bluecomputerscreen · 31/07/2024 17:45

I just don't use it in cooking (use many other spices and herbs though).
I threw out a quite dusty packet 10years out of date recently.

relative is visiting and has offered to cook and asked for the pepper.

aibu not to buy any?

what are the bets that my relative will buy us a pepper shaker?

It's a little bit weird to have such strong feelings about buying a bit of pepper which costs around £1 for someone who will cook for you.

Just give it to them after their stay and they can take it away.

The flavour comes from the ( packet )sauces though, such as rahmsoße, so seasoning the actual food isn't necessary. In my kitchen anyway.

But the packets with rahmsoße contain a lot of junk, preservatives, additives and flavour enhancers. It’s not exactly difficult to cook yourself, using fresh ingredients and spices.

But there are some sauces that I actually prefer the taste of packet sauce!

If I was cooking for someone who never ate pepper I wouldn't use it.

And you are a sensible person, one who doesn't force people to eat what they don't like. My hat is off to you.

I am not trying to forbid anyone to have pepper on or in their own food; I just want them to refrain from putting it on or in mine if they are cooking for me. It doesn't seem a huge amount to ask of them.

things I use to 'spice up' meals

  • paprika
  • chilli
  • fresh crushed garlic
  • ground ginger
  • cardamon
  • mustard
  • rocket

Yet you care enough about pepper to ask for support on MN? Maybe you can start a gofundme.

I think its quite unusual not to have black pepper and a grinder but I don't think anyone has used white pepper since 1988

White pepper is so underrated.

If we have guests I always try to meet their dietary preferences and needs. It isn't difficult. We don't live near family, and have scattered friends, so when people visit it would be for at least an overnight stay so, feeding other people is a regular occurrence in our house.

mondaytosunday · 01/08/2024 15:49

Love pepper! I have it on my eggs every morning - it's the only herb (spice?) I use with that and smoked salmon.
I have a very well stocked spice cupboard and discover new ones all the time. But pepper is a basic, like salt.
My most frequently used are:
Pepper
Salt
Smoked paprika
Hot paprika
Next are:
Italian with garlic
Chinese five spice
Fajita seasoning

Even if I didn't like it I'd have pepper on hand in case a guest requested some it's so common.

I don't see why the OP should buy an ingredient that she never uses just because someone else is cooking. I don't use salt in anything and haven't bought any in more years than I can remember. I don't think I've got any sugar either. I wouldn't buy salt and sugar just because someone else was cooking for me.

To me that sounds churlish.

GinAndBeerIt · 31/07/2024 18:45

I think I'm the only woman in the world who doesn't have any herbs and spices in the cupboards.
I do have salt and black pepper somewhere in them though.

Do you cook from scratch ever? Genuine question because those are basic ingredients for many recipes.

I love a sprinkle of white pepper on various foods e.g. eggs and tomatoes. My father always used it, so I was raised on it!

RampantIvy · 01/08/2024 19:17

This thread is making me want some white pepper. I remember seeing a Hairy Bikers episode when the late Dave Myers said that white pepper was brilliant in mashed potatoes.

Does anyone think that the posters who never use any salt or sugar come across as a little morally superior?

I don't take sugar in hot drinks but I always have some in the house for visitors who do.

Most people like salt on their chips and I think it is poor hosting if you can't provide it for your guests.

I agree. Definitely a sense of superiority. So they eat tasteless food (no salt, which is a flavour enhancer and vital to life) or stick sauces on it out of a packet, presumably.
Sugar I keep for guests - and strawberries, rhubar/apple/blackberries in a crumble etc. and (various) sugars for cake making.

I started using it again in the last couple of years and it is! Also love it on cheese on toast
It sits here now with my daily used herbs and spices

@user8464987632 white pepper for veg, some soups and mash.

AnnieSnap · 01/08/2024 19:35

@bluecomputerscreen why have you asked if you are being unreasonable and proceeded to say repeatedly say “well I won’t be buying any because I don’t like it”? Just a pointless, attention seeking post 🤷‍♀️

No, it’s for posters who are prepared to consider that they might be. It’s pointless when someone has made up their mind that they are not being unreasonable. Why bother asking the question?

Ilovecleaning · 01/08/2024 20:02

Another of those bloody stupid posts.

RampantIvy · 01/08/2024 20:09

@bluecomputerscreen if you don't like pepper then just tell your friend. Unless it is steak au poivre or cacio e pepe pepper isn't usually an integral part of the recipe anyway.

I cook the same way, and I don’t really like pepper. I do have it for guests though because my father loves it.

Just pop into MaccyDs or similar and grab a small sachet or two.

White pepper goes well in home made egg fried rice
