They let dogs into the lido with people on weekends 🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢

https://www.saltdeanlido.co.uk/dogtember

This is such a wind up OP. Totally misrepresents what is actually happening.😂

Posters coming out frothing thinking dogs are routinely attending swimming sessions. God alive.

LilBowWow · 06/08/2024 10:03

It’s the “dog owners are so selfish and entitled” whilst whinging that not every single business or park is set up for their needs and their needs only that gets me. Just don’t go, you and your kids will be fine missing out occasionally.

FluffyLemonClouds · 06/08/2024 10:06

I assume they change the water after the dog session ?

pictoosh · 06/08/2024 10:06

This thread is going to run and run. It's got dogs, it's got hygiene...and these two things make mumsnetters very angry indeed.

sunglassesonthetable · 06/08/2024 10:06

And guess what. No one is missing out. Its an extra for dogs and owners.

Well done @llamajohn your work here is done.

A total misrepresentation to get everyone going.👏

perfectstorm · 06/08/2024 10:11

So after the season ends, they have a special set of swims for dogs and owners, by ticket only, before the pool is drained and deep cleaned?

What a nice idea. And I say that as someone who wouldn't like sharing a pool with loads of other people's dogs, either.

I really hope the people freaking out never swim in beaches around the UK. Or at least if they do, never read up on the cleanliness of those waters. A mildly chlorinated outside pool is going to be a LOT cleaner than seawater around many British estuaries.

A dog owner neighbour attending the Lido swim PARKED ON MY DRIVE. (See attached diagram.)

MeMyseIfAndl · 06/08/2024 10:15

I understand it's after the main season, and will be cleaned, but it is still utterly repulsive to me. Gross. Like all dog things.

Animals. Dogs are no more repulsive than any other animal

LlynTegid · 06/08/2024 10:25

I would steer clear myself, but as others have said, it is at the end of the season. Would be better in my opinion if the pool could open year round as I think the one at Parliament Hill fields does, and there seems space for a sauna on the grounds.

You’ll be ok though won’t you? With just not going?

SurferRona · 06/08/2024 10:30

Idontjetwashthefucker · 06/08/2024 09:29

So why aren't they doing any of this then?

@Idontjetwashthefucker and @LoremIpsumCici ….so we can assume the people who run the charity, and charity trustees, will be VERY aware of the challenges in raising enough funds to keep solvent and that these sessions work in raising them money. Most ideas- and they will have tested them all, won’t. @LoremIpsumCici thats very cute that you think your suggestions would work instead (I mean, kayakers wanting to learn eskimo rolls are undoubtedly knocking down the doors of every lido in the country, offering tens of thousands of pounds to boot🙄🤪) but perhaps best left to those who know what they are doing? Good job you won’t need to go to the lido, isn’t it!

WonderingAboutBabies · 06/08/2024 10:30

Sigh, so much misinformation, and lots of correct posters are getting ignored.

Main points:

  • Humans swim in Lido without dog access almost all year around
  • At end of Summer season, pool is drained
  • Before pool is drained, dogs are allowed in with owners (ticketed events)
  • Pool is closed to general public.
  • Dog events raise thousands for the Lido and various charities.
  • Pool is cleaned and re-filled.
  • Repeat every year.

Win for humans (swim all year round in a clean, dog-free pool)
Win for dogs (swim once a year before pool is drained)
Win for the Lido (raises money to keep Lido open)

Luckily, they are not compulsory swim sessions.

Longtimelurkerfinallyposts · 06/08/2024 10:39

why do posters insist on repeating false information on this thread?

the lido is not 'drained' and 'closed' over the winter!
it is open for (human) swimming every weekend from October onwards - after the Dogtember events have happened

SunshineOceanAndOranges · 06/08/2024 10:41

I love animals and would love a dog (don't have one for logistical reasons at the moment), but this is possibly the most unhygienic idea I've ever come across! For those pointing out that humans wee in pools - it sounds disgusting but unless you have a bladder infection, urine is STERILE, a dog's mouth however is absolutely full of harmful bacteria. Swimming alongside their slobber would put me right off... and I'm sure the chlorine can't be good for their skin or their gut health...

Hobbes8 · 06/08/2024 10:43

The winter opening is new - they trialled it last year for very limited hours (weekend mornings only). No news on whether it will return this winter. There was a gap between the dog weekends and the winter opening during which the pool was deep cleaned (I have no idea what this involved but I swam throughout the winter, including on Christmas Day, and there wasn’t a hint of dog fur or poop to be seen).

The sauna has moved on unfortunately. It was a fab addition.

Sibilantseamstress · 06/08/2024 10:44

I’m surprised they drain the pool, but as they do- what is there to complain about?

It’s an extra at the end of the season that dogs and owners really enjoy which raises a not insignificant sum. 🤷🏻‍♀️

It's closed for 2 weeks, drained and cleaned before humans can use it through the winter. Kids aren't allowed.

Fruitloopi · 06/08/2024 10:45

Are people forgetting that chlorine kills

off organisms and bacteria in the water. It's only occasionally so have time to clean in-between.

My friend works at a dog hydrotherapy pool and much like human pool they test the water twice a day and add chlorine/ chemicals accordingly then every so often shock the pool with a high dose, run back washes to clean the sand filter and manually remove the hair from the filter system trap. Any heavier dirt particles settle on the pool floor overnight so that gets vacumned up first thing daily by robovac.
Dogs are showered before going in the pool and then after to rinse off the chlorine water. Loads of hair comes off some dogs so they scoop that during the day and it will all clump against sump in morning if not gone through filter system.

Very occasionally they do have a code brown because they are dealing with more dogs who may have paralysis or nerve deficits but they encourage owners to make sure they've toileted recently to reduce that risk as it means cancelling the rest of the days clients to shock the pool and let the water filter. They don't allow owners to swim with the dogs there but the hydrotherapists are in the water for hours per day and have let their kids swim in it while closed.

I took the dog for hydrotherapy and I have had a dip in the pool myself. I was surprised it didn't have a strong chlorine smell and no stingy eyes like when took kids swimming commented that they must use more chemicals at the public pool, but friend told me its from the process of chlorine reacting with all the nasty stuff so clearly there was a lot for it to deal with in a pool full of kids 🤢

We can all assume anything we want to, that’s the beauty of an assumption.

You can assume the managers know what they are doing in terms of not just making money but for risk assessment and mitigation of the real health risks this event has.

I can assume there is unmet demand for lessons in kayaking, swimming, and lifeguarding that could make equivalent money without the added risks.

If I’m cute with my assumptions, then you are cute with yours too.

Although yours sounds a lot like the don’t worry your pretty little head, business matters are better left to the mostly male managers.
