Where is Keir Starmer?

Does anyone else find it weird Keir Starmer isn't more visible this week? He hasn't held a press conference in days, wasn't obviously present at No. 10 after the Cobra meeting and won't recall parliament. Surely he can't have actually gone on his holiday when the UK is in meltdown?

I’m not. I’m entirely happy with how it’s being handled. I’ll be happier still the more rioters there are in custody.

I'm not either, and I think it's proceeding as it should with prompt court hearings for those already apprehended.

I'd have been happier without fourteen years of Tory cuts and Brexit, plus the likes of Farage and his privileged mates who are still shitstirring for all they're worth even in the face of people being seriously injured and killed, but you can't have everything.

At least KS will go down in the history books for something. Riots all over the Country within weeks of him being at the helm

What, like David Cameron and the 2011 riots you mean?

bombastix · 06/08/2024 17:43

Be grateful we don’t have any of the previous wallies in charge. This for the police. I don’t actually want the PM to be making an announcement every two minutes or some other performance a la Nicola Sturgeon or Boris Johnson. They were self regarding and patronising to everyone when they did it.

Goodbye fatuous politics like

stop the riots

or

stay put, stay safe

or

stop a racist, shop a racist

Agreed, very similar. Although it took DC a year of being PM before the country rioted.

KS: Hold my beer 🤣

Well Cameron didn't inherit the same catalogue of right wing political gibberish and austerity hadn't screwed the police, prison services or justice system. We also had a functioning NHS in those days.

Exactly. There was nothing much to provoke riots 13 years ago. It didn’t stop them though.

I LIKE multiculturalism. I live in an extremely diverse, medium sized town and it's absolutely stuffed with interesting options for food, clothing, activities, and yes, interesting people. To me that's a true British value - we pinch a lot of other cultures and languages and shuffle it into the pack. We have been suffering a bit lately from reduced police numbers and even more from local government funding squeezes, but we all pull together and hope to get through it. What we don't need is a bunch of rowdy oiks doing a Millwall vs West Ham impression through the main street and taking some of our more impressive buildings down along with a selection of shops. At least the usual shoplifters leave the shop standing.

itsgettingweird · 06/08/2024 18:32

Chairing his second cobra meeting in 2 days.

Were you expecting him round for tea and cake?

Sorry he's busy trying to stop rioting thugs destroying our cities.

Fluufer · 06/08/2024 16:52

What exactly do you think he should be doing? What do you want him personally to dedicate 24 hours a day to?

It's a national emergency so yes he should

He should what? Ride in on a white horse? Address the nation every 5 minutes? Nah, he's letting the experts get on with experting, he's consulting with the people who know what's going on, he's facilitating court time and prison places. That'll do me.

itsgettingweird · 06/08/2024 19:01

He's also eating and sleeping. You know - so he's fit and well enough to lead the country.

I'd prefer that to the "working day and night" we got through Clovis which in truth translated to "having a party"

I heard he also went to the toilet, the bloody slacker.

Soon be Friday and family dinner night. Go stage a protest outside No 10 OP and you can tell him what you think of him. I'm sure he'll make you as welcome as you would expect.

dottiehens · 08/08/2024 09:12

I feel sorry for Labour people they spend 14 years of their life on the case with the Tories. Now when they hear the same complaints about KS they need to put in their time supporting and justifying him. Basically. It must be exhausting for them.
If only Boris would have been given space for his family and even when he was ill with Covid. It was relentless.

Framilode · 08/08/2024 09:22

which family Dottiehens? He seemed to have several.

bombastix · 08/08/2024 09:36

BrigadierEtienneGerard · 08/08/2024 09:36

Why on earth should Parliament be recalled just because the great unwashed and brain dead are making twats of themselves on the streets?

bombastix · 08/08/2024 09:38

It’s a police matter. End. Not for a bunch of politicians to involve themselves in managing public order. They wouldn’t do a better job

Andthereitis · 08/08/2024 09:46

saraclara · 05/08/2024 20:47

Why recall parliament? There's no need. There are no new laws that need passing to deal with this, nothing for MPs to do in the chamber. It'd be pointless.

Where is he? Presumably busy meeting with police and trying to keep on top of this. etc. He's not a showman.

I've never really understood why they get such long holidays.

saraclara · 08/08/2024 09:52

Andthereitis · 08/08/2024 09:46

I've never really understood why they get such long holidays.

They don't.

During recesses from the parliamentary session, neither the Commons nor the Lords meet to conduct business. Essentially it’s a period when MPs don’t go into Parliament to debate and vote, but they’re still expected to deal with issues in their constituency the media often likes to refer to recess as a holiday, but in reality, it’s an opportunity for MPs to dedicate time to their constituency.
