to say women don't have XY chromosomes?

1000 replies

taylorswift1989 · 03/08/2024 11:55

Seeing a lot of posts on social media with people admitting they were "wrong" to call Imane Khelif a man, and that they now understand "she's a woman with XY chromosomes."

Am I going insane? A person with XY chromosomes is male! (Regardless of how they identify, of course.) Why are people saying stuff that is obviously nonsensical? Are people really that ignorant of basic biological facts?

Given the controversy, I think maybe blood tests need to be introduced.

So as not to just mess up women's sports because of men, all athletes not just females.

Test the blood, get the chromosal result.

The precise genetic result should be kept as medically private information, the same way athlete's dates of births are.

But the result of "does contain a Y chromosome" or "doesn't contain a Y chromosome" should be no more considered private medical information than their ages are. The sporting bodies should at least have this information to make a decision on eligibility.

Their criteria for who is eligible should have to be clear, for example "doesn't have a Y chromosome, rather than "underwent an unspecified test, the results of which we can't release"

spannasaurus · 03/08/2024 17:34

The IOC pretty much confirmed that it was a DSD issue when they had to issue a correction to a statement given at a press conference

I think the William’s sisters are amazing and I would never characterise their performance as equivalent to a “mediocre”
or “shit man”. I’m sure they’d smash 99.9% of men in a tennis match.

Let’s not underplay and degrade women’s talent in sport.

Serena in particular has very muscly arms which I’m sure many of the women on your side of this debate would object to.

100% I’m a feminist,

Edited

The Williams sisters are far from mediocre and not one person has said the performance of female champions is mediocre. You're arguing they are mediocre if they can't beat mediocre men.

Those of us still tethered to reality can acknowledge their achievements without deluding ourselves about their chances in a game with a pretty average male player.

I can't decide if it's other people posts or your own that you are either not reading or not understanding.

You seem a bit confused, maybe read the thread and come back to it?

She’s not the least confused , absolutely on the money.

I just did a very unscientific experiment with my DS aged 13, about 1 inch taller than me (but lighter !) - he is far, far stronger than me.

My 16 year old is almost a foot taller than me, but about half my weight and he is stronger than me too. Wonder what difference that makes in sports that require power, like I don't know lets say boxing?

YellowAsteroid · 03/08/2024 17:35

For those of you who want a genuine scientist's viewpoint & information, here's a Twitter/X thread from Dr Emma Hilton, a qualified expert evolutionary biologist, who knows about this stuff:

I'd trust this over all the men's rights activists ...

I haven't read the whole thread yet, but I can't believe the irony/hypocrisy of all the gender critical people on here. When so many people are being transphobic all I hear is " If you have a vagina you are a woman, no penis- you are a woman." Ffs, make your bloody minds up. For the hard of thinking...She is a woman!

I think when gender critical women are writing ‘vagina’ you really need to read that as ‘vagina, cervix, ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterus, eggs etc etc etc’. The requirement really isn’t just an opening and a fleshy tunnel. The fleshy tunnel needs to attach to some fertility equipment that could gestate a foetus .

Do you believe a ‘trans man’ should box in the female category?

californiaisdreaming · 03/08/2024 17:36

If it can be done with a cheek swab instead of a blood test, even better.

Tiredmumtoboy · 03/08/2024 17:36

Bambooshoot · 03/08/2024 17:33

He was tested with a cheek swab that showed he was a man, XY. Hope this helps.

Oh... A cheeky swob... 😅 That can definitely be faulty when checking for umm... DNA

They should doing their own tests and test blood test for T, DNA and enhancement drugs.

@GargoylesofBeelzebub
it is true.

None of us have seen any test results. We still don’t know on what specific evidence the IBA chose to disqualify Yin and Khelif for ‘not meeting the gender category criteria’.

All of this is assumption on how Khelif looks.

Does it matter what the criteria were? They failed to qualify to compete with women. Except in this one space, due to administrative processes.

This. A female reproductive system as opposed to a male one, is what it means.

Do you agree with a transman competing in women’s boxing?
Your question is irrelevant because she is NOT trans🙄

Correct,he's a man.

It's Twitter/Reddit level discourse, which works there where you can either block or restrict replies or control the narrative with selective moderation, but not here where it will be dissected by people who know why you're talking bollocks.

KielderWater · 03/08/2024 16:15

The tests was carried out by two independent organisations and approved by the Court of Arbitration in Sport - the same organisation the IOC delegate doping decisions to.

Please can you provide a link for this. I have read so much and can’t find anything like this anywhere.
Also with Lin Yu-ting they specifically said she failed a biochemical test. So not a gender test. So why did they use a biochemical test for Yu-ting but a genetic one for Khelif?

HappiestSleeping · 03/08/2024 17:39

KielderWater · 03/08/2024 17:26

You mean if you ignore the court of arbitration for sport?

https://www.tas-cas.org/en/general-information/index/

I haven't seen any report of a proved XY chromosome from a reliable body. The IOC haven't seen one, and none of the news outlets have seen one. There is a rumour about a previous test, but nobody ever supplied the test result.

That isn't to say it doesn't exist, or that there is no XY chromosome. Just that there is no evidence.

I couldn't see it in the link you sent either.

Tandora · 03/08/2024 17:33

But none of this suggests that top female althletes have the equivalent performance of “shit” and “ mediocre” men. Which is what I was objecting to. This use of language is not only wrong but degrading to women’s sports. There’s nothing mediocre about the men competing in the swimming olympics.

Do you understand that the men who cheat their way into female sport whether that's because they have a DSD or they are 'self identifying' would never get near qualifying for the male Olympics?

They are not the same men. Male athletes who are good enough to be in the Olympics compete as men.

If not 'mediocre' what word would you use for men, not good enough to make it in elite men's sport, who cheat their way into female sport?

My cat's had his testicles removed.

Pretty sure that hasn't made him female.

External genitalia is not the determining factor.

StepAwayFromGoogling · 03/08/2024 17:40

Just going to post this here again: https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/differences-in-sex-development/ only in a VERY rare case does the presence of a Y chromosome result in a female sex AND THEY WOULD NOT DEVELOP ANY MALE CHARACTERISTICS. I think it is VERY clear Khalif has gone through male puberty.

Oh dear.

Do you know how many cells are collected in one cheek swab? Have you ever worked in a forensic testing lab? Do you think they do each test once? 😀

Honestly, you ploppers are hilarious. And youve left it toonlate, the thread is almost full, with same, rational people that can see cheating and unfairness, bar the odd exception who are using DSD to further their nonsensical ide tity politics. For what reason, we'd need psychiatrist to work that one out.
