I just don't use it in cooking (use many other spices and herbs though).
I threw out a quite dusty packet 10years out of date recently.

relative is visiting and has offered to cook and asked for the pepper.

aibu not to buy any?

what are the bets that my relative will buy us a pepper shaker?

What's the actual point of posts like this? You don't want to buy pepper, you're not willing to accommodate your relative and never were or even open to the idea of buying it. Attention? Do you think it makes you look better to not use pepper? Absolutely fucking pointless.

quietdays · 31/07/2024 19:13

My ds came home from backpacking in Australia with his friends, and they are raving about chicken salt..

Oblomov24 · 31/07/2024 19:14

Big fan of pepper here. Have a lot, on most things.

SwingTheMonkey · 31/07/2024 19:15

There are a fair few posts like this recently…

Aibu?

Yes you are.

No, I’m not!

Honestly, op, your attitude is weird. Buy the pepper and give it to your guest when they leave. If you’re pissed off with your guests, don’t have them to stay in the future.

Shan5474 · 31/07/2024 19:15

Just buy a pepper grinder and send it home with the relative or give it to a friend who uses pepper. It’s barely any money to avoid an argument, especially if they’re cooking their own meal. Choose a bigger hill to die on

That’s what I thought but after the updates i suspect she is on the verge of a breakdown after visitors. This is probably the camel and the straw.. 😅

if I buy some now ift will only gather dust until I have the next clear out.

You could buy it and give it to the relative to take home.

GameOfJones · 31/07/2024 19:19

If you have guests to stay, I would have pepper in the house....even if it were just a little shaker one for approx 50p. Lots and lots of people like pepper on their food.

I don't drink tea or use sugar, but I have some teabags and sugar in the cupboard for when a guest may want some. It's no different.

borntobequiet · 31/07/2024 19:21

Freshly ground black pepper enhances many savoury dishes, particularly Mediterranean ones. Some people like it on strawberries. It’s cheap and keeps for ages.
White pepper is great in mashed potatoes.

blueshoes · 31/07/2024 19:22

Inspired to going back to using white pepper.

OP - You need to ask mumsnet to move this thread to ‘attention seeking’ section of the site

😆

BluebirdBoogie · 31/07/2024 19:24

Here's a compromise for you. Next time you go to a cafe, bring home a couple of sachets of black pepper.

Can't believe you don't use it though.

Rewis · 31/07/2024 19:26

I don't use pepper either. I have one pepper mix in the cupboard and it gets only used when bf cooks

Zanatdy · 31/07/2024 19:27

I use my black pepper grinder most days in cooking. I guess if they are cooking it’s not going to taste the same without salt & pepper, given it’s cheap to buy just buy some and send it home with them

Takoneko · 31/07/2024 19:27

Turophilic · 31/07/2024 18:57

White pepper is black pepper with the rich aromatic outer layer removed by soaking rather than left in and dried to go black. It just adds heat, no other flavour.

I don’t care if it stops my béchamel or mash being nice and white, black pepper is marvellous. I love the smell of it.

Pasta with black pepper and cheese, cream of tomato soup - heck, any creamy soup, eggs of any kind, most sauces, spuds… black pepper is queen.

As for cooking without garlic or onions - those are offensive to Lord Krishna, the nice singing bunch with tambourines told me as they pressed a free vegan cookbook into my hand.

I knew in that moment that becoming a Hare Krishna was not for me. 😉

Not exactly. Black peppercorns are made from unripe berries, white pepper is made from ripe berries that are soaked and slightly fermented.

yeesh · 31/07/2024 17:48

Black pepper goes in everything surely? I don’t know anyone that wouldn’t have it

We have a pepper grinder we got for a wedding present - it hasn't ever been used and we got married 14 years ago. We never use pepper, there are far more interesting spices out there!

PyongyangKipperbang · 31/07/2024 19:31

A relative of mine was gobsmacked and disgusted when she found out that we neve rhave sugar in the house. Dont use it unless baking which isnt often these days, so I dont buy it. "But what if someone wants sugar in their tea?!" I said that that wouldnt be a problem really as I dont keep tea in either.

Bloody hell, you would have thought I had told them that my hobby is skewering kittens. They were baffled at the though t that someone could live without tea in the house, in case someone wanted a cup of tea. I asked them if they agreed then that they should have a proper coffee machine in their house as thats all I drink and they said that "instant is fine though", not to me it isnt, so I would be on water if I was in their house. Again, baffled that I wouldnt just drink the tea or crappy coffee on offer!

Some people are weird and think that the way they do things is the way everyone would do things. Dont buy the pepper, what a waste of money!

Well, you can use pepper as well as other interesting spices, don’t you think? If I make a decent carbonara only fresh black pepper would be interesting to me.

Choochoo21 · 31/07/2024 19:32

If someone was offering to cook for me then I wouldn’t think twice about buying a 50p pot of pepper.

Do you not put pepper in mash?

I don’t use pepper that often but I always use it in mash and cracked black pepper on scrambled eggs.

DoIWantTo · 31/07/2024 19:32

If you don’t use pepper there’s no point you buying it, don’t see what the big deal is? I rarely add pepper to my food, use plenty of better herbs and spices available.

DoIWantTo · 31/07/2024 19:33

Also don’t understand the density of people asking “do you not use pepper in this? I always use pepper in this!” OP stated quite clearly they didn’t use pepper at all.

I think its quite unusual not to have black pepper and a grinder but I don't think anyone has used white pepper since 1988

I do

I use it on eggs

RampantIvy · 31/07/2024 19:34

Differentstarts · 31/07/2024 19:02

Or you could see it from the otherside and think why do I need to add so much stuff to my food to make it taste good. If everything is covered in pepper surely your just tasting pepper and not the actual food

Or you could see it from the point of view that Indian food tastes wonderful, chicken fajitas ars delicious, a fragrant Thai curry tingles the taste buds and a pizza always benefits from a sprinkling of oregano.

Herbs and spices don't or shouldn't mask the taste of food, but should enhance dishes.

Surely you must understand that?

Have you never eaten anything other than bland plain cooked food?

What do you mean by better herbs? Surely that's down to individual preference ?

TBH OP, I'm not sure why you posted?

MeowCatPleaseMeowBack · 31/07/2024 19:35

I'm always bemused by these threads where swathes of posters can't understand that not everybody likes the same thing. How lacking in imagination do you need to be to not comprehend that not everybody likes a strong taste like pepper?
