It’s an end of season one off… not every weekend!!!!

MoggyP · 06/08/2024 09:22

I think it’s a brilliant way of getting extra revenue to the Lido in the autumn.

It wouldn’t be done if normal outdoors swimming was still profitable after mid-September

x88mph · 06/08/2024 09:24

My local pool does this on the last day of the season before it's drained for the winter. I love it.

TheGander · 06/08/2024 09:24

Of course it’s disgusting. Dog owners lack perspective, think their pets are sacred and businesses are cashing in.

NowImNotDoingIt · 06/08/2024 09:25

@ticktickticktickBOOM because it would be fully shut otherwise. Presumably the people running made those decisions using actual financial data and previous experience of what's viable or not to decide opening times. You know, a bit more than "well it's still warm in September ". That's how they decided when to end the season. Now they're simply adding a few weekends when they'd be shut anyway to make some extra money. Which again, would only happen if it was financially viable and offsets the costs of being open those extra few weekends.

Rather than relying on a random hope that Suzie and her family might decide to finally turn up on September 19.

OnePeachCrow · 06/08/2024 09:26

My newfoundland puppy will love this next year!

Shan5474 · 06/08/2024 09:26

They seem to be quite popular and as others have said they don’t run normal sessions in between. I think it was a strange decision to spend millions on a pool that’s only open for a few months of the year, at least they can make a bit more money before it closes for 6+ months

Sibilantseamstress · 06/08/2024 09:26

NoisyDenimShaker · 06/08/2024 08:39

Wait. I know this place, and this is not accurate. Dogs are NOT allowed in the Lido, except in a short break between swim seasons when it's closed to the public.

The Lido summer swim season runs until September 12, and is then closed to the public. The dogs can then swim in the Lido at weekends from September 12-October 6. Owners can get into the pool with the dogs. But the general public are not allowed; you have to be a dog owner and buy a special ticket in advance.

After Dogtember finishes, the pool is drained, cleaned, and refilled.

The reason they do Dogtember is because it raises about 250k for the Lido, which is a charity.

Also, doggies really enjoy it! There are lots of photos of them looking so happy having a nice swim!

If what you say is correct then it all seems fine to me.

I am very sceptical that they ever drain the pool. It’s a lot of water. Most pools are NEVER drained. It’s just to expensive/slow/wasteful. Instead they get a chemical shock and a bit of a breather over winter. Which I do find a little gross, but I would think that they have researched the health and safety aspects and are confident that what they are doing is safe, even if it gives some of us the ick.

Having grown up in the tropics and subtropics with pools and dogs, the main problem is dog hair in the pump.

mitogoshi · 06/08/2024 09:27

It's a special session at the end of the season before they drain and close. Outs does it too though only one day in late October/early November normally

Greenbananasoup · 06/08/2024 09:28

DopeyS · 06/08/2024 09:06

@Greenbananasoup people on Mumsnet are so embarrassing that jump onto a thread frothing at the mouth at how dirty and disgusting something is without bothering to look at half the facts.

All the people on here deciding it's every weekend, children will be swimming with the dogs. The dogs will be covered in worms, parasites and go knows what else.

Posters have clearly said the pool is a charity, they raise money at the end of the year once it is closed to keep it running. The water is drained for the winter, the pool cleaned and refilled and back open for May. But then the people on here wouldn't be able to clutch at their pearls and scream about the disgusting dogs harming their precious children when the likelihood is most people have never heard of this pool and will never go there- but we must shut it down to save the children.

Proving my point

Don’t be so condescending, I read the entire Dogtember webpage and the swim section of the lido webpage before any of my comments.

I think it is disgusting and a health risk to any dog owners swimming with the dogs. I think the lido could raise money in a way that keeps the pools reserved for humans only- as a pp suggested half price tickets for off season swimming. Perhaps swim lessons for school age kids. Or open to kayaking clubs to do lessons in water safety, rolling, and rescue as well. Or lifeguard training classes. So much can be done in the off season other than catering to dogs who already have an entire beach to use.

It’s arrogant to assume those who think it’s awful “can’t read” or are unaware of the details.

So why aren't they doing any of this then?

If you read more of the website, you’ll see that there are loads of other things going on, both in the pool and in the buildings.

The dog swimming is a short special before the pool closure for cleaning, then the winter (human) swimming season begins.

Outside the specified dog dates, all dogs (except assistance dogs) are not permitted anywhere on the site

DominoRules · 06/08/2024 09:30

I went last year with my dog, it was such a lovely atmosphere and fun! Nobody was swimming (as in laps of front crawl) just standing in the water or sitting on the steps in the shallows to keep an eye on their dog so I don’t think any need for germ paranoia.

They raise lots of money and it’s then drained and cleaned afterwards ready for the new human season.

Yes I did see, but the current “loads of other things” obviously is not making enough money so why not add yet more other things instead of having dogs in the pool? You’ve said nothing I don’t know or refutes my points.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 06/08/2024 07:59

Oh I don't know.

Some people are disgusting. I'd rather share with my dogs than with some of my fellow humans.

100% this!!

Sibilantseamstress · 06/08/2024 09:39

Where does it say they “drain” the pool?

Mercurial123 · 06/08/2024 09:40

There hasn't been an anti dog thread for at least a week? I love how wound up people get.

DoIWantTo · 06/08/2024 09:42

I love my dog and he’s allowed in the kids paddling pool with them but like heck would I get into an actual pool full of dogs. For a start mine thinks I’m about to drown every time I get further than knee deep in the water and starts trying to pull me out 😂

Deboragh · 06/08/2024 09:42

CormorantStrikesBack · 06/08/2024 08:04

Kids will wee in the pool more than a dog will 🤷🏻‍♀️

It's a dog and owner sessions, under 16s not allowed.

Enoughwiththisshit · 06/08/2024 09:43

I swim in the Thames (🤢), so a load of dogs in a chlorinated pool is doubtless a lot more hygienic than what I'm used to.

SurferRona · 06/08/2024 09:45

How wonderful! Brilliant idea - if I was close I’d go in a heartbeat! Those dogs and owners must have so much fun! How lucky that those people who don’t like this idea don’t have to go there 😉

Youremylobster86 · 06/08/2024 09:47

I think it's a great idea. The pool will be fully cleaned before it returns to 'normal' use in the next season and it will not affect anyone who does not want to swim with dogs as the lido wouldn't be open for them during that time anyway.

Its after the season has finished. Its a special ticket only event. Its not for the general public.

Why not have dogs in the pool when people who don't like it ARE NOT THERE?

It probably generates a ton of money or they wouldn't be putting on so many sessions.

My assumption is that this is very profitable 100x paying humans plus 50x paying dogs (max, might not reach full capacity) yield more than max 8x pool hire to kayak clubs and lifeguard trainers (who might already have training venues, so the Lido would need to undercut existing provision to attract custom)

Standard practice to drain any kind of pool tbh for deep cleans. Even normal chlorinated ones. But here you are - it gets drained, as does my local Lido at PZ
