Lin Yu-ting and Imane Khelif: Boxers cleared for Paris Olympics - BBC Sport

They are both biological males. Its to IOC, International Olympic committee. There will be a protest and i know another female Irish boxer has pulled out but surely this cant stand. The women could be seriously injured.

Lin Yu-ting and Imane Khelif: Boxers cleared for Paris Olympics

Two athletes are cleared to compete at the women's boxing at the Paris Olympics, having been disqualified from last year's World Championships for failing to meet eligibility criteria.

I know right! Where are those guys? They are usually here by page 2.

He's busy trying to wind up the women on another thread here tbh

You can’t expect reason from the people in this thread. They have a very narrow definition of what a woman is and should be.

Biology.

Pp can watch it here

Thank you for sharing the link. It's awful watching. Watching that poor woman crying is one of the worst things I've ever seen in sports.

Utter bastard.

Let's hope all the women who have to fight these two men have now been emboldened to do the same.

I never understand why transgender women even participate TBH. If you have any sense of sportsmanship then you know even if you 'win' you havent really won. You have basically exploited a loop hole and given yourself a massive unfair advantage.
I mean it would suck to have to give up a sport you were passionate about but at the same time how would you ever feel that you had won?

It is the nature of the thing - other people are only ever the support acts or the means of validation.

CantDealwithChristmas · 01/08/2024 11:53

Bears repeating. There is no female in existence who has anywhere near the level of testosterone that men have, even men with DSDs which mean low testosterone, or men who take oestrogen.

Some women can consistently show blood tests with higher than average levels of testosterone - I am one of them - but they are naturally occuring higher than average levels for women. Those results are still MULTIPLE FACTORS lower than even the lowest levels of tested tesoterone for men.

Edited

Absolutely Christmas.

As I posted from a PCOS advocate before:

PCOS raises female testosterone to up to 5.5 nmol/L (and above 4 can cause serious issues)

and above 5.5 is indications of a tumour or other life threatening condition.

The general male population for adults under 50 years old starts at 7.7 mol/L and goes to 29.4.

It's not really "good for her' though is it? It's fucking devastating for her, all that training and work and effort to be pitted against a man and have no choice but to throw it away, possibly her only chance at the Olympics, because she couldn't risk life changing injuries being punched in the face by a man. I don't think "good for her" is the appropriate response to what is an absolutely gutting, heart breaking decision for her to be forced to make. Her options were quit or be battered on live TV by a man. She didn't have a choice. Being forced into this is not "good for her".

This isn't some grand gesture or powerfully symbolic stance that she's chosen to take for the empowerment of women, this isn't a fist in the air and a middle finger to the Olympics, this is a young 25 year old woman having no choice whatsoever but to throw away her dream because she's been failed by the governing body that should be protecting her. It's tragic.

utterly heart broken for Angela. Just devastating for her.

Melroses · 01/08/2024 12:01

I am very sad that someone has had to have her nose broken, and am not sure that this will be an end to the ridiculous IOC rules, but I hope it is.

According to the the Telegraph Angela Carini has suffered a broken nose.

Flowergardenthrowaway · 01/08/2024 12:02

There is no concrete evidence that they are men though. Throughout their careers they have both performed as women causing no upset until a few years ago when a random journalist stated they had xx chromosome but there has never been any proof of this. Also the governing body who originally disqualified them from competing in India is notoriously corrupt.

Explained: The gender controversy miring women's Olympic boxing

Two Olympic boxers have found themselves at the centre of a fractious controversy in recent days, following a decision by the IOC to allow them to compete in Paris

Heckythump1 · 01/08/2024 12:03

There are rules, they can't just decide they're female and that's it, they're in.
They have to have been transitioning for a certain period of time and have a certain low level of testosterone (equivalent to that of a biological female) that has to have been tested numerous times before competition day.

I repeat it is not just any old bloke deciding they are female so they can win.

You seem confused, humans don’t decide who the women are, nature does that.

I can't see the Italian Government or the Italian Olympic Committee letting this go.

And more power to their elbows.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 01/08/2024 12:03

gailforce2 · 01/08/2024 11:44

All competitors should be sex tested - it is a simple mouth swab then have a passport for competition.
That would be fair but the Olympics is not about fair competition is it? Not even the semblance of fairness.

Indeed, but that's at risk of going down the same sewer as drug testing, where the WADA overturned Chinese athletes' suspensions after taking their own body's word for it about contamination: https://www.reuters.com/sports/olympics/more-historic-china-positive-drug-tests-cast-cloud-over-paris-swimming-2024-07-30/

As said it's a mssive shame for genuine competitors, but "shame" is something which the IOC seem all too comfortable with and it's degrading the Olympics almost beyond repair

Misthios · 01/08/2024 12:03

I think in this case the awful phrase "assigned female at birth" might actually make sense. Because in the absence of a penis, and without further testing available, nurses/midwives/doctors made their best guess at assessing the sex of the baby in front of them. And got it wrong.

Now, I think we cal ALL sympathise with families who have a child who has a DSD and are told they have to go through further testing to find out whether they are male or female and navigate the whole minefield of bringing them up. It must be very difficult. Especially in societies where attitudes are not as enlightened as they are in much of Western Europe.

But a line is most definitely crossed when people with DSDs are exploiting their male bodies to compete against women. All because a midwife put a cross in the wrong box on the birth certificate as she didn;t know whether she was dealing with a male or female baby. It is cheating, just like Lance Armstrong cheated. And it's a total disgrace that the IOC are OK with it. There is another case being widely reported in the Australian press about a player on the Zambia women's football team.

The IBA has released a statement making it clear their sex was verified without using testosterone. That means chromosomes. They’re men. You only have to look at Kharkiv fighting to see it.

Her hopes and dreams shattered. Am so fucking upset by this. To see her cry 😢

Her father’s death four years ago …. The commentator ignored the way she pulled hat hand away from the referee, her shouting it’s not fair in Italian to her corner, her refusal to congratulate her combatant and the way she fell to her knees sobbing and how the other boxer pursued her round the ring to pat her on the back in consolation. To train so long and hard for this to then face sanctioned cheating on such a grand public scale must be so devastating. What a brave woman to put her personal safety first when no one else would.
