Controlling for being angry at DH using oven

SharpOliveHam · 30/07/2024 13:32

Dh likes to eat healthily which means he never fries any food. Even the 1 cal spray is not acceptable. Fine.

But DH knows I’m very funny about the heat. Hate it and do very well to keep a cool house. I’m the person who goes around closing curtains, opening windows at the optimal time to keep things cool.

Just got off a work call to a sauna downstairs. DH has made himself a fry up (chicken sausages, egg, mushrooms, tomatoes). The kitchen is reading 26c - it was 22.5c when I looked at around 12 pm.

I told dh that this was really selfish behaviour. And now I’ve been called controlling.

AIBU?

I’m not telling him he can’t use it but I’m calling him out on being selfish. His meal has impacted the entire household.

Is this a wind up?😶

AbsolutelyBarking · 30/07/2024 15:34

It is good that you care about your dogs OP but you are going over the top in your worries.

It sounds as if you are feeling the heat more than other people and more than dogs. This is leading YOU to be selfish even as you mean to be caring.

(A comic -irritating- character in one of Jane Austen's novels always thinks that everyone around him feel things just as he does and he endlessly protects them from things they enjoy.)

Double-coated dogs can be comfortable in English summer heat - or even hotter. (One I know recently moved to Greece and is happily moving between heat and tiled floors during the hot days ... at around 40 degrees.)

You probably don't want to walk them or get them racing about or encourage them to sunbathe.. but they are built to survive in a world without frozen towels. They are not in danger.

You can allow your DP to be happy too. His wants and needs matter.
(Buy him a 'Ramoska' -a pansize version of an oven from Eastern Europe- to use instead of an oven on hot days.)

Bumblebeestiltskin · 30/07/2024 15:34

YABU and insane.

ElaineMBenes · 30/07/2024 15:34

Yes, you are being controlling.

and very odd about a normal summers day.

Ginmonkeyagain · 30/07/2024 15:34

Ummm aren't ovens designed to keep heat in?

YABU. It's not that hot. The guys on the building site next door are happily still working away.

thesoundofsummer · 30/07/2024 15:35

You've asked if you are being unreasonable and have been told multiple times you are, yet you won't accept it.
I've got two double coated spaniels, I'm heavily pregnant and I've just baked a cake. We are coping just fine. You need to get a grip.

RedOnyx · 30/07/2024 15:36

It's 34°C where I am (not UK), "real feel" is higher, and last night I had the oven on to cook part of tea. We have an open plan kitchen/dining room/living room so cooking anything actually does affect half the flat. My partner's sole reaction to me using the oven was to thank me for dinner!

Grammarnut · 30/07/2024 15:37

I thought he did not fry food. Air fryer? And yes, it is a bit controlling.

mm81736 · 30/07/2024 15:38

SharpOliveHam · 30/07/2024 13:39

I had a ham sad for lunch precisely so I didn’t heat up house.

Im the one running around throwing frozen cold towels on dogs.

Ham sad? Freudian slip!

Daisy277 · 30/07/2024 15:38

Yes you’re being unreasonable. Your poor DP, maybe all your red flags flapping in the wind will cool the place down. You need to get the fuck over yourself and realise what a cunt you are being

Grammarnut · 30/07/2024 15:38

SharpOliveHam · 30/07/2024 13:35

Im doing everything in my power to keep the house cool. Not only for me but for dogs and he has just undone everything

Open a window and put a spray hose on in the garden for the dogs. Using the oven - or the cooker - is not a crime and you are being very controlling all round. Buy a fan, several fans and use them. I hate curtains drawn in the day to keep out the sun.

DiscontentedPig · 30/07/2024 15:39

I can't imagine making a fry-up just for myself whilst my wife was on a work call.

Notinmylifethyme · 30/07/2024 15:39

Leave him

He deserves better.

loropianalover · 30/07/2024 15:41

DiscontentedPig · 30/07/2024 15:39

I can't imagine making a fry-up just for myself whilst my wife was on a work call.

Why? 🤔

Besides, OP had her cool and appropriate ham salad.

ArabellaFishwife · 30/07/2024 15:42

If he'd gone off leaving the oven on, that would be something to complain about. Cooking food in your own house is not a crime.
I obsess about keeping my house cool, too. On hot days I'm forever going into rooms and fussing with curtains and windows that DH can't seem to accept will let the heat in from outside. But I draw the line at banning cooked food.

januaryjan · 30/07/2024 15:42

ApolloandDaphne · 30/07/2024 13:44

He hasn't used the oven though has he? He used the hob I imagine for a fry up?

Or a couple of Hot Dogs?

ElliesNextNameChange · 30/07/2024 15:43

OPs dogs are probably hot from running away from her and her towels 😂

Milkand2sugarsplease · 30/07/2024 15:44

The very purpose of a double coat is to help them keep cool in heat as well as warm in the cold.

YABU to call him selfish for cooking himself a meal!!!

Taluulaah · 30/07/2024 15:44

I think you were being a bit unreasonable about the oven situation, tho I do get the frustration, however all these snarky little comments on this thread concerning your routines, keeping the dogs safe and cool, and the “cruelty” of having double coated dogs is just ridiculous. I’m sorry that a genuine AIBU question has made you a target for the nastiness some people can’t seem to wait to unleash. 🙄 This site is wild sometimes!

Hope you and your doggos can remain cool 😎 (and cool-headed! Let the oven incident and the negativity here jus wash over you! 😊)

Sparrowball · 30/07/2024 15:44

I'd love to know what happens in winter if the poor husband is cold. Probably has to walk around dressed like an Artic explorer because his unhinged wife doesn't want the heating on and is terrified the dogs will spontaneously combust.

He must have an awful life.

HowardTJMoon · 30/07/2024 15:45

Anyone watch Black Books? I'm getting shades of Dave Syndrome here.

JasonTindallsTan · 30/07/2024 15:46

Aye you’re absolutely bonkers OP. Poor DH.

It’s not even that hot.

Despair1 · 30/07/2024 15:46

loropianalover · 30/07/2024 13:35

The kitchen is there to be used and he is entitled to make a fry for himself in his own home. 26C is hardly a sauna.

I also love a cool house and despise the heat from the cooker but it doesn’t mean nobody can use it, that’s unreasonable. You do sound controlling.

This

Jl2014 · 30/07/2024 15:46

Maybe the problem is your oven. That would be quite a lot to heat up a room by. Mine doesn’t have anywhere near that impact. Energy inefficient, no?

IMustDoMoreExercise · 30/07/2024 15:48

If my husband know how obsessive I was about heat, he would check with me before using the cooker on such a hot day and try to find something else to eat.
