Lin Yu-ting and Imane Khelif: Boxers cleared for Paris Olympics - BBC Sport

They are both biological males. Its to IOC, International Olympic committee. There will be a protest and i know another female Irish boxer has pulled out but surely this cant stand. The women could be seriously injured.

Imane Khelif and Lin Yu-ting

Lin Yu-ting and Imane Khelif: Boxers cleared for Paris Olympics

Two athletes are cleared to compete at the women's boxing at the Paris Olympics, having been disqualified from last year's World Championships for failing to meet eligibility criteria.

Truly, no I don’t think they look like men, just very androgynous. There aren’t any obvious Adam’s apples on the photos you’ve shown, unfortunately. That’s actually what I was hunting for when I was Googling!

It’s entirely possible that they have a DSD condition which may or may not have been apparent at birth (it isn’t always!) Without full access to their medical records, which none of us have any right to, nobody should really speculate.

It’s a bit off to declare that they are biological men who want to abuse women when nobody knows fuck all about either of them.

We know they failed the IBA eligibility test to enter women’s sport.

We know they are still boxing against women.

What else do we need to know? They aren’t eligible except on an administrative technicality. They are hitting women using the strength and speed of men.

Honestly, what else matters?

edited for IOC/IBA typo.

Where is your proof that they are biological men? How do you know that they are not intersex? Would you say that an intersex person who outwardly presented and identified as male but had some XX chromosomes amongst some XY chromosomes was biologically female?

What I don't get is if indeed, the circumstances of her sex is so obviously that she is stronger, why did she only come at 33rd place in 2019 world championship?

I think it is sad that clearly most posters here are crying outrage and linking this to male violence against women without even bothering taking any time to do even the most basic research on what DSD mean.

The cynic in me says either they didn’t train hard believing they were naturally stronger, or they are their team wanted to fool women into thinking they weren’t a threat so they could enter the big stage quietly, as they have done.

Yes great… a step forward for trans people at the expense (AGAIN) of women’s rights

They have XY chromosomes. That has been confirmed. There is no such thing as “intersex”. There are males or females with DSDs. These are males. We don’t know if they have DSDs or are trans or chancers.

Careful, you'll pull it clean off if you don't leave it alone.

LaeralSilverhand · 01/08/2024 14:47

@NotBadConsidering Tokyo Olympic boxing was NOT run by the IOC. It was run by the IBA as amateur boxing normally is. Neither of these two individuals are permitted to box in the female category under IBA rules which operate a strict genetic test: anyone with a Y chromosome is excluded.

However the IBA and IOC had a big tiff last year over dodgy Russian money and the IOC kicked the IBA out and decided to administer the boxing directly themselves. And promptly forgot to write a DSD and trans policy. Hence the shitshow we have now.

Frenchsplit · 01/08/2024 14:47

@WetBandits how they look has nothing to do with it. Testing has shown they should not be competing in women’s boxing

TheKeatingFive · 01/08/2024 14:47

jellycakeandicecream · 01/08/2024 14:38

If it was so obvious, why did they compete at Tokoyo with literally no fuss made? Or the 2022 World Championships - again with no fuss made?

I expect those poor women having to compete against them were fully aware of the situation but were unfortunately unable to get anyone to help them draw attention to it.

These men 100% know they are men. Why on earth are you making excuses for them? 🤯

holju · 01/08/2024 14:47

My male partner, who has always never seen a problem with TWAW, has had his eyes opened today. He saw the footage on the BBC and was horrified. I think this might well wake some men up to what is going on, just a shame a woman had to get hurt for it to happen.

You can’t see the Adam’s apple on those photos? Are you serious?! Here, let me help you:

Of the two boxers this one is the most egregiously male looking. Every single photo I could find there was just no doubt at all. Khelif could be considered androgynous if I was feeling generous, but the Taiwanese boxer? Absolutely not & I'm surprised there's not more furore about it.

Yes. People who are qualified and people who cheat.

Intersex is a misleading term and many members of the community have asked for it not to be used as it promotes misinformation and is offensive to them.

What you mean is, with a difference/variation of sexual development. Such people are all male or female, they just have a variation in their sex pathway development.

It's unfortunate if a person's male DSD means their body hasn't developed in the right way for them to reach their desired sporting heights but that is also true of excellent swimmers with small feet or fabulous basketball players who are short.

Darling, no.

Go and look at a man (any man that you know to 100% be a man!), their neck will look very different to that. The bit you have circled isn’t where the Adam’s Apple would be. Your own neck would look the same if someone took a photo of you right now at the same angle

There are loads of potential reasons for this. Tokyo Olympic boxing was also run by the IOC who don’t want to test people. There could have been suspicions but no progress on figuring out how to broach the idea of testing. There could have been fears about legal ramifications. The Semenya case cost a lot of money through the Court of Arbitration for Sport. Then you add ambivalence about women’s concerns, sexism, misogyny etc etc.

There were no fears about legal rammifications as it literally wasn't a concern that she was biologically male despite how they looked.

She has failed an eligability test, and shouldn't be allowed to compete... but to say that before that test based purely on 'how she looks' is frankly disgusting. Plenty of brilliant athletes who maybe do not much up to some percieved ideas of 'feminine looks' - and they shouldn't be descriminated against.

Take the wonderful and beautiful Serena Williams. She's spoken about facing accusations of being born male due to her looks - should she have been banned from competing? Hell, there is even a documentary about it.

And quite honestly it doesn't matter. They are men, that is all we need to know.

How is everyone there going to participate in this spectacle? The officials, the staff, the coaches, the athletes, the spectators.

How can they all attend and stand there and watch? What will be going through their minds?

I don't think i could do that its like a weird movie or something.

Surely at some point you step back and say. 'i am sorry, i am really uncomfortable with this, this is wrong and i won't participate'.

The Italian government have spoken out and criticised as its their female boxer but i think they and others need to do more.

There has been a great discussion of this on radio 5. Much of it is currently unproven media hype. Wait for some certainty before condemning people. If it is all media hype they will still never be free from doubt when competing. If true then it will be dealt with but death threats etc are not OK.

Frenchsplit · 01/08/2024 14:49

Ereshkigalangcleg · 01/08/2024 14:49

Remember the man who got in to the ring with a female MMA fighter a few years ago and cracked her skull open?

Fallon Fox, who boasted about how satisfying it was to beat up women he didn't agree with afterwards on a JKR thread.

Gcsunnyside23 · 01/08/2024 14:49

JusteanBiscuits · 01/08/2024 12:19

Didn't both of these fighters appear to be female at birth? These aren't trans women. The language used in this thread about them is pretty disgusting.

Yes but they are biologically male, they have xy chromosomes so they should not be competing against people who are biologically female, xx chromosomes. It's just plain dangerous to the other competitors as the differences in their bodies means its not an even close to fair fight and could cause serious damage or kill a female competitor.
They have been refused entry to other competitions due to having xy chromosome

It's not unproven media hype, have you seen the IBA statement?

gardenmusic · 01/08/2024 14:52

who wants to see a biological male in a boxing ring with a biological female?

Unfortunately, a lot of very warped men will have been watching this with glee.
A whole different type of 'entertainment' has been shown on here.
Is it me? I'm old.
Why are people pretending that they cannot see what is clearly before them?
I am looking at two men who for some reason are on the women's team
