THe upper middle class favour immigration

The upper middle class favour immigration because the alternative would be paying locals more and that would men them paying higher taxes to support the wage demands by care workers/Nurses/council workers etc.

ExLineManagerIsABully · 31/07/2024 23:01

so many GoadyMcBigots around these days.

bet they arrived on small boats or parents come from Rwanda eh OP??

BikesIHaveLost · 31/07/2024 23:03

Are the upper-middle class not ‘local’ too? I mean, where do they come from? Are they a sinister international cabal with a grudge against carers, nurses and council workers?

MadameMassiveSalad · 31/07/2024 23:05

Who's unleashed all the racist twats this week eh?

MrsSkylerWhite · 31/07/2024 23:06

If you say so, mate 🤣

Chrsytalchondalier · 31/07/2024 23:07

It's easy for very rich people to avoid paying all of the tax they should be, so I really don't think this would be a factor 🤷🏼‍♀️

MeouwCat · 31/07/2024 23:08

So, if we didnt import carers then what would happen? IO would work in a care home for 50k a year, so the reason we cant get carers is that the wages arent high enough.

Why is it racist to suggest that mass immigration shafts the working class?

Bluebellsanddaffodil · 31/07/2024 23:12

I'm probably middle class, probably not 'upper middle' I don't think (maybe I am - who knows) and you know what, I like immigration because I feel that immigrants bring massive cultural enrichment to our society in general. Whether someone is local or not, they would be entitled to the NMW.

VerySadCase · 31/07/2024 23:13

Nothing to do with class but it probably has a lot to do with education. More educated people are less likely to be racist.

Acapulco12 · 31/07/2024 23:14

Immigration can be a huge help to the economy by boosting the birth rate and the number of people in work. It can also create challenges - e.g. problems with integration. It is the job of the government to resolve that.

Also, the fact that immigrants are working in jobs in the U.K. does not mean that British-born people are losing out on those jobs. It does not take those jobs away from British people.

British people are feeling ‘left behind’ and suffering because of political choices and decisions made by their own governments - not because of the actions of immigrants to the U.K.

No it doesn’t. NLW or NMW is paid to everyone, wherever they’re from.

Or maybe less educated people are more negatively affected by immigration?

Why is it racist to suggest that mass immigration shafts the working class?

Because it's a myth perpetuated by racists to 'other' migrant workers and turn people against them, thus covering the tracks of the people who are really shafting the working class.

It’s not racist but it’s not correct. Immigrants coming to the U.K. to work do not take jobs way from British-born people. Nor do they make it harder for working class people.

Okay I'll bite...

50k is more than twice a carer's wage. Where would you - or we, as a society - afford to pay this?

Ditto fruit pickers, chicken slaughterers, public lavatory cleaners........ and any number of 'undesirable' occupations.

clearmoon · 31/07/2024 23:16

YABU to talk as though the "upper middle class" is a thing, and if it is all one person, even in the sense that you think it is a thing

bossybloss · 31/07/2024 23:17

I am sickened and saddened that since Mondays atrocity in Southport the bigots have come out of the woodwork… oh yes very subtle and cleverly trying not to be overtly racist but it’s there all the same…the “I am not racist but ..”brigade.

VerySadCase · 31/07/2024 23:18

EnchantedElf · 31/07/2024 23:15

Less educated people are more likely to think that they are being negatively affected by immigration when they are actually being negatively affected by a whole range of government policies.

It seems that the large Reform vote has unzipped a whole load of racist gobs in the last few weeks.

YourOpinionIsWrong · 31/07/2024 23:19

It’s not entirely someone’s fault if they didn’t get a decent education and are vulnerable to manipulation on X and Telegram. It’s complicated isn’t it?

Who is really shafting the working class, then?. The upper middle class.

Also, I don't know about the rest of the country but around here the nursery sector has really struggled to recruit since Brexit. There aren't enough people who want to work in a nursery. The nursery we used until recently has had to restrict the number of places they can offer and another local preschool has closed. I imagine it's not the only sector struggling to find staff. There are jobs there in places for the taking and not enough U.K. workers to fill them

Absolutely, but immigration has been one of those government policies, so it’s easy for that to be blamed. I’m not saying it’s right.
