DH’s attitude re riots etc upsetting and angering me

1000 replies

Pinkycloud · 07/08/2024 13:55

I feel so sick. Every time we talk about the riots, DH comes out with ‘well people are angry, etc’. He says he doesn’t condone violence, but there’s always a ‘but’. He voted Reform, I voted Lib Dem. I tell him he sounds racist in some of the comments he makes, which he vehemently denies.

He’s a loving, hardworking husband and father but… this! He is honestly a good man. I don’t know how to deal with it other than banning the subject. Has anyone else got very different political views from their spouse or partner?

" I do think we might get further in stopping it in future if we recognise the whys rather than just pontificate about bad, stupid people which let’s face it is mostly just a way of reassuring others we are good and clever".

Absolutely nailed it @Poppycornfields

Compared to people with swastika tattoos trying to murder vulnerable people I am good and clever. It’s a very low bar.

JazbayGrapes · 07/08/2024 18:05

I agree with the Christmas tree thing.
Not everyone is a Christian so why should there be loads of Christian displays everywhere in public spaces at Christmas. Christmas really is over the top. Christians can celebrate Christmas privately in their own house

You can't be serious

the DH wrecked it by becoming a racist bigot voting for utter filth like Farage.

Stop being a little dictator and grow up. And while you’re at it, stop advocating for families to
split up. Shameful. Just shameful.

I can see how the murder of three children is going to incite anger on a mass scale.

It was predictable.

It's not right but it was predictable.

Murders spark outrage

The murder was committed by a British man, who is reported to be Christian. So why would that spark this violence targeted against Muslims and immigration lawyers etc?

And approx 2 women a week are murdered by their partners or ex partners. I don’t see the rioters out there for any of them. I bet they haven’t done a bloody thing about wide spread domestic abuse either.

SundayBloodySunday · 07/08/2024 18:07

You know OP, I'd have totally been with @GoldenPombear a few months ago. I've noticed more than one of my nearest and dearest saying things that are really out of character. I really think the insidious creep of fascist propaganda is affecting really quite sensible individuals. I'm finding it quite upsetting and difficult to contend with.

I couldn't continue the relationship OP.

When was he radicalized? Was it recent and do you think there is a way back for him?

🤣

Thatladdo · 07/08/2024 18:09

Plain denialism from some quarters inattentional blindness from others, seems theres no chance of a reasonable understanding ever being reached and these civil troubles will increase until the armed forces are called in, then it will simmer with sporadic outbursts from both sides.
At least the MP's are enjoying their summer holiday away from westminister undisturbed, it will probably prove a costly break though.

How has that outrage about the murder of little girls by a Christian manifested as attacks on mosques?

Because it always goes that way.

Humans are predictable and often react in the same way.

A murder happens. Usually of an innocent child.

A foreign person (or a person of foreign parents ) did it.

Humans then go and blame (all foreigners) for it.

It doesn't make sense. And it never does. And it's not right

But it has happened so so many times i
over and over in history.

Humans never seem to be able to separate the individual, from the group.

Examples in history:

There was an IRA bomb put in England.

Reaction at the time - hate all the irish. All the irish are responsible.

Another example - The British Invaded ireland.

Reaction- hate all the British. Even if they werent born at the time. Every British person was responsible.

The 911 attacks in America. Carried out by a group of Muslim people.

The Reaction was - hate all the Muslims, every single Muslim in America is responsible.

This recent murder in England- a "foreigner' murders children. Reaction - hate all the foreigners , all foreigners are responsible.

Humans always react in the same way

Cesarina · 07/08/2024 18:10

I hate rioting. Even 'though I'm of "mature" years, riots make me afraid, upset, unsettled, and disgusted with the perpetrators and participants.
I have a hypothesis about why these riots are happening - not based on any specialist knowledge or qualifications, I must point out.
It seems to be accepted that when those 3 girls were murdered in Southport, misinformation was spread across social media that the killer was a recently arrived asylum-seeker. And that this information was the fuel the rioters needed to head to Southport.
Then it became clear, quite quickly, that this information was totally incorrect.
But the rioting continued in many other, unrelated places, and may not be over yet.
So why is that, when we now know that the murders were not carried out by an asylum-seeker?
I have a feeling that the rioters are trying to destabilise the new Labour government, or at least send an implicit message that people are unhappy with the scale of immigration and assume that Labour will be a "soft touch".
The riots are a way of warning the government that if it doesn't deal with the issue, unrest is what will happen.
As I've said, this is just a hypothesis and I have no idea whatsoever if there is any truth in it.

