To have allowed my dc watch the Olympic opening ceremony?

I was shocked at the library scene leading to a threesome.

The mocking of Christians in the last supper scene.

The feminization of males & the sheer number of transvestites on parade. And a child thrown in the midst of them.

This is a sporting event, why the need to have it so highly sexulaised? My dc were thankfully howling with laughter at parts "the smurf man" singing (complete with his painted bulge) had us all in stitches.

I feel there was a social conditioning agenda to the opening ceremony & it was completely inappropriate given that it is for family viewing. Sexulaised behaviour should not be displayed to children.

Whilst you can normally expect things after 9pm not always to be suitable for children, the Olympic Ceremony should be one anyone can see without the concerns you validly had, OP.

Apparently, this is what the naked blue Dionysus represented.

Seeing this brought back the horror of a man painted blue - I didn't realise he was meant to be a god! - with hardly anything to disguise a bulge!

Can anyone explain the galloping silver horse?

I don't think it is usually Christians that are objecting tbh. It comes more from the right wing, little Britain traditionalist than church attendees. (Although, I will admit there is a crossover: some racists attend church too)

It's the same sort of middle class "respectable" people who the BBC uses to interview expressing they'd be horrified if a black family moves next door or such like. They just use the "poor mocked Christianity" argument to disguise and push an anti-Islam agenda

I imagine most Christians don’t like their religion to be mocked.

And the reason Islam is brought up is because there is a marked difference in how both are treated. Maybe it’s not reported on but I don’t see big protests because a play is not depicting other religions as they would like them to be. Whereas Films/plays have been pulled because they offended some Muslims often in slight unintended ways whereas you can call your film/play “Christianity is shit” and not have to fear any repercussions.

Thankfully I didn’t watch it. Am surprised the French chose to be so ‘woke’.

🥱

Shocked? Really? You need to get out more love.

The library scene was weird but it was obviously inspired by the movie “Jules and Jim” and the nouvelle vague (really famous French era of movie making in the 50s)

blackice · 27/07/2024 03:24

Pop over to the Mumsnet so-called feminism board. They'll love you there

Thanks for posting this here OP, it was a disgusting and depraved display of very obvious male arrogance - especially as women are fighting to keep women's sports free of cheating males.

Ghosttofu99 · 27/07/2024 08:33

The ceremony was a bit naff but The Last Supper is literally a painting of men in dresses (robes) with long hair so not sure you can really claim it has been made ‘femme.’

Willmafrockfit · 27/07/2024 08:33

i thought michael johnson's comments were very negative.

i also recall criticism of 2012

Blueskies3 · 27/07/2024 03:43

Why did they need a threesome in the library?

Honestly the pervert apologists will find a way to condone anything and blame others for not being down with the kids. Even though most of the drag acts were older men.

Startingagainandagain · 27/07/2024 08:35

I have not watched it and after reading this, I won't bother...

The ceremony should be something that brings people together in a fun celebration that everyone can watch.

Bringing religious satire and sexual innuendo into it is completely inappropriate in that context.

Nothing will ever top the Queen and Bond anyway as far as I am concerned!

I am half French by the way, so no French-bashing for the sake of it from me...

I would have expected the French to do something something really stylish and beautiful. Does not sound like they managed it.

Tissyous · 27/07/2024 08:35

It was awful, why everything has to push boundaries and be shocking to be deemed artistic is sad and pathetic but nothing new. There are plenty of religions people wouldn't stand for them being mocked, Christianity is fair game in popular culture though and it's about time people stood up to it. Yes there's free speech, but then this should apply across the board and not just mocking Christianity.

Mumdiva99 · 27/07/2024 08:37

I loved it. I love it more because of the discussion and controversy. I popped out to stick the dinner on and must have missed the library scene? Which building was that in? Anyone got times?
Apparently some of it was supposed to be deliberately provocative to stick 2 fingers up at the right wing movement in France - I learnt that on the MN watch along thread. And that we won't get all of it not being French. E.g. the dude painted blue is known for daft things....

AnImaginaryCat · 27/07/2024 07:54

I don't think they are. They have just been to France.

Oh right, you were informing people the Minions created in France. Then I came along all puerile and silly and referred to theMinions as if they were actual beings. Sincere apologies for not being serious.

Had the Minions featured in the thread prior to your comment? Or were you just randomly naming a thing unconnected to the Olympics that were created in France? If so, I offer the rabies vaccine.

Festivemoose · 27/07/2024 08:38

The Last Supper is one of the most parodied paintings in history. Interesting that all the others passed you by and this is the one you clutch your pearls over.

Blue Smurf Panty Bulge Guy, is that you?

Do you not remember the fuss and protests by Christians over the Jerry Springer play? There was a huge uproar and it got cancelled IIRC.

What does mocking religions have to do with the Olympics?

Appledoughnut · 27/07/2024 08:42

So were the people in the library just kissing?

GreenMeeple · 27/07/2024 08:42

Seriously? Three people kissing is inappropriate for children? (And it was not sudden, the lead up to it was obvious and took ages so parents had plenty of time to switch channel) But rows of beheaded women and a building squinting blood is absolutely fine?

I didn't mind any of it but some people need to get their priorities in order if it was the little bit of kissing that upset you.

Simonjt · 27/07/2024 08:45

Appledoughnut · 27/07/2024 08:42

So were the people in the library just kissing?

Yes, and barely at that. I do wonder how many people actually disliked it because they weren’t all white, and the men were wearing visible makeup. Their outfits were amazing, they couldn’t have been more colourful if they tried.

supersop60 · 27/07/2024 08:45

@Malahide the word transvestite literally means cross dressing. That's it.

Are you OK? The minions featured in the opening ceremony. The rabies vaccine thankfully did not.

Why should parents have to be censoring the Olympics opening ceremony if everyone is supposed to be included? It appears the main people the director wanted to include were men who like parodying women.

The Olympics ceremony is supposed to be a family friendly celebration of athletic excellence. Or is there another brief that only a select few understand who aren't Parisians?

I smell blue bullshit.

staryellow · 27/07/2024 08:46

Ffs! It was an incredibly beautiful and imaginative ceremony, full of startling and creative moments. I was so glad my kids stayed up for it, we all were amazed and delighted by it, especially the horse and rider travelling up the Seine and the performance of Imagine, and the torch at the end 😍 They'll never forget it. Wonderful to salute the arts like that.

The torch's journey was exciting and moving. The whole thing was brilliant!

The thing about art though is you have to block your ears to those of the 'tut tut to anything outside my comfort zone, everyone must be the same as me' frame of mind or you'll never make anything new or interesting. Think it's safe to say the French have that one figured out
