To have allowed my dc watch the Olympic opening ceremony?

I was shocked at the library scene leading to a threesome.

The mocking of Christians in the last supper scene.

The feminization of males & the sheer number of transvestites on parade. And a child thrown in the midst of them.

This is a sporting event, why the need to have it so highly sexulaised? My dc were thankfully howling with laughter at parts "the smurf man" singing (complete with his painted bulge) had us all in stitches.

I feel there was a social conditioning agenda to the opening ceremony & it was completely inappropriate given that it is for family viewing. Sexulaised behaviour should not be displayed to children.

It was very French. At least the Can Can dancers were wearing underwear and everyone kept their breasts in. France, and particularly Paris, has always been very openly sexual (and those of you talking about the threesome in the library - I think you mean the “ménage a trois”: again, very French!)

It was bonkers and a bit dull, but not at all culturally out of line with what you’d expect from Paris.

Not my cup of tea, but I didn't find it outrageous or shocking, just interminably dull.

It was about as avant guarde as eurotrash circa 2001.

Eurotrash did it's level best to be "shocking" at the time .

Loved Antoine De Caunes, so droll.

missing the point

Western society is self-destructing. Without laws on decency, humans descend into depravity. There have always been variations in sexuality and it is much healthier to accept that. However the current obsession with gender is very unhealthy and to use it as part of a sporting event is wholly inappropriate. It was tasteless and demeaning.

Western society is self-destructing.

The rise of Islam across the West should kick all this nonsense into touch. Not sure what theme Olympic ceremonies will take in 20 years, but I doubt transvestites, trans-people or threesomes will feature heavily.

SnapdragonToadflax · 27/07/2024 07:29

It was very, very French. They're known for being sexy, outspoken and anti-religion, so none of that surprised me. I did think the threesome was a bit unnecessary as it was so early, but it went over my five year old's head and I imagine he'd have to be quite a lot older before he'd pay attention and question it.

I liked it, overall. They were unlucky with the weather and the river bits went on too long, but it was a spectacle which is what is intended. Loved the horse. Don't care about drag queens/trans people dancing in a club scene, even though I'm very much gender critical - it's what I would expect from anything like this, and it does no harm. Men have dressed in women's clothes forever, people can dress how they want. (My objection would be to men competing against women for an advantage, which is not happening at the Olympics. Thank goodness.)

Overall it was a bit odd but fun to watch, especially towards the end. I do worry about that hot air balloon though, how do they protect it against drones?

TheWelshposter · 27/07/2024 07:31

The Last Supper scene.... surely it's just a mock up of a famous painting? I've seen many funny copies of it for sale and mock-ups of it on TV before. Blasphemous to Leonardo da Vinci maybe?

Apart from that, it sounds like I didn't miss much by not watching it the ceremony. Good to read everyone's descriptions.

Coastalcreeksider · 27/07/2024 07:34

I missed a fair bit of this before I started watching but I couldn't really say that I enjoyed it very much. The horse up the Seine went on a bit too lon and although I am not a fan of Celine Dion, from what I did see of the ceremony, I think she was the best bit of it. I loved her silver dress too.

For me, they certainly didn't get anywhere near topping the 2012 opening ceremony in London.

Ginmonkeyagain · 27/07/2024 07:35

Blue salad man was meant to be Dionysus, god of wine and festivity I think.

TransvestitesOnParade · 27/07/2024 07:40

Thanks for the new username OP Wink

LilacAlien · 27/07/2024 07:40

Is there a summary video of the dodgy bits?
(Just asking for a friend)

Ginmonkeyagain · 27/07/2024 07:42

My main concern was someone was going to go arse over tit in those rain soaked catwalks.

Bunnycat101 · 27/07/2024 07:43

I sent my 8yo up to bed once the catwalk bit started becoming more prominent but she was also getting bored by the boats by that point. I thought there were bits that were a bit dodge for family viewing (ie all the men in drag gyrating with a child on stage). It was quite zany and entertaining in places (especially when Papa Smurf turned up) but I don’t feel like my child needed to see it.

Dinosweetpea · 27/07/2024 07:44

I agree OP, we laughed a lot of it off as it bordered on ridiculous but my 9 year old specifically asked me about the threesome scene which was completely unnecessary.

Purplecatshopaholic · 27/07/2024 07:44

Blimey, I’m sorry I missed now, lol

timenowplease · 27/07/2024 07:45

Malahide · 27/07/2024 04:48

Transvestites? You really think that is acceptable language?

Homophobia isn’t a good look OP.

Men dressed in women's clothes is nothing to do with being homosexual.

Ginmonkeyagain · 27/07/2024 07:46

For anyone confused there is someone on R4 now explaining aspects of the ceremony.

AnImaginaryCat · 27/07/2024 07:47

What did I miss!!? A threesome in a library, mocking religions and overtly sexual themes!!

Not to come over all traditonal but to coin a phrase "Sounds very French."
Mind you there's a good bit of keeping to the traditional with the horror and disapproval at anything sexual being very British.

I only saw the opening ceremony from a mechanical horse (looking ghost like) going down the Seine for what seemed like a very long time. The a very tall person (looking fantasy fiction like) on an actual horse who then walked down a very long stage for a long time. The a boat going back down the Seine with the torch for a very long time followed by a long run with the torch, all whilst there was a very long light show. Then a burning hot air balloon, and Celine Dion on top of the Eiffel tower (who for some reason I had thought had died recently.)

Overall the bit I saw was OK all but it a bit drawn out. (They'd have needed to condense Paris to change that.) No threesomes, no last supper in drag with a sexy smurf under a closhe and who know what else now.

Tel12 · 27/07/2024 07:47

I gave up quite early on, it was tedious in the extreme.

Willmafrockfit · 27/07/2024 07:48

minions are french

StMarieforme · 27/07/2024 07:48

I'm a tad more concerned about a convicted paedophile being allowed to take part, whilst a horse abuser is not. How must that victim feel? More important things to worry about than a ceremony tbh.

Willmafrockfit · 27/07/2024 07:48

i think i have caught a chill, simply from watching all that rain!

StMarieforme · 27/07/2024 07:49

Blueskies3 · 27/07/2024 03:49

I absolutely agree, OP. And there are better platforms to address these agendas anyway. Like Eurovision etc not a sporting ceremony, which is about athletes coming together. I always thought it was for families to watch it. I’m really over the pushing of sexualisation down our children’s throats. They didn’t have to include the child, the threesome…

Didn't realise it was a kids' show. Perhaps the organisers didn't either? 🤷🏻‍♀️

Combattingthemoaners · 27/07/2024 07:50

Do you mean drag queens? 😂

AnImaginaryCat · 27/07/2024 07:54

I don't think they are. They have just been to France.

Boredlass · 27/07/2024 07:55

I didn’t watch it but going by the comments, I wish I did
