DH’s attitude re riots etc upsetting and angering me

1000 replies

Pinkycloud · 07/08/2024 13:55

I feel so sick. Every time we talk about the riots, DH comes out with ‘well people are angry, etc’. He says he doesn’t condone violence, but there’s always a ‘but’. He voted Reform, I voted Lib Dem. I tell him he sounds racist in some of the comments he makes, which he vehemently denies.

He’s a loving, hardworking husband and father but… this! He is honestly a good man. I don’t know how to deal with it other than banning the subject. Has anyone else got very different political views from their spouse or partner?

I agree it should always have been means tested but not at the rate of £218 a week for a single person and £332.95 for a couple. That’s not my definition of a wealthy pensioner. She’s opted for the cheapest form of means testing by tying it to pension credit. It needed more thought.

My Dad gets the £218 a week after working full time for 50 years. My sister and me have each transferred him £150 to cover the winter fuel allowance he would have had.

Mutual respect and tolerance. Racists don’t manage that.

No, show us in their manifesto what is against those British policies. You just saying the line racists doesn't make it so.

I’m not rising to this. You know they are racist. They had a shit ton of racist candidates. Farage has tweeted racist stuff he’s now blaming on Tate. They are racist. Racism isn’t compatible with British values.

You mean you would sacrifice the happiness and security of your children, your parents, your husband on the alter of looking after everyone else? So you’d happily pay more taxes at the expense of your children having a holiday, good education, a nice house? I just don’t get that. I will always vote for the party who provides security and happiness for those I love.

Yes, I am from a deprived area and had free school meals/free school uniform after my parents’ divorce just after Margaret Thatcher was elected Prime Minister. I’m happy to pay slightly more tax so that children in poverty are slightly better off - also, my DD had an excellent state education.

There is absolutely NO excuse for the violent thuggery we're seeing in the demonstrations in our cities. It's truly disgusting that people of colour are afraid to go out of their homes. I have lots of friends from many different countries. They're not associates. They're friends. And I'd die in a ditch for each one of them before I'd let one of those thugs near them.
However, some of us feel that no political party is dealing with the fact that there has to be an upper limit on the number of people who can settle here. We don't have the funds or the infrastructure to allow in such numbers.
We spend 8 million pounds every day on accommodation for asylum seekers. 56 million pounds a week. We need this money.

  1. Our schools are in a terrible state. In my grandson's year 1, 2 children had English as their first language. This has a huge knock on effect on their education. Not all asylum seekers are teachers or TAs.
  2. Our hospitals can't deal with the number of patients needing beds. Reading about it is one thing - but when the NHS refuses to sort out your husband's painful hernia unless it's a medical emergency because they don't have room, it hits close to home. Not all asylum seekers are medics.
  3. In 2023 there were 67,000 applications from asylum seekers. Where are they going to live? Not all asylum seekers are builders - but they all need homes. I live near a small town with a population of nearly 20,000. Every year we'd need to build 3 little towns like ours just to house people arriving here. Rents have rocketed. House prices have rocketed. It's supply and demand - easy to say until your 30 year old with a decent job can't afford to leave home.
It's rather sad that every person who wants to come here, can't come here, but there has to be a cap on numbers. And it really isn't racist or far right to point that out. There's no way I'd protest on the streets about this, but I'm a realist and politically homeless. The Conservatives didn't deal with it and it looks like Labour is going to be equally useless. Perhaps this is why so many have voted Reform....A terrible situation.

And just to add to this, in today's Times, Lord Green writes that 'The Conservative's legacy was net migration of about 700,000 a year for their last two calendar years'. For comparison, Cardiff's population is 492,000. We can't keep such a wide open door policy - it's just not sustainable.

One of the British values we teach children in schools. If we don’t tolerate different faiths and beliefs, that is racism.

Here are the key manifesto pledges on immigration:

Freeze Non-Essential Immigration.
Smart immigration can target the essential skills our economy needs such as doctors, nurses and successful business people, earning above the average salary.
Stop the Boats with our 6 Point Plan.
Recognise a national Security Threat. Leave the European Convention on Human Rights: Zero Illegal Immigrants to be Resettled in the UK; Offshore Processing for Illegal Arrivals; New Department of Immigration; Pick up Migrants out of Boats and Take Back to France. (We are legally allowed to do this under international treaties).
Secure Detention for all Asylum Seekers.
Asylum claims that arrive though safe countries will be processed rapidly offshore in British Overseas Territories. This will stop the scandal of undocumented asylum seekers absconding to work illegally or commit crime.
Immediate Deportation for Foreign Criminals.
Deport foreign nationals immediately after their prison sentence ends. Withdraw citizenship from immigrants who commit significant crime.
Restrict Student Dependents.
Introduce new visa rules for international students and their dependents. Only international students with essential skills can remain in the UK when their study ends. Close down fake courses and abusive immigration schemes.
Stop the Illegal Working Scandal.
Local wages have been slashed because of cheap, undocumented, illegal labour that undermines British workers. The pro-immigration establishment has not enforced the rules. Significant penalties will be imposed on companies and directors that breach these rules.

Where in that is racism?

Of course there's no racism in their manifesto. They will have had PR people all over it ensuring it comes across as the opposite. We vote for individual candidates that represent the party. Unfortunately some of the candidates are racist. They have to be especially careful in the public eye with what they say but its in them. The worst part though is the misogyny.

Are you trying to break the record for how many times you can shout ‘racist’ on this thread? Every argument put to you, you just respond by shrieking ‘racist’. Which is a very lazy way of responding to anything. Take a deep breath and try using a bit more critical thinking in your responses.

They’re racists. How many of their candidates had to be dropped because someone else became aware of their racist comments? Reform were happy with them until publicity made them drop them.

A bit like Labour masking antisemitism or trying to dumb down the far left idiots in their party? It will work for a short while, but will always out.

There aren’t any legitimate protestor. Protesting what? Why. These riots were set off by racist misinformation. They aren’t ’anti immigration protests’ they are racist riots.

Greenshed · 08/08/2024 21:21

I think, Pinkycloud that the way forward is to calmly, but consistently, counter his arguments with your own, well thought out, balanced counter arguments. Don’t shout, or yell. Acknowledge where he might be coming from (without agreeing), and why he might be thinking what he thinks, but point out all that is good about this country and who has made it good and continues to do so, i.e. people from all backgrounds, cultures and walks of life.
Does he know anyone from another culture? Does he like them or “other” them or say, “yes, but, they’re different - I know them”, which, if that latter argument, you can say, “yes, well, there are friends we are yet to meet who may be from a different background/culture, or our children will meet friends from different backgrounds/cultures - will you “other” them, too, or view them as ‘alright’ because you know them? Also, ask him “just how are they different?”.
It’s so, so sad when some view other human beings as lesser mortals because of where they (or their ancestors) are from, or because their skin tone differs, or their language is different, or their faith (or none) differs, or how they look differs. The shameful side of human nature, I’m afraid.

In what way is replacing the European Human rights convention and replacing it with a British human rights act racist? Which is what was proposed.
Fake courses. Colleges, Schools, Universities offering fake education courses to get round immigration rules, or you know the law, should of course be stopped.

Neither of those things are unreasonable nor against British values.

Well, people are angry! But as long as he condemns the violence I don't think there is any harm in acknowledging that....

I'd struggle with the fact he voted reform as well....but he has a right to vote for who he wants. Opinions are opinions and everyone is entitled to their own private thoughts, but it's those who speak and act radically who cause the problems.
