To dismiss a guy pursuing me, because he likes metal music?

A nice guy is pursuing me. I don't know him much yet, but he is nice so far.

Something that is making me have 2nd thoughts though... Is that he loves metal music.

I frigging hate metal music.

I like pop, rock, reggae, soul, house, disco, grunge, classical.... Anything but metal. I cant bear to listen to even 30 seconds of metal. To me, it sounds totally demonic. I cannot comprehend why someone would want to listen to that.

I spend a large portion of every day with music playing.

This guy says he listens to metal 80% of the time.

I'd love to meet someone who I can really vibe and dance with, and just enjoy listening to the same music together.

AIBU to dismiss a guy for his music tastes? Even if he is a nice guy, respectful, handsome, very sporty/muscly...?

My oh only listened to metal when we first met, after 14 years together his tastes have diversified 😄

Okay so this is me and you thinking the same, from different angles 🙃

Absolutely. It depends how important music is to you both, I suppose.

I’ve had decades of sharing a house with dh and music is playing every day. If we didn’t have the broad middle ground of compatibility we’d probably be divorced by now, only slightly joking.

There are headphones for a reason.

I can't wear headphones as I get a headache.

I just cancelled tomorrow 's date.
I felt relieved at the decision.
But he was such a gentleman now I also feel a bit regretful.
But, what's done is done.

Well you could have let a really good one go but at least you’ll never know.

I'm surprised you like grunge but not metal? Alice in Chains and Soundgarden had metal roots. Their music was arguably more metal than grunge. The two genres aren't that far apart.

Metal is a huuuuge musical genre with many sub genres.

@PyongyangKipperbang
"Did you see the school orchestra (think they may have been Australian....) playing Enter Sandman?! It was AMAZING!! The girl on the flute was totally rocking out! Its on Youtube if you havent."

I don't think so but will def look it up when I get home. Thanks for the recommendation. 🙂

OP It's probably a relief that you've made your decision. I'm sure, as you feel so passionately about music, that you'll meet someone with the same interests, and in the meantime I'm sure your music makes life more interesting anyway.

This thread has made me want to read "High Fidelity" again. I love the fact that there are now playlists for books like this that you can listen to at the same time.

I know, it's weird. But it's just once the drums cross a certain threshold into being too fast and relentless, and the vocals become just that bit too shouty.... I just suddenly switch to, "omg, turn it off, turn it off!!!!"

I’m not really into that kind of music but I really love Down in a Hole by Alice in Chains.
