To have allowed my dc watch the Olympic opening ceremony?

I was shocked at the library scene leading to a threesome.

The mocking of Christians in the last supper scene.

The feminization of males & the sheer number of transvestites on parade. And a child thrown in the midst of them.

This is a sporting event, why the need to have it so highly sexulaised? My dc were thankfully howling with laughter at parts "the smurf man" singing (complete with his painted bulge) had us all in stitches.

I feel there was a social conditioning agenda to the opening ceremony & it was completely inappropriate given that it is for family viewing. Sexulaised behaviour should not be displayed to children.

was it after the watershed?

@MessinaBloom how would she know until after she'd seen it? I watched it on and off and apart from the library thing (I missed the kiss or whatever it was anyway) I didn't see any of the rest of the stuff. I was pretty bored and kept turning over but looks like I managed to miss the slightly interesting parts. I was genuinely surprised to read about the last supper thing. Wouldn't occur to me any of the ceremony would be woke (or so consistently woke) before I watched it.

OP seems to be quite annoyed about what she saw as an ingrained agenda in the Opening Ceremony. This implies she saw traces of it throughout, so she could have simply turned it off. I know I do that if a programme irritates me enough.

UpTheMagicFarawayTree · 27/07/2024 05:27

Watched it with dd, who is nearly 6 and didn't find it inappropriate at all. A little disjointed in places, but we quite enjoyed it. She fell asleep during the Imagine part though!

Thankfully I didn’t watch it. Am surprised the French chose to be so ‘woke’.

Do you know of Jean Paul Gaultier? Among others.
There is a 'shocking' side of the French, and this was definitely written in this manner, a bit naughty, wink wink style.

Wishihadanalgorithm · 27/07/2024 05:58

I didn’t watch it. Started to as was really looking forward to it but the athletes getting rained on in the boats was too boring for me. We put on the Opening ceremony to 2012 and watched that instead. It was the first time DC had seen it and they loved it.

DP and I reminisced about when we watched this live and were blown away with how good it was - especially as we expected it to be appalling!

InterestQ · 27/07/2024 06:01

We all knew they couldn’t possibly beat Mr Bean AND the Queen jumping out of a helicopter with James Bond.

I didn't pick up on The Last Supper reference at all (but I was chatting to adult DD so perhaps wasn't giving it my full attention at that point).

I agree that IF they intended to refer Last Supper, then you have a point.

Not sure what's wrong with a Greek god having a penis though.

I'm not personally a fan of drag but the catwalk part was to celebrate young talent in the fashion industry.

I was just glad that he had a waterproof paint job!

Transvestites? You really think that is acceptable language?

Homophobia isn’t a good look OP.

Do you know what homophobia means?

TempestTost · 27/07/2024 06:04

I would think that it would be pretty normal to assume the opening ceremony for the Olympics would be intended for family viewing.

There are plenty of very French cultural references and traditions that are completely suitable for all ages, there was really no need to try and sex it up.

I'd also say - while the Olympics might be in a particular country, it's watched by people all over the world with quite a variety of religious and cultural beliefs. It should be suitable viewing for all.

It just comes off as being like that creep who can't stop bringing sex into the conversation because he thinks it makes him edgy and sophisticated, but instead he just seems like a dirty old man.

MossGrowsFat · 27/07/2024 06:06

I just find it so boring that sex has to be shoehorned into everything.

PortiasBiscuit · 27/07/2024 05:17

I’m sorry I missed it now, must have a look.

Spare yourself!

OhshutupRoger · 27/07/2024 06:15

I agree, as well as being boring it was utterly bizarre. DH and I turned it off and commented that we must be getting old.

showersandflowers · 27/07/2024 06:16

If you're worried about a todger bulge now, better not watch any water sports or gymnastics! Those people are also anatomically present!!

Ginmonkeyagain · 27/07/2024 06:19

You were upset a French thing was a bit sexy? Have you met the French?

I mean it was a few drag queens and some kissing, it was hardly Caligula.

Londonrach1 · 27/07/2024 06:23

We found it all very strange and disjointed and boring. The library scene had no warning. We all got bored and turned it off. My mum Whatsapp group all didn't understand it too. Yanbu. Anyway it's over ....

Right? I didn't exactly love all of it and as a prudish British person the kissing did make me awkward, but it's in line with French culture which is just more open about sex than us. I must admit, I felt there must be a lot of French references I was missing but I'm sure the London ceremony was the same for others. It's actually interesting to get an insight into other cultures, especially when it's somewhere like France which I forget can be so different.

Blueskies3 · 27/07/2024 06:28

Whilst these things may be French, I’m sure the threesome scene isn’t appropriate for French children either. I’m fine for adults to watch these themes, but not children and this has always been for all ages. Let’s keep sex out of sport and let’s keep it for people of all ages, backgrounds and religions. If they wanted this sort of woke ceremony I wish there was a disclaimer at the start/ beforehand and I wouldn’t have watched it with my kids

Transvestites are men who dress up as women. Sexual orientation (and therefore homophobia) has nothing to do with it.

MalePoster9000 · 27/07/2024 06:32

Quelle surprise - the ceremony mocked Christianity, but didn’t go anywhere near Islam.

The French were a bit woke!!!!!
It's the end of the world

Ginmonkeyagain · 27/07/2024 06:40

It's a tradition. I remember tne right wing fulmination and American bafflement about the London 2012 ceremony.

TheRakesTale · 27/07/2024 06:40

Clearly there was a global failure of the remote control 'OFF' button, because those of you who had a the vapours during the ceremony clearly had to watch it all in order to 'critique' it here
