Controlling for being angry at DH using oven

SharpOliveHam · 30/07/2024 13:32

Dh likes to eat healthily which means he never fries any food. Even the 1 cal spray is not acceptable. Fine.

But DH knows I’m very funny about the heat. Hate it and do very well to keep a cool house. I’m the person who goes around closing curtains, opening windows at the optimal time to keep things cool.

Just got off a work call to a sauna downstairs. DH has made himself a fry up (chicken sausages, egg, mushrooms, tomatoes). The kitchen is reading 26c - it was 22.5c when I looked at around 12 pm.

I told dh that this was really selfish behaviour. And now I’ve been called controlling.

AIBU?

Maybe an extra hot vindaloo with a nice big steaming mug of tea.

Hot food originated in very hot countries, if you increase your inner temperature with hot, spicy food then your body loses heat and cools down. If your inner temperature is cool then it takes in heat from the surroundings. It's all about balancing the two temperatures.
Tea is very cooling in Summer.

It’s far too hot too open the windows if it’s 22C indoors, windows open only work when it’s cooler outside than inside.

If it’s 28C outdoors and now 26C indoors due to oven being on there is nothing anyone can do now, house is stuck at that temperature until it cools overnight. Fans just blow air around and opening windows will make it worse.

Using the oven during the middle of the day when it’s forecast to be 30C outside is unacceptable. Trying to keep a house cool
for self and pets is not controlling - it’s sensible!

My blinds windows and blackout curtains get shut when the outside temp gets hotter than inside. My lift hatch is open I't definitely keeps it cooler.
Fans work in the same wage wind chill does breeze lowers temp.
I still cook

I agree - this is the real mystery to the story.

I do a fry up in the air fryer, except a fried egg when the pan makes a short appearance.

New2024newname · 30/07/2024 17:56

I’m with you OP. I think a lot of people posting have no idea what it’s like to live in a house/flat which gets hot and is impossible to cool down. On days like this I have to be obsessed with keeping windows and blinds closed, and working out when to open the windows to cool everything down (often not til 9/10pm). I chose not to bake bread this week because it would mean having the oven on super high for 40 mins, and that heat is just going to sit inside the flat all day. I’d be pretty upset if my husband decided to bake some sausages when there are lots of other food options available (and you can fry sausages anyway!!)

@ThisBlueCrab sadly there's a few on here today. See also "I told my boyfriend to bin everything from the fridge, he double checked that he was supposed to do that, I confirmed and he did it. Now I'm upset he binned everything from the fridge".

I think it's a combination of school holidays and the heat.

Nomdejeur · 30/07/2024 17:56

How do you think dogs cope in countries where it’s a lot hotter, for longer! If your dogs aren’t using the cooking mat, I’d say they have decided they are perfectly cool enough.

Fiery30 · 30/07/2024 17:56

Your behaviour and attitudes are very bizarre and toxic. So your husband is never allowed to cook and eat hot food when the temperature increases? You are unhealthily obsessed with keeping the house cool- why? If you want to remain cool, use a hand held fan or keep a wet towel on your legs or go work somewhere else where they tolerate your whims.

Eats healthily?????

Whaleandsnail6 · 30/07/2024 18:12

You are being very unreasonable and controlling. You're basically saying your husband cannot eat food that he fancies in his own home.

If we had a hot summer for weeks, does that mean that you would expect noone in the house to have hot food cooked in the oven until autumn?!

Why not just shut the dogs out of the kitchen until it has cooled down in there? Although I'm sure they dont need all of the ice towels and paddling pools, I think you are a bit ott.

I can't believe you actually cant see that your reaction to your husband cooking himself a meal is completely bonkers.

Scirocco · 30/07/2024 18:12

The man made food in his own house. YABU.

And stop throwing frozen towels at dogs. That's just unnecessary. Get a fan or air con.

SwordToFlamethrower · 30/07/2024 18:15

Quick google:

"Double-coated dogs have an undercoat of hair that insulates their bodies and helps keep them cool in hot weather. In the summer, dogs with double coats will shed some of their undercoat, but the remaining layer traps cool air next to their skin. Brushing your dog regularly can help remove the undercoat and allow air to circulate, which is another natural cooling mechanism. However, you should avoid shaving or cutting your dog's hair, as this can interfere with their ability to stay cool. "

ZiriForGood · 30/07/2024 18:17

YANBU.
There is a shared home of you, your husband and your dogs.

If the layout is an open plan and the kitchen doubles up as the main living space, it is stupid to artificially heat it by running an oven for the sake of frozen sausages of all things.

Left · 30/07/2024 18:17

In the minority but I agree with you OP, I wfh in my kitchen diner so would not want the oven on… But at least it’s an electric one and would cool down quickly after, the old style ranges keep warm for ages 😩

Garlickest · 30/07/2024 18:17

YAB excruciatingly U. And for god's sake buy him an air fryer!

somanynamesbynow · 30/07/2024 18:18

So many people saying 'his own house'. It's not 'his' house. It's their house.

I just wouldn't do it if I were sharing with others, and I would be very surprised if DP were to do it while I'm in and complaining about being warm. It's just consideration and community-mindedness. He could go to a greasy spoon if he were really desperate.

Kippersbigfeet · 30/07/2024 18:20

If you have double coated dogs then you just need to be grooming them properly so that the undercoat is not compacted. They can then regulate their own heat and won't need frozen towels. Comb them right down to the skin so that all loose hair is removed.

Oldermum84 · 30/07/2024 18:24

I'm with you op. My DH understands we don't use the oven in this heat. Our baby's room is 28 degrees anyway, don't want it any hotter.

Oldermum84 · 30/07/2024 18:27

Oh and rather than you being controlling he is being disrespectful and unthoughtful.

OkapiSandwichAndARoastEgg · 30/07/2024 18:27

If things go so horribly downhill just as a result of a few degrees change in temperature, you need to change things urgently OP.

Pretty sure she just means a range size cooker. I have one and it cools down just as quickly as every other cooker. I don't think she means an aga type as that stays on all the time and would be a nightmare in summer.

An oven in your child's room, what a novelty!!
