To ask what ‘far right’ means to you?

Let’s not make this a Southport thread, just a political one. I consider myself a centrist and voted Lib Dem (to get us back in EU but that’s another story).

There’s been a lot of talk of ‘far right’ on here over the last few days, but very few observations on what far right actually means. To me it means things like capital punishment, enforced religion, open state misogyny, a blanket ban on abortion, homosexuality being outlawed, that sort of thing.

To me, having justified concerns about immigration, having views on new house building, voting Conservative or disapproving of Just Stop Oil protestors doesn’t make you ‘far right’. Centre or right of centre perhaps, but not far right.

What do you think?

I think if you’ve actually read my posts you will see that at no point have I said any of what you’re spouting.

I'm not really clear what Afghanistan has to do with anything Confused

I’m struggling to grasp how offensive it is to pretend women in the uk face or are likely to face anything close to the insane oppression women face in Saudi.

How does the femicide rate compare between the UK and Saudi Arabia? That would be a good measure.

Papyrophile · 01/08/2024 21:24

When Michael Gove said the UK had had enough of "experts", he meant that everyone had had enough of self-proclaimed experts who had strong opinions but no practical experience. It's an unpopular point of view, but I think he was right.

Adult DS was radicalised by alt right, This topic is a bit personal to me.
I suppose common features I perceive are...

... angry, resentful but of what... sometimes is vague
.... compassion deficit
... low or no appreciation or even condemnation of cultural diversity
.... parochial
... nativist, tribal
... prefer majoritarianism over democracy

So the current government in Afganistán is centre left?

Who said that? Not me

And to correct myself I meant Harehills, not Harefields when I was explaining that 'rioting mobs' are becoming more frequen, not just the far-right ones.

I think those calling too many people 'far-right' and anti-this and that are doing themselves a great disservice because most won't go out and riot but ignore you instead.

It would be if Saudi deemed femicide something worthy of recording properly.

No he didn't. He wanted Brexit and he wanted to undermine logic and fact to achieve it, as logic and fact would show Brexit was a bad idea. So he said that. A classic fascist tactic and he should be ashamed.

FWIW I don't think Gove is fascist, but employing their tactics opens the doors to those that are.

Dymaxion · 01/08/2024 21:34

No there will be a handful that are but it seems to be everyone is getting labeled as them and that is not fair. I have seen some horrific videos of the police walking up to people and beating them so to me going by what I have saw the police seem to be more of the violent thugs. We don't know what happens before and after pictures.

That is such a lovely liberal attitude, all those nice men, didn't see a women amongst them, going to a vigil and being all peaceful and respectful and then accidentally getting involved in mass disorder and violence, perhaps chucking bricks is some sort of art installation akin with a Banksy ? Street sculpture ?

What is this obsession with Harehills? Completely different circumstances, not comparable and so irrelevant but some people really seem to have a bee in their bonnet. Coincidentally it appears often to be the same ones who are sympathetic to Tommy Robinson, not that I'm saying that's you pp

What were the different circumstances and how do they make it irrelevant?

@CassieMaddox you and I might not ever agree on the rights and wrongs of this argument and how it is playing out. I thought about the referendum vote long and hard, and eventually asked my DC aged 17, which way to vote as they would have to live with the choice. And I followed instructions. I could then, and can see now, the advantages and disadvantages of both courses of action.

What were the different circumstances and how do they make it irrelevant?

  1. it was local people not people who travelled in

  2. it happened spontaneously in response to an event, not preplanned over the previous 24 hours

  3. it wasn't whipped up by misinformation online potentially originating from a hostile foreign state

Although I suspect that was a faux naive question 🤔

You’re saying if we voted in Reform, we’d be immediately plunged into the same level of oppression as women in Saudi face?

I'm not talking about the referendum and how people chose to vote. I'm talking about the unintended consequences of the strategy in legitimising fascist tactics.

So rioting is permissible under these specific circumstances?

You also claim Reform are far right.

TheHateIsNotGood · 01/08/2024 21:44

@CassieMaddox it's very relevant because our PM announced today that he wants to form a National Police Group to respond to riots. Great in theory.

Will everyone be equally happy to send the National Riot Squad in to deal with the yobs in both Southport and Harehills?

I would, but the difficulty arises if the rioters are from a non-UK immigrant group, such as Harehills, who could declare it as 'racist' which could then easily extrapolate to accusing the Police of using far-right, xenophobic attacks against them. Not so much objections could arise if the rioters were only a bunch of white yobs.

This is absolute fantasy.

Who is the “far right”? You mean, someone like Nigel Farage?

What do you see changing for women under Nigel Farage that would result in them experiencing the same oppression as women in Saudi?

I really don't think fascism has much traction in the UK. Even in Cornwall we manage to rub along with POC -- once they've learned to eat pasties and put the jam on their scones first.

Bit of a pointless question given he has buggered off to Spain yet again, on his Irish passport, I suppose you could ask his Ex wife ? She probably has a fairly good idea of his ideology regarding the better sex Wink
