Phrases you hate

Mine is ‘buttery soft’…If you haven’t come across this phrase, it is mainly used when describing leggings or other clothes, but now I’ve even seen it being used to describe gold jewellery! Also butter isn't that soft…Margariney soft doesn’t have the same ring to it I suppose.. Anyone else?

"Methinks" is an immediate fuck right off from me. It just conjures up the smuggest of self-satisfied wankistry, probably from a man all dressed up to go Morris dancing complete with bells on a stick. A worryingly specific reaction I know 😂

Pussywilloww · 05/08/2024 22:07

I did a thing!

Hate it.

Pack lunch instead of packed
Mash potato instead of mashed
Today I saw “ corn beef”

Oh dear, I've spent my entire life calling it corn beef, learn something new every day.

“I was today years old when I realised…” - this really irritates me. It makes no sense whatsoever.

Ones I’ve thankfully only seen on MN are:
boils my piss
Lost my shit

Boils my piss is vile…I can’t believe intelligent women use it.

JollyJolene · 05/08/2024 22:08

Dropped the ball
myself/yourself/himself/herself 😡
cheeky wine/week off

Thevelvelletes · 05/08/2024 22:12

Light and airy.
So moreish.

RabbitsRock · 05/08/2024 22:13

Thighdentitycrisis “can I get” annoys me too - Americanism

Girasole02 · 05/08/2024 22:13

Lean in

HTH. So passive aggressive.

Before I found the section on Mumsnet which explained abbreviations, I thought this meant 'hit the hay': kind of a 'go to your room' phrase, encouraging the person to get off the thread.....
Never made sense mind!

"Pooped"

and

"Passed"

Words not phrases but both american adopted words to sanitise pooed or died/passed away.

"He passed" what? A kidney stone?? A large stool???

And "pooped" used by grown adults to make the process sound cuter or less crude.

Passed was English. It is written in old text dating two hundred years before Columbus. If someone isn't ready to say died and wants to use passed, then I wouldn't judge.
Poop comes from English/Latin and was used at least three hundred years before Columbus.

The US spawned very little language. It would have been English, Dutch, Russian, Germanic etc.
Very now, mine is British Values.

longdistanceclaraclara · 05/08/2024 22:14

A 'touch' of asd.

Anything 'nice'

Chilly - in relation to weather not food.

RabbitsRock · 05/08/2024 22:15

MorningHood “ At the minute” in what context? I can’t see how that’s irritating.

ajanifear · 05/08/2024 22:16

someone saying somewhere is ‘their happy place’. I don’t know why it winds me up as much as it does!

LGBirmingham · 05/08/2024 22:17

Also 'ect' when meaning 'etc'

Stickytoffeepudding6 · 05/08/2024 22:20

Oh my days

Oh my gosh

FlamingWheelieBinofDespair · 05/08/2024 22:21

Making memories

Love language

Ihaveaquestionn · 05/08/2024 22:21

News headlines that read along the lines of famous actress “breaks her silence” on divorce rumours… Can’t explain properly why it annoys me but it feels like the papers are insinuating they are purposefully not speaking about something personal when it’s actually nobody’s business anyway. Just say they made a comment!

CompleteOvaryAction · 05/08/2024 22:22

"So proud of the young man/woman you are becoming" [as opposed to being proud of who they are now?] - always on Facebook posts on offsprings' 14th, 15th, 16th, 17th, & 18th birthdays. Too twee.
See also: "love you to the moon and back". Vom.

Stickytoffeepudding6 · 05/08/2024 22:22

Doingtheboxerbeat · 05/08/2024 21:35

So sorry to Americans but poop and panties sound so horrendously childish to me and obvious twatty corporate speak .

Makes me want to vomit

familyissues12345 · 05/08/2024 22:22

Needs gone - usually found on Facebook marketplace

sammylady37 · 05/08/2024 22:22

Ooh I’ve remembered another one: on my period or I’m on/due on. Why don’t people just say “I have my period”?. Saying ‘on’ doesn’t make sense in this context.

Fedupmeds · 05/08/2024 22:23

Hate the expression,s
Think out side the box
I have a bone to pick with you
A I dont live in a box B I'm not a f...g dog

Zoommeout · 05/08/2024 22:23

pintsizeprincess · 05/08/2024 21:46

When someone says " do you understand where I'm coming from? Or "am I making sense? " when they've just described something so simple that a toddler would understand. A colleauge does it all the time, drives me nuts!

I’ve been saying does that make sense ALOT recently and it’s because my brain has stopped working ! I thought it was early onset Alzheimer’s, but now thinking menopause? It’s because when I speak I struggle to make sense of it - it’s horrible . I don’t recognise myself anymore

Sentences beginning with ‘So’. I’m not gonna lie & to be fair when there’s no suggestion that there would be a reason to lie, or any question of fairness.