Maybe YOU'LL listen to ME if I throw 2 bricks through your window. And then to get the attention back to you you'll have to drive a car through my front room etc.

It escalates. The idea that one person is more angry/more justified than another just because they are acting violently is a complete fallacy. I do think a lot of work needs to be done in terms of integrating disparate communities, actually dealing with the chaos that is the Home Office, helping poorer communities. Labour have been in power for a few weeks so haven't had that much time in fairness. But you can't let that excuse violence and attempted murder. Otherwise it becomes a "who can prove they are the angriest" competition.

Surely he recognises that the rioters don’t represent people on the whole. The rioters are a very specific subgroup whose purpose it’s to disrupt or in some cases just go along for a jolly.

Having seen the rioters who have been arrested many seem to be already familiar with being on the wrong side of the law… I think lots of people are concerned about things going on in the country and world but these rioters I think just want an excuse to let loose and be violent tbh, if they’re meant to be the saviours of the UK then God help us seriously!

ScribblingPixie · 07/08/2024 18:11

A small village near us has a big hotel. The illegal immigrants were housed there for 16 weeks. In those weeks there were three rapes and one knifing.

In the hotel?

I most definitely am.

A lot of Christians that I know think that Christmas is celebrated completely over the top these days,

it goes on for about four months these days. Its a religious celebration that is out of control.

And other religions don't want to see Christmas trees and decorations and Jesus figurines everywhere. We need to think of other religions in the community

TheGreenKnight · 07/08/2024 18:12

He voted Reform and you voted Liberal Democrat! Couldn't be much further apart in philosophy.

I was struck by a comment by Brendan Cox (husband of murdered MP Jo Cox), on Radio Four. "Nigel Farage is Tommy Robinson in a suit".

The problem is that clumsy attempts to understand are being automatically interpreted as racist . To be honest I even hesitated to write that down because I don’t want to be jumped on.

But generally speaking - and not just about this - we do better as a society when we do try to understand why things happen, rather than just condemn them as appalling acts by the terminally stupid - which they sort of are, but that’s the lazy way of looking at it.

I hate what’s happening but I do think we might get further in stopping it in future if we recognise the whys rather than just pontificate about bad, stupid people which let’s face it is mostly just a way of reassuring others we are good and clever.

The whys = vulnerable people coerced into being the puppets of the radical far right, which have flourished because successive governments have encouraged people to blame immigrants rather than them for the failings of this country in a desperate attempt to stay in power and fill their own pockets with money they don't even need.

This. What is happening is awful, frightening and disgusting and my heart absolutely goes out to all the innocent people scared to leave their homes because of this. However we didn’t get here overnight and an awful lot of people who absolutely are not racist are concerned about our immigration policy, so much so that the majority of the country voted to leave the EU with promises of a different path when it comes to immigration (look how that’s turned out…). Using the deaths of 3 innocent babies by a deranged lunatic to forward their agenda is disgusting but recognising that SOME people are affected by immigration is not racist and trying to understand the other side and trying to recognise how we got here is a good thing and will hopefully lead to a resolution.

People are not affected by immigration. People are affected by 20 years of underfunding public services and not building housing. It was always going to happen unless you sterilised everyone and killed off more old people than covid, because if you blanket blocked all access into the country by anyone, even for holidays, you'd still have the same problem.

You could easily make houses available and more affordable by only allowing British citizens who live in the UK to buy them. That would stop India and Russia owning half of London from a distance for a start.

Murders often spark riots.

I never said it was right.

I said that it was completely predictable.

I was living in Ireland when the murder of Ashling Murphy, sparked riots all over the country.

Human behaviour follows the same patterns

Exactly 🤣

RedPoster · 07/08/2024 18:18

I say send the army in.
Round them all up with guns.
Then stick them all into a rocket and send them into space - we needed volunteers to go to Mars, they’ve just volunteered.
They can all hang out together, no foreigners getting in that spaceship.
Au revoir!

Tartantotty · 07/08/2024 18:20

Politics can mess up relationships these days, as we've passed a time when we can debate and discuss them without high octane anger and violence. Look at how civil wars have destroyed communities.

This rioting is unforgivable, but it's important to try to understand the root problem/s, triggered mainly by disaffected young working class men from disadvantaged backgrounds who feel forgotten and demonised by society and government....

Give your husband space to process his views and refrain from debate.

Brexshit was absolutely “won” on people’s frustration with what they perceive to be many young males arriving by the score - the Brexshit voters were lied to.

It would be interesting to see what regions voted to leave- to see if they were in the poorer areas?
