To ask what ‘far right’ means to you?

Let’s not make this a Southport thread, just a political one. I consider myself a centrist and voted Lib Dem (to get us back in EU but that’s another story).

There’s been a lot of talk of ‘far right’ on here over the last few days, but very few observations on what far right actually means. To me it means things like capital punishment, enforced religion, open state misogyny, a blanket ban on abortion, homosexuality being outlawed, that sort of thing.

To me, having justified concerns about immigration, having views on new house building, voting Conservative or disapproving of Just Stop Oil protestors doesn’t make you ‘far right’. Centre or right of centre perhaps, but not far right.

What do you think?

I disagree. Gender ideology is a left wing vehicle - that’s why you won’t find Trump, Tommy Robinson, or Le Pen supporting and promoting it, only the Labour Party and other left wing groups.

How do you explain the fact that it became insidious under the Conservative government?

Frowningprovidence · 01/08/2024 20:30

I always have to look up what far right or far left means. I think I know then I forget again.

I think it's very nationalistic and authoritarian about it.

RedPoster · 01/08/2024 20:30

Daltonbear1 · 01/08/2024 20:28

Agree but they uses to say that Nazis we’re socialists because if the word national socialism forgetting that Nazis killed communists

First they came for the communists and I did not speak out…

It’s not really a valid argument to claim that the Conservative Party in the UK are to the extreme right. Often the centre ground is the winner in the uk.
Labour are generally left of centre and the conservatives right of centre. Different flavours of the month will have a peppering of views that lean a bit further right or further left but by and large the tories are not the extreme right and no reasonable person claims that.

That’s why I said ‘allegedly’

If you think I’m here to defend the conservative government you’re very much mistaken! I think they took a lazy and permissive approach until the end when they nailed their colours to the mast.

You r showing that you r the far right yourself quoting far right people you do know that there is centre right to . You can be progressive less socially conservative but be on the right to. Any way you like Lib Dem’s apparantly yet they are very trans friendly I wouldn’t say the Lib Dem’s are on the left I say centre

OonaStubbs · 01/08/2024 20:33

It means the Third Reich and the Holocaust.

If going on holiday and eating a full English breakfast and drinking John Smiths is far right, what do you call actual Nazis?

So anybody who ‘quotes’ a right wing person is far right? Including you as you’ve reposted me?

To me far right is an authoritarian state that doesn't tolerate dissent, manipulates information, and promotes citizens self-surveillance.
Just the same as far left.

Uricon2 · 01/08/2024 20:34

If the Tory party were far right, they would never have elected Rishi Sunak as leader. Anyone who understands the real motivations of the extreme Right knows that.

(God alone knows why I'm defending them except out of fairness, never voted for them in my life)

Rainbowsponge · 01/08/2024 20:30

Well you say allegedly and then you also claim the conservatives make the left wing uneasy as there’s no explanation. Most people wouldn’t class the Conservative Party in the UK as very right wing. Sometimes more right wing policies to pander to populists but overall they are centre right.

Stubbornmules · 01/08/2024 20:35

I think of "far right" as a set of behaviours and attitudes so anyone that is - homophobic, misogynistic/anti-womens rights, anti-Semitic, thinks their culture/race/country is superior to all others, dislikes any race other than their own, dislikes any religion other than their own, intolerant of other views, violent, admires Hitler and the Nazis.

Many, many countries and cultures (many non-white) throughout the world could therefore be described as "far right", I don't think this description can only be applied to people in this country.

They never did the conservative membership rejected him it was the tory mps that chose him and believe me they many Tory types never saw him as British you see the same sort in twitter claiming that lad born in wales the mass murderer wasn’t British.

Yea, I completely agree. You can be any colour/race/size and identify as whatever species you like. Anyone can hold ‘extreme’ views, it doesn’t matter if you are in the majority, minority or an AI bot.

Interesting point.

Labour have only voted for white men to lead them. Conservatives have had three women and a man of Asian heritage.

Winederlust · 01/08/2024 20:39

zaffa · 01/08/2024 19:52

As i grew up in an ultra far right conservative country, I can answer what it means to me.

To me, it means racism, advocating segregation, encouraging othering and scapegoating minorities. It means strict conservative values, no reproductive rights, limited women's rights, 'traditional' nuclear family values and shut down of any sort of homosexuality.

It means sending the army in, armed with live weapons, if there is peaceful protest because peaceful protest is unlawful.

It is not the concerns over immigration, it is the othering of immigrants that is right wing, the othering of homosexuality, of women's rights, the promotion of religion and enforcement of it into daily life.

This sums it up rather nicely I think.

The 'southport mob' types are just the ignorant people who proponents of such political ideology use as their pawns to stir up unrest so they can grab power.

dottiehens · 01/08/2024 20:40

lilyrabbit2 · 01/08/2024 18:56

I know you said not to mention Southport but those rioters epitomise far right for me. Thick, white, middle aged, small minded men who can't tolerate or understand anything other than their own narrow views. Hence why they also hate homosexuality and women. And why they go abroad to order full English breakfasts and pints of John smiths. To me it's pure ignorance teamed with aggression. If they don't want to learn about other ways of life, fine. But they actively try to violently abolish them.

I have a problem when someone add the word white like you did. It is wrong to call on white men like that.
I also can’t get passed pejorative terms to define white people like Gammons and insults that on the left they consider ok. I think is hugely hypocritical and wrong.

As for this post OP look at the votes in your YANBU. That is your answer Most people won’t reply or debate this as we know how it goes here. Basically your definition is spot on.

Daltonbear1 · 01/08/2024 20:41

The far right are scum and those that say they have been called it for what, I say if you have then there must be a reason. Simply discussing immigration isn’t far right however claiming that migrants are out to get you. They don’t work or kill Mir then non migrants is stereotypical . The problem is since the tories have been in power we have lurched so far to the right. I looked at old national front leaflets and now mainstream politicians were repeating stuff you would have found on them. Some people should be ashamed like people wishing boats sank with immigrants on. I heard people ring radio and say that. They wouldn’t have dared a few years ago

@RedPoster I was hoping at least one would get over their rage and read (a bit) and I was being very generalistic about Corbyn. Your user name seems very apt. It's ok, I prefer to be floater, but I'm happy to hear your suggestions.

And with regards to Hitler's Nazi (National Socialist) Party, in it's beginnings it did include the Socialists as they too were unhappy with the post-Versailles Weimar Govt. Goebbels was one of the Socialist leaders and Hitler enticed him on board for his 'talents' whilst planning to eliminate the rest.

Excellent series currently on PBS explaining just that.

Did you hear about that guy that used wording from Nazi leaflets but changed the word ‘Jew’ to ‘Muslim’ and it went viral on Facebook.? It’s rife out there.
