Controlling for being angry at DH using oven

SharpOliveHam · 30/07/2024 13:32

Dh likes to eat healthily which means he never fries any food. Even the 1 cal spray is not acceptable. Fine.

But DH knows I’m very funny about the heat. Hate it and do very well to keep a cool house. I’m the person who goes around closing curtains, opening windows at the optimal time to keep things cool.

Just got off a work call to a sauna downstairs. DH has made himself a fry up (chicken sausages, egg, mushrooms, tomatoes). The kitchen is reading 26c - it was 22.5c when I looked at around 12 pm.

I told dh that this was really selfish behaviour. And now I’ve been called controlling.

AIBU?

YABU because you are controlling, just like your dh said you were.

I don't know why you are so aware of the temperature fluctuations in your house or so worried about your dogs - if left alone they will take care of themselves and find a spot that is an acceptable temperature for them.

It is as if you are prioritising your dogs' comfort over your dh's comfort and it's completely unnecessary.

Can’t get over how mad this thread is

Hobbesmanc · 30/07/2024 16:37

People do go a bit bonkers in the UK when the thermometer creeps towards the high twenties. Dogs with access to shade and water will cope without a fuss. Just don't walk them.

I've done a full English in the oven apart from the eggs. How do you bake them without any oil or butter?

Anyway surely people still cook in warm weather. Even if it's just hard boiling eggs for salad or poaching fish or chicken?

SharpOliveHam · 30/07/2024 13:35

Im doing everything in my power to keep the house cool. Not only for me but for dogs and he has just undone everything

By cooking himself some food?? Don't be ridiculous! It's not that bloody hot!!

Cantbelievethatimafoolagain · 30/07/2024 16:39

I sympathise, it's very hard keeping a dog cool in this weather. It's currently 31 degrees in my part of the uk. My dog wants to lay outside in the sun on the hot concrete floor. I have to keep a watchful eye. My dog is also short haired and he still struggles a lot in the heat. Doesn't like the cooling mat/cooling vest.

Justjn1 · 30/07/2024 16:39

I don't even understand the purpose of the post as you're clearly unwilling to accept on any level any of the feedback regarding the fact that you're being totally unreasonable. 🤦🏻‍♀️

Water, keep them in the shade. The dogs will be fine. And if the kitchen is now the hottest room in the house, how about moving the dogs into another room.

Your poor husband. I hope he got to enjoy his fry up in peace before you reappeared downstairs.

BluebellsareBlue · 30/07/2024 16:45

I sincerely hope you aren't putting wet towels on your dog OP.

Having had GSD my entire life I understand about double coated dogs. If you are going to use a cool mat or cold towel (not wet) then you should focus on the belly, underarms and paws.

But I do think your massively overreacting, even when in Africa our GSDs would find a cool spot in or out the house to cool down.

Make sure they are well hydrated, get a fan or keep their coats damp with a misting water spray

SharpOliveHam · 30/07/2024 15:16

More surface area was my only point

If this is such an issue for you, buy a new standalone oven that sucks the heat back in and is cold to the touch. My ovens, you can touch the glass when they are on and you will not get burnt. They also suck the hot air back in when you open the door. You need a more efficient oven, then you can give your poor husband a break when he needs to use it.

I also say this as someone who struggles with the heat. I voted YABU as your reaction to your DH cooking in his own home is OTT.

Counting how many times you've said RANGE cooker.

Your poor old man. All he wanted was a chicken sausage....😂

😂

CharlotteLucas3 · 30/07/2024 16:48

I said you weren’t being unreasonable OP. It’s funny how things go on here….I wonder if these are the same people who are horrified at dogs being walked when the outside temperature is over 20C?

There are a lot of people who go around opening and closing windows to keep their homes cool. They’re just not on this thread.

Also, no I’m sure the dogs don’t like having cold towels thrown over them. Mine don’t like having water tipped over them at the time, but it cools them down. They just don’t understand that it will cool them down because they’re dogs!

Alpolonia · 30/07/2024 16:49

I’m with you OP!

HamSad · 30/07/2024 16:50

YABU.

bravotango · 30/07/2024 16:50

You sound very controlling and a bit mad, tbh. 99% of responses say YABU and you're going on and on!

CharlotteLucas3 · 30/07/2024 16:51

Disclaimer before someone starts….no I know that dogs shouldn’t be hosed down when they’re on the verge of heatstroke.

I know. I have nothing to add, it's been said, but I can't help but to come back and catch up!

CharlotteLucas3 · 30/07/2024 16:52

Why’s it mad? It’s perfectly sensible not to use an oven in this heat.

HoppingPavlova · 30/07/2024 16:53

So, so many questions.

My poor dogs have thick, long coats that cannot be shaved. Double coated

That should mean that their coats act as both insulation against the heat and the cold😊. I live in a hot country and we don’t shave dogs with double coats in hot weather (as many do with other dogs here in summer) given it provides them natural insulation against the heat.

The kitchen is reading 26c

Okay. Thats not really hot. Certainly not as hot as you are making out. That’s ‘pleasant’, we wouldn’t even consider our air con or any steps under 28ish, and then it would depend on associated airflow and humidity at that point. A dry heat of 28 you wouldn’t blink an eye or consider doing anything and particularly if air flow is active, but over 28 with humidity and still air you would start and consider turning the air con or a fan on.

Frankly, your poor DH, it’s extremely odd and controlling behaviour you are displaying. I won’t use the BS word.

Begsthequestion · 30/07/2024 15:31

Interesting that your dogs have higher priority in the house than your own husband. He was just making something to eat.

As it should be.

But the husband has done nothing wrong.

KeirSpoutsTwaddle · 30/07/2024 16:53

I’m quite surprised so few people think there’s an issue with pumping extra heat out on one of the hottest days of the year.

Yellowpingu · 30/07/2024 16:54

If you have a loft hatch, open it. We have rooms in our attic and on hot days we open the doors into the loft space.

SharpOliveHam · 30/07/2024 13:39

I had a ham sad for lunch precisely so I didn’t heat up house.

Im the one running around throwing frozen cold towels on dogs.

It's not hot!!

Elderflower14 · 30/07/2024 16:56

Your poor husband!!

NewGreenDuck · 30/07/2024 16:57

Are people really saying that if we had a summer that lasted from. May to October then no one would use the oven? For all that time?
P. S my son is having prawn vindaloo tonight. He's going to be hot.

The kitchen is now 26c according to hive. I checked at around 12 pm and it was nowhere near that.

I just went and touched range and it is scolding to the touch still. The kitchen was lovely and cool for the dogs and now it is the hottest room in the house.

The hottest part of a hot day is around 3pm. So your kitchen will be hotter at 3 than at noon generally on a hot day. That's nothing to do with a non fry up in an oven.

If your oven is giving out so much heat maybe the seal is broken and you need to fix it.
