To ask what ‘far right’ means to you?

Let’s not make this a Southport thread, just a political one. I consider myself a centrist and voted Lib Dem (to get us back in EU but that’s another story).

There’s been a lot of talk of ‘far right’ on here over the last few days, but very few observations on what far right actually means. To me it means things like capital punishment, enforced religion, open state misogyny, a blanket ban on abortion, homosexuality being outlawed, that sort of thing.

To me, having justified concerns about immigration, having views on new house building, voting Conservative or disapproving of Just Stop Oil protestors doesn’t make you ‘far right’. Centre or right of centre perhaps, but not far right.

What do you think?

I've got more chance of being in charge of the UK than Tommy Robinson - honestly don't give him and his cronies much thought - you're wasting your brain cells if you do.

@CassieMaddox it's very relevant because our PM announced today that he wants to form a National Police Group to respond to riots. Great in theory.

Will everyone be equally happy to send the National Riot Squad in to deal with the yobs in both Southport and Harehills?

I would, but the difficulty arises if the rioters are from a non-UK immigrant group, such as Harehills, who could declare it as 'racist' which could then easily extrapolate to accusing the Police of using far-right, xenophobic attacks against them. Not so much objections could arise if the rioters were only a bunch of white yobs.

A national riot squad. It’s really gathering pace and I thought we’d be here and similar to EU countries about now

Not sure you can suppress the issues out of people instead of addressing them

I suppose you need to ask China or Russia if that's your plan of action for top tips ?
Or you could ask the Conservatives, those that are left, they were in power for 14yrs compared with Labours short weeks, how did they address peoples issues ? They were centre right so if that's the way you lean, what did they do right ?

Why would I ask China or Russia

I’m not sure who you are addressing here as it doesn’t make sense.

China and Russia suppress and I just said I’m not convinced it will work

TheHateIsNotGood · 01/08/2024 21:59

I'm not sure either Cassie as my experience of these Special Squads in days of yore were that they were the epitome of Right-wing thugs themselves and being big, burly and thick appeared to be a prerequisite to get the job.

Hopefully now better use is made of the smaller, strong and swifter police officers now

The last 'national riots' were the Poll Tax riots - what's happening now are localized single issue riots which change nothing and only destroy. Better let the regular Police get on with 'policing' whilst the Riot Squad quells the riots.

It’s a meaningless phrase these days and basically means “anyone who believes things I don’t agree with”.

This.
You really have to look at the people being branded it. Sometimes it might just mean they don’t think men should be allowed to enter women’s sports.

There were national riots in 2011.

I really don't think fascism has much traction in the UK. Even in Cornwall we manage to rub along with POC -- once they've learned to eat pasties and put the jam on their scones first.

A pointless question? Why?

Someone said the U.K. under Tommy Robinson would result in women experiencing oppression equal to that of women in Saudi.

I am no fan of Tommy Robinson, but I am a fan of keeping conversations realistic.

I want to know what that poster thinks Tommy Robinson would or could possibly do to oppress women to the same level women are oppressed in Saudi Arabia?

Dymaxion · 01/08/2024 22:05

@EasternStandard I was simply saying those countries are Gold Standard when it comes to suppressing their populations, so if any Government truly was thinking of going down that road, those are your go to peeps for advice . But as I also said how did the centre right Conservatives address peoples issues ? They had 14 years and Labour has had a few weeks ?

lollipoprainbow · 01/08/2024 22:10

According to MN anyone who cares about their country and has concerns about mass immigration.

The far left are full of anger and hatred too. Some people even hate people for drinking bitter and eating a fry-up abroad!

Dymaxion · 01/08/2024 22:12

@lollipoprainbow which bit of of the migration figures under the Conservatives, bothers you the most ?

I wouldn’t be keen on that kind of suppression, I’d loathe it so I hope we don’t go there and that advice is the last thing I’d want. But I can see further issues growing

I think deterrents do work although it was scrapped at GE, however the U.K. isn’t really dealing with this and I compare more to Aus policy and imo we’ll see a widening between EU / U.K. and Aus

Aus won’t face the same issues and pressures as they put policies in place decades ago. I see the trajectory here and think it could get worse

Another option is co ordinated legal change b/n countries

You also claim Reform are far right.

anger and hate are the words that come to mind when I hear hard right

I would trust the National Riot Squad to be the professionals and decide on the appropriate plan of action. Because they are the professionals, not me. And because it's important to society and democracy to let people do their job

Your debate tactics are wearing a title thin and becoming tedious now.

Deny you’ve said something, restate the exact same things again, ad hominem x repeat

This is absolute fantasy.

Who is the “far right”? You mean, someone like Nigel Farage?

What do you see changing for women under Nigel Farage that would result in them experiencing the same oppression as women in Saudi?

Oh dear.
Read the whole thread. It will help. And stop defending thugs. It will also help.

How is wanting to know exactly how women are at immediate risk of being equally oppressed to women in Saudi defending thugs?

Do you have the capacity to discuss anything in good faith?

I haven't said Reform is far right.
I've said multiple times Nigel Farage very carefully goes as close to the line of being a fascist as he can without crossing it.

It's irrelevant as they aren't in power and won't be in power.

Aren’t the National Riot Squad already in existence, just a new name for a bigger version of the football hooliganism police?
