DH’s attitude re riots etc upsetting and angering me

1000 replies

Pinkycloud · 07/08/2024 13:55

I feel so sick. Every time we talk about the riots, DH comes out with ‘well people are angry, etc’. He says he doesn’t condone violence, but there’s always a ‘but’. He voted Reform, I voted Lib Dem. I tell him he sounds racist in some of the comments he makes, which he vehemently denies.

He’s a loving, hardworking husband and father but… this! He is honestly a good man. I don’t know how to deal with it other than banning the subject. Has anyone else got very different political views from their spouse or partner?

It's so sad that you'd rather aggressively fight with everyone around you rather than join in with humour.

And no, I don't think people did realise schools would close when they did. And there were many who didn't believe schools and shops would close at all.

Perhaps when you've your PhD I might take you more seriously.

I think most people saw that it was fairly inevitable that schools would close. We had planning meetings in work about how to mitigate the impact of this if it happened. Your boss was probably just burying his head in the sand.

You do seem to put your partner on a bit of a pedestal. There isn't anything that you've said about him that makes him sound anything out of the ordinary but it's nice that you obviously think so much of him.

How do you know I haven’t?
And how would a PhD in, for the sake of argument, the Victorian Novel make more or less someone to be taken seriously about the 8n here t racism of these riots?
What a very odd attitude.

Edit: humour? What humour? This is a thread about riots. No humour is (or should be) in evidence.

@cardibach It's important to read Reform's policies on immigration. They don't want to stop immigration. They want to stop non-essential immigration. Over the last 2 years immigration has been 700,000 each year. The population of Coventry is around 500,000. Allowing immigration to continue at its present rate means adding to the UK a city significantly larger than Coventry each year. Is that really such a great idea? Controlling who we allow to settle in our country is surely the best thing we can do for those already here.

Exactly right, but it's fashionable and very easy to just shout racist it stops the discussion going further and simultaneously excuses any need to really understand what was proposed or dare I suggest read their manifesto.

I consider myself fortunate in the real world as I am mixed race with a 100% mash up of heritage in my genes I can have the discussion without someone jumping to a conclusion that I am racist or screaming half of the things that are on here.

He “doesn’t condone the violence” so how is he racist? He just points out “people are angry” which is correct isn’t it? You can have sympathy for a cause ie Gaza but hate what they did to Isreal with killing civilians) or say illegal immigrants coming over the channel from France (a safe, first world nato and EU member). I support lots and lots of legal migration (families and not 90@ single young men) but do not accept people leaving France should be allowed in and use our limited resources. Therefore I despise what these idiot rioters are doing but understand their anger that no one listens to their concerns. Out of curiosity am i a racist too in your view as well? Genuinely interested.

I don't need to read anything you've said here, because I'm sure you're not being completely open with how extreme your views are.

The fact you used that 'ooh, not so accepting of other viewpoints now, don't call us racist just because we think blah blah blah' tells me everything I need to know.

It's my understanding that under LGA rules he would need to be given a custodial sentence of more than 3 months to be disqualified, otherwise he's there until the next election.

Judging by the sentences given out his should be longer than 3 months. There is one man sentenced today to 20 months for stirring up hatred online. This councillor was in my opinion as bad if not worse as he was inciting murder. Will his sentencing be broadcast live I wonder?

Since we have a falling birth rate and a demographic timebomb with ageing, it’s probably ok, yes. Who decides what’s ‘essential’ in their eyes? I suspect it’s cod3 for ‘not brown’. They’re racists.

And there’s the problem! Even a moderate who supports LEGAL immigration and wants more is called “extreme” without you even listening to my point of view! You are as bad as those idiots on the far right and you can’t even see it - huge unconscious bias against anyone who doesn’t believe with your view point. No tolerance for subtlety or nuance. Embsrsssing.

Talking about immigration? They aren’t talking. They are rioting. And yes, they are racists.
Reform want to stop immigration altogether. That’s fantasy in practical terms, would be destructive anyway, and is absolutely a policy arising from racism. Voting for them is at the very least condoning racism.
I’m getting a bit sick of people bleating they ‘want to talk about immigration’ when they mean they don’t want to have to have people they perceive as foreign anywhere near them. Of course there’s a discussion to be had about managing immigration, particularly as global warming is going to create more refugees, but it isn’t going to be done at the end of a brick and it can’t be done with racist motives. Too many people who say they are ‘concerned’ aren’t prepared to actually discuss.

What they actually said was a freeze on non essential immigration.

ATenShun · 09/08/2024 16:16

RedPoster · 09/08/2024 11:00

Again, when have you tried to have impactful conversations? And I don’t mean with your mates, when have you engaged with any politicians in a meaningful way to discuss these concerns?

All these people saying they have been oppressed haven’t actually attempted to discuss these things with their own or any other MPs.

What on earth do you mean haven't engaged with politicians. People with legitimate concerns have spoken to local MP's. Have contacted the media. Posted all over social media. And all to often were met with responses like on here... But it's racist to say who can come and who can't.

So you’ve been listened to then? And people didn’t agree with you? That’s not the same as not being heard. Calling asylum seekers ‘illegals’ and making digs about some immigrants being a threat to our culture is a good sign of a racist usually.

Asylum seekers are legal immigrants. Completely legal.

Your quote was:

That is blatantly untrue. They want to freeze (or stop for a period) non essential immigration.

And they get to decide what that is? Sounds like a complete stop of any immigration they don’t like (ie of brown people) to me.

OK then lets call it 'haven't been heard' or no action taken on their/my concerns. If there are enough of us with these concerns that haven't been heard, don't be surprised when it causes unrest.

Where has that idea come from? If a person is an amazing surgeon, I and the majority of people don't care what colour he/she is. If a person is an exceptional engineer, again don't care what his/her ethnicity is.

If a person is a gents hairdresser with 3 dependents. Again don't give a monkeys what colour he/she is. We have sufficient of those. So sorry, you can't come in. That's not racism.

In the last 15 years approximately 5m people have come to the UK. For context, the previous 5m people came over a period of about 60 years. We cannot possibly keep building houses, infrastructure and support services needed for this level of immigration, it's just not possible.

These beliefs have been agreed with on many occasions over the past few years. Hence recent immigration bills, Rwanda bill, Illegal migration act.

These have been thwarted by countless challenges and delays by people who believe their own agenda is the only correct one.

Thwarted how? The government who you say introduced them had a massive majority. They tried and couldn’t because they were impossible/illegal. Nobody except reality thwarted them.
If the majority of people agreed, the election result would have been different.

The illegal migration act gained royal assent in 2023, so it did have democratic approval by all sides. Since then it has been thwarted by groups with their own agenda.
