Trying so hard with my twitching

Terrifiedshakes · 01/08/2024 00:46

See my other threads. I'm at a loss

I'm trying so hard to sort out why I'm twitching. I'm taking Kalm tablets now and I'm trying hard with breathing techniques

Yet I still continue to twitch all over my body. Every few mins there is a twitch and it can be anywhere.

I'm bow trying to fall asleep but I keep getting woken up by a massive twitch that feels like it's coming from my head. I'm terrified it's a seizure that I can't go back to sleep.

I am so very anxious though about these twitxhes. It's a vicious cycle. If they are anxiety related how do I break the cycle and why are they coming from my head and waking me up with such a jolt..

Please be gentle with me with your advice as I'm so scared I've got MS or a brain tumour or MND I'm sat here trembling with fear and the trembling is fear , the twitches are muscle.

I have Benign Mucsle Fascillation and it's exactly how you describe. Muscle twitches that can be anywhere on my body. Usually my worst ones are in my eyelids, lip, side of head and inside my ear. I once had a really noticeable one in the side of my nose, which I was given anti inflammatories for as it seemed to be connected to my bad neck.

Particularly weird are the ones I get in my stomach that feel like a baby kicking. Scared the life out of me.

I was really concerned too, but my tests were clear. My GP said it could be a combination of tense muscles, stress, tiredness and anxiety.

When I'm tired, they do get a lot worse.

Don't bother, she'll go on and on about anything but the real problem. Look her up, she has regular other threads as long as transsiberian rail line with exactly the same pattern.

I don’t mind reassuring someone who’s struggling, which she clearly is. Twitching is scary, I have it myself and I go through times when I feel absolutely terrified. Your mind runs away with you and you need someone to talk you down with logic and facts.

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 01/08/2024 01:23

Go to your GP and sort your anxiety out, stop Googling, take the advice given on your thread just the other day.
Taking kalms is not enough, also get a referral for a therapist or counsellor.

as for your head jerking as you are falling asleep, did you never see your children when they were little nodding off coz they were so tired but the nodding woke them again, have you never seen an adult sitting in a chair and nodding off whilst watching TV or something - that's where the phrase comes from ' nodding off '

Terrifiedshakes · 01/08/2024 01:24

Thanks Zusamme,

The Ms explanation makes sense. The MND explanation I kind of already knew as I've read it on here a couple of times. It's just very tricky to rationalise things when I get myself into such a state.

I do have burning joints and stiff joints but I've mentioned before I run very long distances, most days and never rest. I'm on holiday this week so resting from running, so I'm hoping the ankle and knee burning pain improves by the end of the week.

The head jerking when I was falling asleep then felt like a head tick. Very forceful. Its hard to accept anxiety can do that when I'm alseep.

It's really normal to have violent jerks as you fall asleep, or soon after you've fallen asleep. It's really normal for this to happen at times of stress and anxiety.

From the article @Luc99 shared:
How is myoclonus treated?
Normal forms of myoclonus typically don’t need treatment.

This tells you that "normal forms of myoclonus" exist.

Sounds like you've got yourself into a spiral, where your health anxiety prompts more twitches, so you get more anxious and ...

You really need to ask your GP about treatment for the anxiety. Did the meds help before?

Meanwhile, you're on holiday! Try and wear yourself out with swimming, running, whatever's available that you can do. Then have a warm shower before bed.

If you could reassure her, that would be fantastic. Thing is, she'll keep banging on about MS/MND now and no matter what you say anxiety wise will be swiftly ignored.

My son has epilepsy. Full tonic clonci seizures that stop breathing. I have to give him mouth to mouth and pumo his heart for him until the paramedics arrive. Then he will have abother and another. He has intention tremours and he constantly had little x
zappy jerks in his fingers, hands and body all day every day. He has ataxia and can't walk or talk but he understands everything. He is such a very happy little boy who finds everything funny.

This is not genetic. He has a gene change in himself which causes this.

I see his struggles everyday.

I don't know whey I've just typed that. I never talk about that. I crack on with it. But I hold my phone close every day he's at school. I've given my job up to be available for him.

Sometimes your emotions run away with you and you need someone else to tell you the facts and help you stop the cycle of worry.

