Where is Keir Starmer?

Does anyone else find it weird Keir Starmer isn't more visible this week? He hasn't held a press conference in days, wasn't obviously present at No. 10 after the Cobra meeting and won't recall parliament. Surely he can't have actually gone on his holiday when the UK is in meltdown?

The Home Secretary has been all over the media today.

Ted27 · 05/08/2024 21:06

Perhaps he should follow Royal protocol and have the flag flown over No 10 when he is in residence

Or maybe sit with Larry on the window sill so we know he's there

completeworks · 05/08/2024 21:07

The lack of police in Birmingham right now won't be helping his 'twotierkeir' image

Cadela · 05/08/2024 21:07

He chaired a COBRA meeting at 8am this morning. Parliament isn’t even in session at the minute.

Stop with all this Keir’s fault bullshit. This is because of the Tories. He’s picking up the pieces after their horrific building up of the right wing for 14 years.

ilovesooty · 05/08/2024 21:07

I think he's been doing his job perfectly efficiently. I accept that he isn't to everyone's taste but these constant suggestions that he isn't getting on with what he has to do are getting rather tiresome AFAIC.

Well said

I think he does need to reappear, he could calm this all down by equally commenting on non white riots. He hasn't and has fed into the narrative of some demographics being treated differently to others.

Just to stop calls of racist which are banded around everywhere - I'm mixed race, feeling very unsettled and eager to see this settled in a fair and demographic way rather than pretending there are no valid points of concern being raised in the UK.

He’s commented on the situation that is happening now … he’s not making a documentary on the potted history of Civil Unrest in England

JoJothegerbil · 05/08/2024 21:08

What exactly do you want him to do? He's made two statements, visited Southport (twice) and chaired a COBRA meeting today.

Frenchsplit · 05/08/2024 21:08

He’s been visible but calm. Dramatic statements or recall of parliament just gives oxygen to these halfwits

FrivolousKitchenRollUse · 05/08/2024 21:09

Presume he was at the COBRA meeting? Would rather he was working than in front of a microphone, although as others have said he has spoken on this already.

Starmer not going on holiday this week amid riots, Downing Street insists

The Prime Minister will lead the Government’s response to a wave of far-Right violence and disorder across the country

Reappear from where? You do realise just because you haven’t been paying attention doesn’t mean nothing has been happening?
Do you really think the people starting all these riots would immediately stop burning down buildings if KS said lots of types of people are thugs?
It’s not really outlandish or out of character for KS to condemn all violence.

DirtyCarrots · 05/08/2024 21:11

Well yes, I do think we need strong leadership as a country at the moment and having a visible and present PM is important (even if the civil service are responsible for actually delivering stuff). I expect more than a pre-recorded statement yesterday and a press release today. Maybe I am expecting too much?

Why don't people Google before posting? Honestly, it just makes you look a bit thick.

So what are you actually on about, OP?

Yes.
Much rather this than hysterics or not being visible at all.
He completely is visible. He's doing his job.
Rather a "the grown ups are handling this" stance than as you say pander to halfwits and /or more drama.

Were you expecting him to FaceTime you personally?

Don't be so bloody ridiculous.
If "closing down free speech" means getting tough with rioting racists,GOOD.

What would you like him to do ?

Call round your house ?
A personal phone call ?
Send you a cake, iced with his plans ?

Why though? All these demonstrations/ conflicts involve relatively small numbers.
What do you actually want KS to do by “being more visible”?
Some sort of daily statement would be totally out of proportion for what is happening right now imo.

These events are not "free speech", they are violent thugs. Most news reports have a picture of a car on fire in Middlesbrough. This was a totally targeted attack in a targeted area. Do not try and make this about free speech, it is a racist attack.
