Mixing dogs and humans together while sharing pool water is a recipe for disaster

  • mortality rate of 30% for humans- Capnocytophaga canimorsus - normal in dog saliva.
  • parasites like toxocara canis- do you want worms literally wriggling their way through your flesh? To your eyes? Causing permanent blindness? And if pregnant losing your baby?

Oh stop it ! Worms peniteating your flesh! What is wrong with you ? .

It's closed to humans for dogtember. From reading the website it's obvious it's just like a nice one off month, they'll clean the pool and re open to humans. I couldn't get her up about it. I think it's nice.

How? The website says clearly that the humans can swim with the dogs if over 16 with a “human swim ticket” and if the human just wants the dog to swim and they throw a ball they can get a “human spectator ticket”

Oh right that’s different then isn’t it.

Yeah this I am unbothered by, we aren’t sharing the same water.

ticktickticktickBOOM · 06/08/2024 08:24

Oh great.

I was thinking of going there this Autumn with all the kids when the sea is too rough.

Won't be now unless I see some advertising on their website about how thoroughly they clean it.

I hope they don't let people swim in the same water without letting them know.

Hunglikeapolevaulter · 06/08/2024 08:25

This is done after the swimming season and the pool is cleaned and drained for winter afterwards so it's a non issue.

How can anyone who is a mum not be aware of toxocara parasites?! They are in cat and dog poo. If you can’t scoop cat poo whilst pregnant, then why would you think it is safe to swim in the same water as dog poo washed off 50 dog bums?!

Toxocara canis is a parasite that can cause blindness in humans and infection also comes from close contact with infected dog poo. The horrific sounding visceral larva migrans is a rare complication of Toxocara infection, when the larval parasites migrate haphazardly through the body tissues, leaving a trail of damaged tissue in their wake.”

Saltdean Lido has been restored by volunteers who formed a community interest group to save it from developers. It’s incredibly expensive to run a heated outdoor pool, and it’s been incredibly difficult to restore the lido building as it’s listed and was in very poor shape when they took it on.

The dog weekends are hugely popular and make money to help subsidise the rest of the season. As PPs have said, they run them at the end of the season when the pool would otherwise be closed, and the pool is cleaned before reopening to humans.

It’s not anxiety to post factual information on real health risks.

There you have it, making money is more important than safety or public health.
The over 16 to swim with the dogs is probably more about the bad press they’d get when a child falls seriously ill.

How are so many so sure that dogs won't wee in the pool? It's not like you can ask them...

This is gross

Good luck asking my toddler not to pee in the pool too 😁. Unfortunately swim nappies only catch solids!

Surely you shower after the pool because of all the human sweat, skin, and poo particles anyway?

They do this at the end of the season specifically so that they can drain and clean the pool afterwards.

They don't normally open at all in the autumn/winter but if they do reopen to humans they will have cleaned the pool. Don't let a few idiots on mumsnet who've made assumptions without checking their facts put you off swimming in a clean, safe and beautiful pool.

The sea is a hell of a lot bigger than a 40m heated lido packed with 50 dogs.

Have I mentioned that heated water means high bacteria counts? And that chlorine doesn’t kill everything?

Have you seen a tree grow in the pool?

That’s why.

UrbanFan · 06/08/2024 08:32

They must have health and safety assessed it and it likely coincides with some treatment of the pool. I'm sure the doggies love it and you don't have to go. Use one of our sewerage filled beaches or rivers instead.

They don’t make money. The volunteer organisation offset the loss from running the pool. The public health aspect is covered because the pool is closed and cleaned before it reopens. The only sessions running are the dog swims. It’s entirely up to dog owners if they want to swim with their dogs or not.

Humans shower before and after the pool - no mention of hosing down the dogs first in this advert.

It happens at end of year, pre-annual clean down only folks!

You’re swimming in water which has literally cleaned the arsehole of every single person that’s used it, a few dogs aren’t going to make much difference.

Speak for yourself but when I get in a pool my arsehole is already clean. What do you think people are doing before they get in a pool, wiping shit everywhere? Most people are hygenic and care about water safety. Dogs do not.

RheaRend · 06/08/2024 08:35

They do it at the end of the season! It is not done every week in the middle of the season.

MelainesLaugh · 06/08/2024 08:35