Believe me - I have the same worries and I’ve seen multiple doctors. Your symptoms (and mine) don’t match those diseases. You don’t need to worry about it, go to sleep.

Garlicfest · 01/08/2024 01:32

Well, your son's condition helps to explain why you've become hypervigilant about twitches. If your mind can't separate your own body from his, you do need professional help. Some everyday anti-anxiety meds might do it, or you might need therapy as well.

Talk. To. Your. GP.

Terrifiedshakes · 01/08/2024 01:40

I'm in constant state of tension incase he has another seizure.

I feel guilty that he's disabled.

I fucking hate the sun because it brings out children to play outdoors and he cant independently play out, so I have to take him out and he's heavy and needs full support to access everything. It's lovely to see him so happy and socialising but he can't speak back to the children.. he must feel so locked in and I take the stress on.

We are on holiday now and the inevitable happens infront of him. We meet new children and they ask infront of him why he's in a wheelchair, why can't he talk. I do my thing of staying bright and cheery and explaining infront of him why he can't talk or walk. Inside I'm dieing. Inside he's locked in.

Hello. The sensation of falling as you fall asleep is called a hypnic jerk or a myoclonic jerk.
It is totally normal.

Google it and you will find lots of tips.

Terrifiedshakes · 01/08/2024 01:43

I don't go anywhere more then about 15 mins away from him incase he has a seizure. The neurologist has told me to keep him in my bed with me which I 100 percent agree with. My phone is by my side all the time.

Don't know why I'm typing all this. I've never.made a thread about it. Just made shit loads of threads about myself recently.

I know exactly what you mean about the head jerking thing that wakes you up. I’ve had this during a couple of times in my life when I’ve been very anxious. During those times I was convinced I had an illness but really it was stress/anxiety making me feel unwell and the symptoms making me worry even more

Terrifiedshakes · 01/08/2024 01:45

Shan, it feel like a full on shunt of my head that I can't control. It's very scary.

I had the same and also would wake up out of breath as though I’d been holding my breath. I was so exhausted from waking up and worrying xx

ButterCup1997 · 01/08/2024 01:53

Honestly this sounds like me a couple of years ago. I was completely convinced something was wrong. I went back to the doctors a few times and even ended up having a brain MRI. Everything came back normal but then I was worried something had been missed. I got into a complete spiral and the more anxious I was the worse the twitches and jerks were. I remember a few times having the sudden intense head jerk that you describe, before falling asleep. Once with a ‘flash of light’ behind my eyes. It really is a vicious cycle.
I still sometimes get occasional twitches but it’s much less often now. Please seek more help for your anxiety.

Terrifiedshakes · 01/08/2024 01:56

I'm hoping if they were some kind of seizure, if have had another one by now. I've been up probably around 40 mins and my heads not jerked or shunted once.

I've had a couple of muscle twitches in my body, but not too bad actually the last 40 mins.

I've also embarrassingly had a cry which obviously makes you feel better when you are tense. I've not cried for some time. I'm going to try to go back to sleep. I can feel I'm holding all my tension in my neck, so here goes...

Thanks again to everyone. When I'm back from holiday I will talk to GP about these twitches again and medication. The Dr didn't think I needed to go back on medication when I spoke to him on Monday but I think I really do.

Why are you all awake at this hour anyway?

If you all tell me its because you have been woken up by a head jerk , then I give up. :)

OP put the phone on silent in a different room, then go and wash your teeth, put pjs on and lie down in bed - sleep well x

Im in a different time zone, its only 6pm
here.

Your experiences with your child sound horrific and I’m not surprised you’ve got anxiety. There’s nothing anyone on here can do about it though - you must go to your gp and get it sorted. Best of luck

ButterCup1997 · 01/08/2024 02:04

I’m up as my 5 year old just woke from a bad dream bless her but just managed to get her back to sleep.

Hope you manage to get some rest @Terrifiedshakes. Try and enjoy the rest of your holiday.

maybe some CBT might help? Just an idea

Sorry I just read that back and it hasn’t come out like I intended! I don’t mean there’s nothing we can do about your child’s situation - I meant we can’t help you with your twitching. Please get yourself sorted, you don’t have to live with this level of anxiety.

Terrifiedshakes · 01/08/2024 02:09

SwingtheMonkey I know what you meant haha.

Thanks everyone. X
