Mine is ‘buttery soft’…If you haven’t come across this phrase, it is mainly used when describing leggings or other clothes, but now I’ve even seen it being used to describe gold jewellery! Also butter isn't that soft…Margariney soft doesn’t have the same ring to it I suppose.. Anyone else?

I also hate lush

I hate when Americans use "stinking" as a good word as in "That baby is just so stinking cute". Any form of stink makes me think of a bad smell.

Reminds me of when “sick” meant good/nice.

”Those trainers look sick”

KimberleyClark · 11/09/2024 11:33

I'm not keen on the use of the word cute to describe an attractive grown adult either.

If you say any of these, I hat you

Thanks - can I have a Stetson?

A cheeky deerstalker for you, Sherlock.

CompleteOvaryAction · 11/09/2024 18:12

"Dirty burger."
(No thanks, I'll have one that's cooked hygienically.)
I hate the implication that anything that's a treat is "dirty" or "naughty" - I just want to enjoy things - no need for a layer of shame!

Anonym00se · 11/09/2024 22:03

DDog. It’s not an abbreviation. It’s quicker to just say dog.

I just can't eat anything that has that in the description it makes me feel sick.

RaraRachael · 11/09/2024 22:37

Next level anything

Mac n cheese - another Americanisation

"cheeky" is just as bad

TheAverageJoanne · 12/09/2024 18:09

Written slang like mi, ya, and worse, n instead of and.

pictoosh · 12/09/2024 18:30

Cheeky Nandos. Nah. Unless it's referring to the robbing bastards taking not insubstantial money for completely dreadful food.

TheAverageJoanne · 13/09/2024 09:28

"X weeks/months/years of you" - posted on Facebook usually accompanied by a baby or child photo.

Every love story is special but ours is my favourite.

turbonerd · 13/09/2024 16:35

Funkyslippers · 10/09/2024 22:07

Is that what they mean in the song Something's Gotten Hold Of My Heart?

I love the Nick Cave version of that song.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 13/09/2024 16:37

Not a phrase, but ‘peeps’ when they mean ‘people’.

And ‘baby steps’ - so twee.

Bastide · 13/09/2024 16:39

And ‘loaded’, as in ‘loaded fries’. It invariably makes me think of a full nappy bulging out of a babygro.

Mac n cheese - another Americanisation

Yes, I loathe that one. Related is "Grill Cheese," meaning "Grilled Cheese Sandwich," which I saw in London, a couple of years ago. The price was 8,5 - no Pound sign. I was tempted to go in and ask for one and offer to pay in Kazakh Tenge.

60sbird · 15/09/2024 13:27

Just watching a video about a car I’m planning on getting and the guy keeps calling things Puppies I.e “you can pop these puppies out” it’s making me cringe

60sbird · 15/09/2024 15:46

Just thought of another one (sorry haven’t read whole thread so not sure if it’s already on here) Smashed it, Smashed her back doors in, such a vile saying and degrading

GreenMindExplorer · 15/09/2024 17:55

"Think outside the box" and "let's touch base". My ex-boss used to say them all the time!

TheAverageJoanne · 15/09/2024 23:45

Someone mentioned "going gym" which I think is as stupid as "needs gone" I saw this just now

As s non-native speaker of English, I'm flabbergasted by the phrases I've seen here. It's interesting how we see the language differently, and I'm glad to have this opportunity. "Reach out", for example, is one that I find rather nice, boy was I shocked to see how many vetoes it got hehe. If I could contribute to the list, I'd like to say I don't really like the sound of "obsessed", which is very frequent among influencers. It is just me?

"Reach out" is just wanky. It sounds like you're begging, when all anyone ever means is that they talked to someone or contacted them. It seems to be becoming a bit of an epidemic on MN.

sharpclawedkitten · 16/09/2024 17:51

"Reach out" is an epidemic everywhere at the moment.

One from me - "stack it" to fall over. Where on earth did that one come from? It's so counter-intuitive. You stack things up, not down Grin

Yeah, I see people using "reach out" more and more. Not only here on MN, TBH. The other day I was watching Selling Sunset on Netflix, and one of the agents used it, I instantly remembered this thread hahaha! I hadn't really thought about the begging idea, though. Very interesting.

SinnerBoy · 17/09/2024 16:48

Stacked it is motorbike racing parlance for a pile up. You can see bikes end up on top of each other.

InSearchOfMartin · 23/09/2024 00:47

Got with - as in "I got with Steve in 2023"
Had X kids "to" someone (as opposed to with)

It sounds so chav.
