Well, I am never going to any lido that allows dogs in.
Disgusting beyond belief.
Their Dogtember also says you can swim with your dog, and they recommend long sleeves so your arms don’t get scratched.
How has health & safety ever approved this?

You do realise no one is forcing anyone to go don't you?

They don’t make money. The volunteer organisation offset the loss from running the pool. The public health aspect is covered because the pool is closed and cleaned before it reopens. The only sessions running are the dog swims. It’s entirely up to dog owners if they want to swim with their dogs or not.

It’s still making money to make money to offset costs. All businesses make money to offset costs! (and if a for profit business hopefully make a profit).

Yes, I am sure in the fine print of buying the human ticket to swim with a dog, it says you release all liability to the pool.

Cobblersorchard · 06/08/2024 08:36

I can’t see the problem, it’s specific sessions at the end of the season after which they clean it.

HazelLion · 06/08/2024 07:53

Meh, it's chlorinated isn't it? You must not realise how disgusting humans are. Dogs are unlikely to go to the toilet in a pool, but we can't say the same for people.

Lidos are sea water.

Really?! And here I was thinking I was going to be bundled into a riot van, handcuffed and tossed in the pool with the dogs.

Stupid question.

Mixing dogs and humans together while sharing pool water is a recipe for disaster

  • mortality rate of 30% for humans- Capnocytophaga canimorsus - normal in dog saliva.
  • parasites like toxocara canis- do you want worms literally wriggling their way through your flesh? To your eyes? Causing permanent blindness? And if pregnant losing your baby?

And again, no one is forcing anyone to go in

Saltdean Lido has been restored by volunteers who formed a community interest group to save it from developers. It’s incredibly expensive to run a heated outdoor pool, and it’s been incredibly difficult to restore the lido building as it’s listed and was in very poor shape when they took it on.

The dog weekends are hugely popular and make money to help subsidise the rest of the season. As PPs have said, they run them at the end of the season when the pool would otherwise be closed, and the pool is cleaned before reopening to humans.

@Hobbes8

Don't be letting the truth get in the way of frothing!!

It's not all about you. Businesses allow dogs in because they make more money. Go where you like, avoid where you don't like, no one is going to care.

Yes but would the businesses be so quick to allow them if the people who didn't like them being there actually made a fuss about it. I agree with @completeworks , so sick of dogs everywhere

SuePreemly · 06/08/2024 08:38

Not all lidos are sea water, unless they're pumping it a long way to Chipping Norton etc

These sessions are basically the last few before the pool is closed, cleaned and put to bed for the winter.

It's all clean before it's human only swims next year.

Besides which my dog gets out the water to pee, as do all dogs but I am pretty sure all the humans don't!

It not a profitable business. It’s a community interest company run by volunteers.

This thread is weird. I use the lido several times a week and don’t fancy swimming with dogs, so I don’t go to the dog swims. They’re not hard to avoid. It’s not like you can accidentally turn up and there’s hordes of dogs there.

They let dogs into the lido with people on weekends 🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢

https://www.saltdeanlido.co.uk/dogtember

Wait. I know this place, and this is not accurate. Dogs are NOT allowed in the Lido, except in a short break between swim seasons when it's closed to the public.

The Lido summer swim season runs until September 12, and is then closed to the public. The dogs can then swim in the Lido at weekends from September 12-October 6. Owners can get into the pool with the dogs. But the general public are not allowed; you have to be a dog owner and buy a special ticket in advance.

After Dogtember finishes, the pool is drained, cleaned, and refilled.

The reason they do Dogtember is because it raises about 250k for the Lido, which is a charity.

Also, doggies really enjoy it! There are lots of photos of them looking so happy having a nice swim!

UrbanFan · 06/08/2024 08:32

They must have health and safety assessed it and it likely coincides with some treatment of the pool. I'm sure the doggies love it and you don't have to go. Use one of our sewerage filled beaches or rivers instead.

Yes, I am sure the same government suits that approved sewage filled rivers, lakes and beaches also rubber stamped this explosive brain fart of an idea.

This is hilarious. It’s an end of season swim for dogs!

It doesn't. I find it amusing how wound up people get. Just wondering the reason why

pictoosh · 06/08/2024 08:41

I know someone that goes to this event with her dogs. It's an end of season thing before the big clean out.

What are you moaning about?

'There are people having some harmless fun that I personally don't approve of!"

Just...don't go. Meanwhile other people can enjoy themselves. See how that works?

You're not allowed into the pool at a dog swim unless you have a dog, anyway. Those weekends, post-season, aren't for humans to swim, they're for people to look after their dogs in the water. So you couldn't go just because you fancy swimming with dogs.

Exactly

Nothing mumsnet loves more than a good froth about dogs

Mumandcarer80 · 06/08/2024 08:42

Not just the weeing in the pool but what if they 💩💩💩 in it? At least children not toilet trained have a swimming nappy on.

I would have expected a separate pool for dogs. A better idea would be a separate area where staff look after them. They can make doggy friends while the owners go for a swim (without them).

ElephantilonZed · 06/08/2024 08:42

Rank.

EverywhereYouGo · 06/08/2024 08:43

As much as I feel sorry for people who go about their life being scared of germs, they do sound funny when they bring their ridiculousness to these threads. I feel sorry for their children because I bet they're not allowed to play in dirt in case of going blind from dog poo or something they read happening extremely rarely. Poor kids.

Misthios · 06/08/2024 08:44

Why are people focusing on the wee? It's the muck and all the other stuff they have on them, and the hair floating around - it's just disgusting on so many levels.

Again, they do this at the end of the season and they drain and clean the pool afterwards. Human dog owners can swim with their dog if they choose to, no other humans are allowed into the pool during the dog swims or afterwards until it's been thoroughly cleaned.

The sea is a hell of a lot bigger than a 40m heated lido packed with 50 dogs.

Have I mentioned that heated water means high bacteria counts? And that chlorine doesn’t kill everything?

It really does kill everything . One mouthful of seawater can have you in bed or on a toilet for days crusty eye infections and all sorts it is such a risk there is more chance of flesh burrowing of your worms in the sea than a chlorinated swimming pool. If someone is paying money to let their dog swim they are going to have their dogs vaccinated and wormed.
