to say women don't have XY chromosomes?

taylorswift1989 · 03/08/2024 11:55

Seeing a lot of posts on social media with people admitting they were "wrong" to call Imane Khelif a man, and that they now understand "she's a woman with XY chromosomes."

Am I going insane? A person with XY chromosomes is male! (Regardless of how they identify, of course.) Why are people saying stuff that is obviously nonsensical? Are people really that ignorant of basic biological facts?

I don’t have all the answers here. I think there needs to be some stratification of sport - eg we have the paraolympics etc. in fact I think there should be much more stratification, to highlight lots more talent and improve inclusion. not sure whether binary sex should remain one simple stratification, or there should be more nuanced criteria. If binary sex remains the stratification I think the current rules - which allowed the Algerian boxer to fight in the women’s sports- are completely fine and appropriate.

Are you aware that many of the sports at the Olympics would exclude the boxers in question from the female category? They wouldn't be able to rowing or compete in triathlon as female.

@StressedAndDepressed1 what's he holding here then? And I will keep posting this, there is also a video. He won because he cheated!

She was raised as a woman, she was born with a vagina.

Do you think that people born with vaginas are men?

What do YOU think?

By the way, do you know how genitals are formed?

AIstolemylunch · 03/08/2024 17:22

NImumconfused · 03/08/2024 17:19

If that's the case why does Khelif wear typically male clothes - surely that gwould be unacceptable for a woman in a very Conservative country?

And no hijab

@taylorswift1989 I haven't read the full thread, however there is no definite evidence that she has XY chromosomes, so what I have read of this thread is moot. It isn't if there it ends up that there are XY, but currently there is no reliable proof.

californiaisdreaming · 03/08/2024 17:23

I think if you want to compete in a female category and have a blood test confirming your cells have Y chromosomes then you should not have the right to withhold this information.

You shouldn't have that right the same way if you take lots of steroids you don't have the right to withhold that information.

If you do, you're cheating.

Do you think that people born with vaginas are men?

Do you think people who probably have internal testes and have the physical advantages bestowed by male puberty should compete in women's sport?

StressedAndDepressed1 · 03/08/2024 17:15

She does not have a penis. She is from a very conservative country, in which she would be killed if she was trans.

And she just won again!!

Firstly he isn't trans and secondly Iran, a conservative country, is the global leader in "sex reassignment surgery", they prefer surgical harmed men to gay men.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 03/08/2024 17:23

I think the William’s sisters are amazing and I would never characterise their performance as equivalent to a “mediocre”
or “shit man” as the poster did I was objecting to. I’m sure they’d smash 99.9% of men in a tennis match.

They were both beaten by a single man, who'd had a few beers and cigarettes and wasn't taking it particularly seriously, when they were younger. He was seeded 200 odd.

Tandora · 03/08/2024 17:23

NonPlayerCharacter · 03/08/2024 17:21

As number 50000 on the list of things Tandora cannot grasp, it's a different between equality and fairness. Suppose we have a male athlete who ranks poorly among other males but fairly among women. The fight between him and another woman (who will rank much higher in her sex class than he will in his, thanks to male advantage) might, possibly be "fair" in that it is fairly matched, but it is still a loss of equality. Because an exceptional woman has lost her spot for competition against this unexceptional male. For every crap male who takes this place, an exceptional female has missed her chance because of his advantage, not because she wasn't good enough as a woman.

Tandora has literally just admitted that she doesn't see the point of female athletes if men can beat them. What level, then, is she holding this discussion on? She literally doesn't think women in sports matter at all, yet will argue for days about a male's right to be counted among them and lauded...

I'm sure someone else's has probably posted this but there is a condition called Swyer syndrome. It's where gonads that should have turned into testicals just don't and the person develops as a woman instead. It's extremely EXTREMELY rare. The gonads often end up being removed as well because they turn cancerous.

The person may never know that they are genetically male or would only find out at pubity.

In this case though... I think it's testing error and the person is doping with extra T or steroids.

KeirSpoutsTwaddle · 03/08/2024 17:24

Worth saying really frequently, @Runningupthecurtains !

These two boxers can’t compete against women in other Olympic sports.
They do not meet the criteria to compete as women in other sports
The fact that an administrative situation means they have been allowed to beat women up in public is shocking. In comparison not in sprinting, not in long distance running- but yes, welcome to women’s boxing.

Do you have any idea how fucking AMAZING a man has to be at tennis to be seeded 200 in the world?
He beat them once when they were younger you say?
Yeh sounds like proof they are as good at tennis as a “shit”, “mediocre” man 👍🏻

Let’s not underplay and degrade women’s talent in sport.

Serena in particular has very muscly arms which I’m sure many of the women on your side of this debate would object to.

100% I’m a feminist,

Edited

It's you who is doing that. Serena has talked about not being able to beat men who are fairly low ranked in men's tennis. I think she even had a match with one of them who beat her in every set by some way.

You seem to want to avoid the reality of what being female in this world means. This doesn't help women at all.

Swyers doesn't make sense in the context.

(The IBA)...
said it wasn't testosterone that ruled them ineligible, but a "gender test" (aka a Y chromosome in there somewhere)

However they also said they had been shown to have an advantage, which hints at them also having testosterone readings - as that it what would show a biological advantage.

You mean if you ignore the court of arbitration for sport?

DSDs are quite unusual. Surprisingly there are a lot of ‘women’ with DSDs in the Olympics. I wonder why that is? I wonder why 3 women with DSDs won all the medals in the 800m one year?

I find it surprising that someone with a health condition would do so well at sport- actually competing among the top athletes in the entire world.

Unless something about that DSD gave them an advantage, like maybe, a female birth certificate combined with all the advantages of male puberty.

This was puzzling me, if DSD is so rare why so many athletes. Read an article in the Times which said that coaches in some African countries seek out these people to train as they have an advantage!

Yes. Your point? That women have penises, female athletes don't matter because men can beat them, understanding biological reality makes one a "sex fascist", and far too much more to list, but it's other people who can't grasp things?
