To have allowed my dc watch the Olympic opening ceremony?

I was shocked at the library scene leading to a threesome.

The mocking of Christians in the last supper scene.

The feminization of males & the sheer number of transvestites on parade. And a child thrown in the midst of them.

This is a sporting event, why the need to have it so highly sexulaised? My dc were thankfully howling with laughter at parts "the smurf man" singing (complete with his painted bulge) had us all in stitches.

I feel there was a social conditioning agenda to the opening ceremony & it was completely inappropriate given that it is for family viewing. Sexulaised behaviour should not be displayed to children.

The Last Supper is one of the most parodied paintings in history. Interesting that all the others passed you by and this is the one you clutch your pearls over.

When a publisher of Maths text books used beautiful examples of Islamic art on the covers all hell broke loose, we had a couple of parents demand that we covered all the text books! I said I would cover a couple for their sensitive children but that wasn't good enough, naturally I covered none of them in the end.

Just when you think mumsnet couldn’t get anymore unhinged, here comes the OP shaking with rage, pearls rattling and aghast that the the French were sexy and risqué. Who’d have expected that from the French eh? 😂

What exactly do you find sexy about men in dresses, tights & heels..
I can think of lots of words but I would definitely not describe a troupe of prancing transvestites as sexy!

Transvestites? You really think that is acceptable language?

Homophobia isn’t a good look OP.

Do you mean transphobia? Homophobia is VERY different.

What's wrong with the word Transvestites?

Creepingivy · 27/07/2024 12:14

The innuendo surrounding the whole scene implied a threesome was a done deal.

I can't understand why the men were feminised so much throughout. Even the fashion show had no male clothing, just men in make up being feminised.

They really are trying to normalise this shit.

Stereotyping much? Perhaps it's because of people like you that we need more events like last night?

Yep, unless you think misogyny is sexy.

What is "people like you" supposed to mean?

I was more worried about the 100 year old man in the wheelchair. Poor sod, sitting in the pouring rain.

Who was the woman in the sparkly suit on the boat with Rafa Nadal? I came in just as Nadal carried then flame and was then on the boat.

Nadia Comaneci the Romanian gymnast.

I saw many parts of it, it was on as I was doing some jobs and I have to say I was confused too. I saw someone in drag, took no notice then later saw someone else in drag, I watched for a few minutes and saw the library scene. My daughter genuinely asked what's the connection between gay men or drag and Olympics. Very inappropriate for an international sports event. I'm all for inclusion and that includes transgender but this was different, it didn't seem inclusive it seemed pushing an agenda.

Well if that was the intention it's fucking stupid. My French husband (who voted for the Ensemble candidate) said nothing has ever made him want to vote RN more than all this woke nonsense. He wanted the French equivalent of James Bond and the Queen.

Seriously, FFS. Let's stick two fingers up at the millions of people who voted for the far right and make even more people want to vote for the far right. What a good idea.

So what you are saying is that he's a petty, easily swayed person, with no back bone.

i watched the lighting of the cauldron in 2012 on youtube this morning following one of the threads here, it was excellent.

I still think that was the best lighting of the flame I can recall.

I did wonder about all those people who had paid a fortune for tickets to the Opening Ceremony, did they just have to sit around for four hours, only seeing the bits in their location? They would have been better off watching on TV, they would have been dry, plenty of eats and drink, seen it all and kept money in their bank account. Apparently some of the big screens failed due to the weather.

StMarieforme · 27/07/2024 12:46

@TheRakesTale always one who objects to a convicted paedophile being allowed to compete in an international sporting competition, where he could win and be applauded on a podium.

You're okay with this?

I'm the only person who's not?

Always one?!!

Bread and circuses as the golden age declines.....

Don't worry, OP, your DC have been taught the lesson that every young Briton must learn, viz that the French are a nation of perverts.

I too thought it was inappropriate and told my son to close his eyes right before the threesome scene. I thought this would be something fun for my 10 yr. old son and I to watch together and a cool experience for him to watch his first Olympic opening ceremony but, had I known beforehand I probably would've just watched alone or maybe not even at all. My 10 yr old said the Marie Antoinette scene was gross and thought it just thought that most of it was, in his words, "pretty weird" Unfortunately I say, I agree. Best and Only part that I enjoyed, was Celine Dion.

Magnastorm · 27/07/2024 13:55

It wasn't good, but seriously, have the pearl clutchers never been exposed to French art before?

I mean, this isn't hugely out of the ordinary for them. Fair play to them for putting on something that was French, rather than some generic peace to the world bullshit like so many of these things are.

Phineyj · 27/07/2024 13:58

I am still perturbed from time to time thinking about the disturbing astronomy-themed animation I was subjected to in a French planetarium once.

They did try to warn us on the ticket desk, to be fair!

Literally nothing happened in the 'threesome scene'. He literally closed a door and that was it. None of that whole story registered on my children's radar at all.

"Penis to the world" seems to have been the message here surely. How edgy.

Can you explain? I thought transvestism just meant dressing in stereotypical women’s clothing if you are male and vice versa if female. What has it got to do with homophobia?

This.

Men dressed up as women in a show aren't women are they drag then?

No, I think it's quite obvious what I'm saying.

If you pretend not to understand, that's on you.

If Macron chooses not to listen, we'll end up with the far right in power eventually.

The point is that you don't win your population over to your point of view by going, "ha ha ha!" and giving them more of what they don't like.

Oriunda · 27/07/2024 15:03

I adored it. There were so many references to French culture, it was blink and you'd miss it, and I can see how many folks not familiar with France wouldn't get the references to, say, Dalida (parole, parole). I'd hope that everyone got the Les Mis one when parkour guy interrupted rehearsals at the Chatelet theatre!

I'm sure in 2012 many folk didn't get the Mr Bean segment (which I actually hated, and I'm British).

The disabled breakdancer on crutches at the end was fabulous ..... we saw him perform in Paris a couple of weeks ago.
