaster ie tornado etc, also how would you get there? secondly you're far more likely to be killed in an RTA despite you're 'oh I'll not get hit by a bus'

This made me laugh out loud 😂 Thanks for that!

My next step is to show this thread to my siblings and pretend I didn’t write it and see what their objective responses are.

Thanks so much everyone for helping me see sense 👍

If it genuinely was WW3, surely they'd be nowhere to go?!
Sorry but your mindset is bizarre. You can't live like that, it's unhealthy.

someonethatyoulovetoomuch · 08/08/2024 11:54

MyOtherCarisAVauxhallZafira · 07/08/2024 22:13

I live on the outskirts of London, in an area heavily bombed in ww2 especially, my house has survived two world wars and so has most of my neighbourhood.
So your panic around this even happening (ww3) is irrational, then add onto that even if there was a ww3 what are the chances of a random part of Yorkshire being targeted, it's not like you're moving to downing street, and then add on even by some crazy long shot ww3 does happen and Yorkshire undergoes the modern equivalent of the blitz, your house will still probably be fine.

Take it you’re not aware of the Sheffield Blitz then? Sheffield was heavily bombed in WW2, although granted the steelworks have all but gone now, but maybe the “enemy” will have a real hatred of hendersons relish. You can never be too careful when catastrophising about future events which may or may not happen and about which you have no control over.

OP - in the event of nuclear war you may as well die in the comfort of your own home than in an over priced rental. I doubt you’d be able to flee to America, and they will definitely be heavily involved if not instrumental in any world war which does break out.

Boomer55 · 08/08/2024 11:57

Live your life. However and whenever you die, there are no pockets in a shroud.🙄

Flowers4me · 08/08/2024 12:21

Not to undermine your worry OP, but some of the responses made me laugh. Seriously though, get to Yorkshire, its beautiful and you're near to the Peak District - there may be some caves to hide in if there's WW3.

NamelessNancy · 08/08/2024 12:21

Why is it that we have right wing media loudly decrying immigration, rioting on the streets, Farage in parliament, yet posters seem to think they can just choose where they are going to head to when the bombs start falling?
