Feminists against sex segregation in sports

1000 replies

Tandora · 03/08/2024 21:22

AIBU to share a different perspective on a subject that seems to be almost entirely taken for granted on mumsnet? This is not something I have a definite opinion on myself (although I am against sex testing and I fully support the rights of trans women and women with differences in sex development to compete alongside other women in sporting competitions at all levels).

However I have found it really upsetting the degrading way that people have been speaking recently about top/ elite female athletes; denigrating their sporting prowess, and portraying them as weak, feeble and helpless, particularly in the wake of this boxing match controversy.

I started looking into opinions on the issue, starting with a search on “feminists against sex segregation in sport”. I came across this really interesting article.

AIBU to share?

It's the logic my father used for hitting women. "They wanted equality."

I don't think even he ever expected it to become an Olympic sport, though.

It's not funny but I did laugh.
No offense intended.

No I’m just not allowed to use that word apparently

Which word? Sex fascist?

If so you can quote this post and give your definition in the reply so we know that the definition you are giving is in reply to the question "What is a sex fascist?"

I don't think anyone is reporting you today, I think we'd all like to hear you say in unambivalent terms exactly what you mean.

None of us can make him look worse than he can.

Like mumsnet? Yeh I’ve been meaning to take a break, it’s toxic recently.

Anyone actually read the article?

I skimmed it - it’s NOT an article. It’s an academic paper by a legal academic/professional with no scientific or clinical expertise on the subject of the biological or physiological differences between men and women (the old fashioned, biologically and chromosomally defied variety) and its impact upon competitive and elit sport. Therefore it was assigned to the virtual bin.

I’d recommend reading actual peer reviewed research on the matter.

HTH.

Shennie100 · 04/08/2024 00:44

And he's used that. I thought he might mean terf?

Alucard55 · 04/08/2024 00:45

@Tandora

Genuine question. If you are arguing that we should remove sex segregation in sport are you also arguing that we should do away with sex segregation in prisons, refuges etc?

NonPlayerCharacter · 04/08/2024 00:37

Your beliefs involve using a word so abusive that MNHQ won't let it stand?

And you still don't see the problem?

I don’t think it’s abusive no. It’s a characterisation of a particular ideology, that tolerates no dissent or opposition, that seeks to disappear TQI people from public life, strip them of their humanity/ dignity , access to healthcare and legal and social rights.
Ultimately the aim is to make these groups disappear, because of their belief in binary biological sex as an unambiguous and infallible fact/ truth.

Can you elaborate please?

What access to health care are they stripped of?
What legal and social rights are they stripped of?

@Tandora just to be clear, you believe that some (all?) of the women posting here on this thread hold the views you've just listed about wanting TQI people disappeared from public life, and the rest?

Do you have any evidence such as articles or statements from Gender Critical Feminists saying that they want to stop Trans people from accessing healthcare or that they want to strip them off social rights? I'd be interested to see it.

GailBlancheViola · 04/08/2024 00:54

because of their belief in binary biological sex as an unambiguous and infallible fact/ truth.

Well, it is a infallible fact/truth, there are only two sexes. Plus the belief in that fact is protected and WORIADS.

people from public life, strip them of their humanity/ dignity , access to healthcare and legal and social rights.

No, that is what TRAs and MRAs are trying to do to women.

NotTerfNorCis · 04/08/2024 00:55

Just popped my head into the conversation and assumed you were talking about trans activism there.

Can you elaborate please?

What access to health care are they stripped of?
What legal and social rights are they stripped of?

puberty blockers, cross sex hormones. Imposition of mandatory psychotherapy and other unwanted “therapies” (basically conversion practices), the right to have their gender legally recognised, the right to protection from discrimination and violence , the right to privacy, now for kids to have their pronouns and names respected in school, the right to participate in sports without discrimination.. I could go on..

Yes. Some not all.

oh I see. Anyone who supports the Cass Review is a sex fascist

got it.

Yes I changed this because I realised as a post, it was going nowhere.

But on the other hand, it must be horrific to live with a labour government that is sex fascist. Must be really really hard.

So yeah you are calling us fascists then.

I'm still waiting for your yes or no answers to my very easy to fill out mini questionnaire, I even separated them out in nice clean bullet points for your ease of use.

I'd love for you to go through it point by point just to be absolutely clear I'm picking up exactly what you are putting down because so far (across 4 threads now!) you have studiously avoided doing so....

Car racing - male advantage yes, stronger neck muscles mean they are better able to withstand g force and therefore corner faster.

Snooker - male advantage yes, greater reach.

Synchronization swimming - male advantage hmmm not that familiar with SS I think that it prioritises graceful movement etc so no male advantage there, however, if men were to do it they would be able to stay underwater longer (greater lung capacity) and perform more power driven moves so it would probably develop into a parallel but different form much like gymnastics.
