Where is Keir Starmer?

Does anyone else find it weird Keir Starmer isn't more visible this week? He hasn't held a press conference in days, wasn't obviously present at No. 10 after the Cobra meeting and won't recall parliament. Surely he can't have actually gone on his holiday when the UK is in meltdown?

Looks like he is getting on with his job.

Why is this anything other than a matter for the police? Riots are a public order problem.

They sort the tactics and the policing. Who wants a PM that directs the police? He’s done just what he should, provided extra resources and got his colleagues to make provision in the justice system. End.

Maybe cos its a massive cultural issue. Whatever he says will only piss people off though, so he's best keeping quiet.

I listened to a small 5 min video on youtube him saying about standing army and he looked and sounded like robot: there but not there, no emotion, no power, no nothing, few words

He is always like that.

Firewalking · 06/08/2024 15:36

He's probably busy taking the knee somewhere.

newnamethanks · 06/08/2024 15:36

Elon Musk should stick to hanging out with wives of famous men and advising D Trump. Bugger off and count some billions Elon.

JacquesHarlow · 06/08/2024 15:37

Friends,

Why is anyone taking the time to write proper commentary on this?

The OP hasn't bothered to Google any news before posting, neither did they watch any of his statement today.

This is the very definition of 'fake news', designed to get people frothed up about someone who is working very hard to mitigate against these riots, and who has unmatched experience of how to handle these situations.

It is disappointing that posters like @DirtyCarrots can come on here, post misinformation, then disappear and never post again in the thread, leaving everyone else to carry on the misinformation

However it is very 2020s in terms of the 'post facts era.

People don't want facts anymore, they just want to hate people that don't represent their values. Hence why we are in this riotous mess at the moment.

bombastix · 06/08/2024 15:37

Yes because at this time, we want a very strong, charismatic leader who can speak to the nation and calm the rioters by speaking their language…

And let us not stigmatise these patriots because if they felt recognized, and Starmer had the words, it could stop today

Give it a rest. I bet you were so happy when you saw this thread @Firewalking so you could have a pop at him.

And, of course, KS should immediately don a showgirls outfit and high kick through an audition for Britain's Got Talent. Like a proper PM VividQuoter?

Iwant20cats · 06/08/2024 15:45

He's fiddling while Rome burns

@stronglatte

yes at No 10, probably for an hour or so, something about a little unrest in the Middle East I understand.

You do realise that he has a whole Cabinet of Secretarys of State responsible for government functions.

can you tell me precisicely what you are expecting him to do - ie specific tasks for him to do. Everyone will have left COBRA with a big to do list, its the PMs job to manage that.

Keep British citizens safe - that's what I am expecting him to do. And prioritise that .

You are aware Kier Starmer doesn't actually run the country? It's run by civil servants. He's just a face for the machine. It's all done by faceless people behind the scenes you won't even know the names of.

Of course we run the country!

There is no appeasing racist thugs and speaking their language.
Which anyone trying to set alight a hotel with people in or yank non white people out of their car are.
I don't want him to pander to them, I feel safer knowing that he's quietly getting on with the job of hopefully getting the fuckers locked up instead.

Ted27 · 06/08/2024 16:15

@stronglatte

an all out war in the Middle East will be a disaster for us all

As shocking as it is, the situation here is nothing like Gaza, which really is going up in flames.
And again - what specific activity are you expecting from him
Arrests are being made, courts are sitting, the immediate issues are being handled.
The deep rooted causes will take much longer to address. No quick fixes.

Which he is doing by creating extra court time to get racist rioting thugs off the streets. Is that nig what you want?

As an aside, should terrified children of asylum seekers not be kept safe?

It was a satire - tbc, I just took some of the utter drivel I have read on here in the last week and wrote up their wish list.

stronglatte · 06/08/2024 16:49

Totally want him to make sure children of asylum seekers are safe! Goodness, what a question. The mob marauding across our towns managing. This is not the time to be hosting dignitaries . Also not sure why I'm being tagged about all out war in the Middle East as I never mentioned anything to do with that ! I just want our leader to lead ! There's families too scared to leave their homes, injured victims fighting for their lives and an overstretched and overwhelmed police force. He needs to focus on them all not host

What exactly do you think he should be doing? What do you want him personally to dedicate 24 hours a day to?

Do you expect him to ride through these protests on horseback leading the police or something?

He's probably sitting somewhere thinking why he took this job on. He should probably capitalise on the Deputy PM's experience here, she is probably much more skilled to deal with these mobs.

What do you mean?

Wonder how many people who voted him in are pissed at his handling (or not) of these riots.

I’m not. I’m entirely happy with how it’s being handled. I’ll be happier still the more rioters there are in custody.

Whammyammy · 06/08/2024 17:36

At least KS will go down in the history books for something. Riots all over the Country within weeks of him being at the helm.

We knew it wouldn't be good, buy never this bad.
Anyone got Liz Truss's number?
