The winter opening is new - they trialled it last year for very limited hours (weekend mornings only). No news on whether it will return this winter. There was a gap between the dog weekends and the winter opening during which the pool was deep cleaned (I have no idea what this involved but I swam throughout the winter, including on Christmas Day, and there wasn’t a hint of dog fur or poop to be seen).

The sauna has moved on unfortunately. It was a fab addition.

My understanding was that the Lido did not want the sauna to continue.

That’s a story for another thread! There’s quite enough frothing on this one already.

And as for the White Cliffs…

Longtimelurkerfinallyposts · 06/08/2024 10:39

why do posters insist on repeating false information on this thread?

the lido is not 'drained' and 'closed' over the winter!
it is open for (human) swimming every weekend from October onwards - after the Dogtember events have happened

Oh stop it. Use your internet if you don't believe it. It gets drained and cleaned after the dog event. Its all there on google.

LilBowWow · 06/08/2024 10:56

Although yours sounds a lot like the don’t worry your pretty little head, business matters are better left to the mostly male managers

🤣 massive reach there. Unusual for the anti dog people to embellish stories or make stuff up to add weight to their otherwise flimsy points.

LoremIpsumCici · 06/08/2024 10:47

We can all assume anything we want to, that’s the beauty of an assumption.

You can assume the managers know what they are doing in terms of not just making money but for risk assessment and mitigation of the real health risks this event has.

I can assume there is unmet demand for lessons in kayaking, swimming, and lifeguarding that could make equivalent money without the added risks.

If I’m cute with my assumptions, then you are cute with yours too.

Although yours sounds a lot like the don’t worry your pretty little head, business matters are better left to the mostly male managers.

This thread! Now " male business managers " crowbarred in. You're ridiculous.

Do you run a Lido? Do you book events?

But anyhow you sound like you know better. But people on here generally do. A

My local Lido runs a dog event too. Sounds like they work.

Which part is a “massive reach”? I was told to assume the managers all know better and the directors of Saltdean currently are 100% male:

  • David Bailey, Solicitor
  • Paul Burgess, Town Planner
  • Derek Chester, no occupation
  • Derek Leaver, Company Director
  • Richard Lloyd-Owen, Accountant
  • Gaston Paul Mallia, Designer

And?

Do you run a Lido? You haven't answered the question?

sunglassesonthetable · 06/08/2024 11:09

You are so trying to turn this into something it isn't. Its blindingly obvious that wasn't what the poster meant.

Write to the male managers. Explain to them what they're doing wrong.

Do you run a lido?
What are your qualifications in business?
Have you read the saltdean planning and accounts?
Do you know the operating costs of it?
Do you know the market surveys?
Do you know what fundraising they do?
Do you know what government grants they can apply for?

Answer the questions….

Demanding answers to questions about my person is just another way to not engage in discussion.

LoremIpsumCici · 06/08/2024 09:21

Don’t be so condescending, I read the entire Dogtember webpage and the swim section of the lido webpage before any of my comments.

I think it is disgusting and a health risk to any dog owners swimming with the dogs. I think the lido could raise money in a way that keeps the pools reserved for humans only- as a pp suggested half price tickets for off season swimming. Perhaps swim lessons for school age kids. Or open to kayaking clubs to do lessons in water safety, rolling, and rescue as well. Or lifeguard training classes. So much can be done in the off season other than catering to dogs who already have an entire beach to use.

It’s arrogant to assume those who think it’s awful “can’t read” or are unaware of the details.

But if the dogs go in after it's closed to the public and then drained and cleaned before the next season, it makes no sense to object! As for health risk to owners, this has been going on for years and everyone still seems to be alive, so...? It raises 250k for the Lido over a handful of weekends. What else could they do that would raise that sort of money so quickly?

Your objections make no sense whatsoever.

I grew up riding around on bikes with no helmet and in cars with no seatbelts and on planes with smoking…and I’m still alive as are most of my generation.

Your ankle high bar for safety is what makes no sense.

Again, bags of money isn’t a good reason to accept any level of risk. That sort of thinking is what has caused most of our economic and environmental crises.

sunglassesonthetable · 06/08/2024 11:20

@LoremIpsumCici You're getting cuter with every reply.

I don't run a Lido but I don't presume an idea I see replicated across many of the same businesses is a poor one. And that without experience, my idea is obviously better. Like you do.

But then you haven't answered the question, so maybe you do run a Lido.

ticktickticktickBOOM · 06/08/2024 09:06

Yes this has been said many times now on this thread. We get it.

What I don't get is why the pool is specially reserved for dogs in September when they could be making money out of the thousands of people that are only just discovering the lido is open?

September is pretty warm.

I think they need to change this dog promotion - push it back to October when it's colder. Info about the lido is getting out and locals want to visit once the summer tourist season is over. Now we hear it is going to be reserved for DOGS!

The pool should be for humans to enjoy in September.

The dog weekends don't start until mid-September. (Sep 15.) The reason it runs for three weeks right then is because they want to catch the milder weather to make sure people come, because Dogtember is a really, really important month for the Lido, which is a charity. They raise more money from those few weekends than all the previous season's swimming, about 250k. If it got too cold, and rainy, the event would be less popular and they wouldn't get the same money.

It's almost as if they thought it all through!!!!

Plus, the doggies are people too and they deserve a nice swim and some doggie ice cream.

Ah, well presumption is a step up from assumption.
This is a forum for expressing opinions. You are assuming it’s a great idea. I am presuming it is a risky idea that puts money ahead of health & safety. Nothing I have read has convinced me otherwise.

We have replicated all sorts of wildly popular but very bad ideas.
Humans are known for this as a particular talent of ours.
Currently you can find a few thousand new ones on TikTok which kill off a few people each week.

No. Dogs are not 'people'.
Same as dogs are not children and don't need to be compared to them in every thread that isn't pro dog.

(Haven't read the full thread so no idea if someone has made the old faithful "I'd rather share with dogs than kids!" comment, but I wouldn't be surprised if they have!).

Mercurial123 · 06/08/2024 11:28

The OP is stirring the pool does get drained, deep cleaned and a water change BUT some people just love to complain, especially when it involves dogs. Save your anger for the next dog thread it will be along in a day or two...

To think having dogs in Saltdean lido is utterly disgusting?

Oops that was genuine oversight. When I initially wrote I did say mostly male so I had it right the first time. I haven’t created a derail the accusations of making up “mostly male” and being called ridiculous or massive stretch when I was right in the first place and then had to prove it is the derail, if you’d all checked and seem yep, they are mostly male and not mistakenly said I had made it up we wouldn’t have had a detail.
