Feminists against sex segregation in sports

Tandora · 03/08/2024 21:22

AIBU to share a different perspective on a subject that seems to be almost entirely taken for granted on mumsnet? This is not something I have a definite opinion on myself (although I am against sex testing and I fully support the rights of trans women and women with differences in sex development to compete alongside other women in sporting competitions at all levels).

However I have found it really upsetting the degrading way that people have been speaking recently about top/ elite female athletes; denigrating their sporting prowess, and portraying them as weak, feeble and helpless, particularly in the wake of this boxing match controversy.

I started looking into opinions on the issue, starting with a search on “feminists against sex segregation in sport”. I came across this really interesting article.

AIBU to share?

Basic translation:

Women shouldn't be allowed anything for themselves.

Men should be allowed to barge in and take over everything. Men should be allowed to do whatever they like with impunity, no matter the harm to women, and we aren't allowed to complain about it because otherwise that makes us bigoted sex fascists!

See I thought that but as it was such clever language I thought I must be wrong.

Thank you😊

well that’s a huge one, and hard to sum it up succinctly (also not the topic).last time I tried I was accused of a word salad and it’s last.

In brief, off the top of my head. Feminism - the belief that women are equal to men, that women have historically been disadvantaged/
oppressed / confered inferior status because of misogyny/ patriarchy. That these systems of oppression are structural and deeply entrenched in all aspects of society, and that they need to be challenged and overcome, so that women can enjoy full and free personhood on an equal basis with men.

Thank you.

My husband however knows a great deal about professional sports.
In the last 25 years he has strength trained countless male and female olympic and world champions across a range of sports. Oh and as well as being a coach he does have degrees in biochemistry and physiology with a history of research in both fields.

He speaks in awe of the strength, power and grit of many of his female athletes.

But they have the strength and power of women. Elite , fantastic and powerful women certainly , but women non the less.

Not once in a long career has one of his female athletes attained the same power levels as a male athlete in the gym (and god knows he pushes them and they respond) or comparable results in the pursuit of their actual discipline. Not once.

This is not denigrating to women athletes. It is simply a matter of biological fact and any expert ( not a pretendy PhD one) will tell you that.

any expert ( not a pretendy PhD one

Oh and do remind us how do you define woman/women again?

FFS stop the stupid quote and highlight business. It's derailing your own thread.

There isn't really a point to the thread though is there. Discuss if male and females should be segregated in sport or if there is a better option. Obviously yes and no there isn't.
Think OPs next thread should get tumble weed.

Actually we barely have women’s football because of sex segregation in sport. I know it’s changing more recently but I never had the opportunity to play football as a kid, it wasn’t considered a female sport.

What a good job we do have segregated women's football, then, or we'd still be there now watching the menz do it all for us

And women would have the opportunity to play football now if it wasnt sex segregated . .......because they wouldn't make the fucking team.

I’m engaging with the people who are participqting in the topic!

im copy-pasting the very numerous posts that are just nasty, gratuitous personal attacks for reasons expalined above. I think it’s really important to draw attention to the sheer volume of these and their character.

But you are also repeating those that are not personal attacks, but you just disagree with. As I said- if you don't screenshot the whole thing- then your deceit speaks volumes about you.

I knew you'd be getting quoted in bold. I hope you're feeling contrite 😁

Smug, more like! 😏 I've made the grade as a Disapproved Woman again! That's in good company.

RobinStrike · 04/08/2024 00:32

The thread is pointless. No engagement whatever, despite OP insisting she wants to.

Davros · 04/08/2024 00:32

With all the classification rules in the Paralympics, they still separate the sexes

How can I define it when I’m not allowed to say it?

Try... go on, I dare you to have a go within the posting rules, you can do it! I believe in you!

Or if you really can't how about giving answers to the bullet points one by one, I'd really enjoy that too!

It's the belief that men and women are different which enables the patriarchy. If we pretend men and women are exactly the same then all sex based oppression disappears.

Queer theory bullshit.

Thank you😊.

You can't state your beliefs without being abusive?

I confess I didn’t read the bullets because helle and I have a long history. I’ll see if I can give the other a go without breaking talking guidelines.

Did you actually read the post?

Did you even bother? I attempted several times to explain to you and others on the thread where you simply doubled done on censuring the language used and did not engage in a way that actually sought to understand what you clearly didn’t understand.

You have posted numerous times over the past days about how these male athletes don’t even win all the time. As if that mattered in discussing competitive advantage or the need to have a protected female sports category.

Do you or don’t you understand competitive advantage and why it matters to protecting female athletes from harm, including physical harm?

And by the way, this is an integral part of discussing the merits of the topic of the article you wanted to discuss.

GailBlancheViola · 04/08/2024 00:36

Not in my family. Female sports are preferred watching to the male sports and - shock, horror, hold the front page - by the men in the family as well.

Shennie100 · 04/08/2024 00:37

Alucard55 · 04/08/2024 00:15

one of the central points made in the article: accepting sex segregation in sport as the universal default reinforces harmful gender stereotypes, as well as sex segregation in other domains

Can someone much cleverer than me please explain this in simple terms?

Not cleverer than you- but I think OP is pretending that women not being identical to men, makes them inferior.
So- better to pit them against men and show they will lose, than allow them to just compete against each other, like men do.
Often people confuse "equal with" and "identical to". Often on purpose.

Your beliefs involve using a word so abusive that MNHQ won't let it stand?

And you still don't see the problem?

It's the logic my father used for hitting women. "They wanted equality."

I don't think even he ever expected it to become an Olympic sport, though.

GailBlancheViola · 04/08/2024 00:39

And the one thing that will cause the men to switch off and stop following female sport is the inclusion of men in it, so your grand idea Tandora would not only decimate female sport but would decimate the audience for it. Female sport is watched to see females perform well not males.
