To have allowed my dc watch the Olympic opening ceremony?

I was shocked at the library scene leading to a threesome.

The mocking of Christians in the last supper scene.

The feminization of males & the sheer number of transvestites on parade. And a child thrown in the midst of them.

This is a sporting event, why the need to have it so highly sexulaised? My dc were thankfully howling with laughter at parts "the smurf man" singing (complete with his painted bulge) had us all in stitches.

I feel there was a social conditioning agenda to the opening ceremony & it was completely inappropriate given that it is for family viewing. Sexulaised behaviour should not be displayed to children.

That choice , that freedom. Is no longer allowed and is frowned upon. Showing disagreement and empathy for those views is "currently" no longer acceptable to many.

As you have just proven. Sooner we stop bashing every view regarding sexuality the better.

Ginmonkeyagain · 27/07/2024 10:12

@brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr yep clearly there is a hole in his tights and it is his skin showing through. He is wearing tight shorts over fishnet tights, unless he has massive low hanging balls I doubt one has escaped.

Geordie01 · 27/07/2024 10:16

Just when you think mumsnet couldn’t get anymore unhinged, here comes the OP shaking with rage, pearls rattling and aghast that the the French were sexy and risqué. Who’d have expected that from the French eh? 😂

Willmafrockfit · 27/07/2024 10:01

the can can was scandalous when it started in 1830, whenever it started! they had open crotches apparently
that is France!

Edited

Yes but that was never supposed to be family friendly viewing. If you go to see a show at the Moulin Rouge you expect to see tits and arse. If you don't want to see tits and arse, you don't go to the Moulin Rouge.

I think the Olympic opening ceremony should be inclusive of people of all ages and cultures.

HolyGround13 · 27/07/2024 10:22

What was inappropriate for children? Drag queens dancing? Some people (barely) kissing, with another person there in a library?

Are Disney films where the prince and princess kiss inappropriate for kids? Is straight gender normative kissing the only kind that’s ok for kids to see?

People still getting offended in 2024 about men wearing “women’s clothes” is hilarious.

I loved the dancers, loved Céline, loved the hot air balloon torch and the blood streamers from the Conciergerie. I was only bored by the endless waving from the boats in the rain!

Malahide · 27/07/2024 04:48

Transvestites? You really think that is acceptable language?

Homophobia isn’t a good look OP.

I believe they were drag queens rather than transwomen. My understanding is that drag queens are gay men who parody women for entertainment but do not actually want to be women. I've just looked up the definition of a transvestite and it is thus:

"Crossdressers often dress only in certain situations. They do not usually identify as transgender."

Whilst the word "transvestite" is considered old fashioned and has been replaced with "crossdresser", I don't see why it's homophobic.

Laiste · 27/07/2024 10:26

I found it disjointed and waaaay too long.
The lack of a proper audience meant the atmosphere was weird.
The boats went on and on and on.
The cuts to the pre-filmed bits were obvious and jarring because they were filmed in glorious sunshine.
The can-can dancers were all out of sinc, and Lady ga ga's music sound was rough.

The library bit was confusing. All the cavorting about in the rain on the cat walk was just weird.
The silver horse was good but again ... friggin' how long?

The last section dragged. The bloke in the brown suit and the endless bloody boat trip with the torch. Serena Williams came close to throwing up, then a load of empty streets and the balloon was reminiscent of the Hindenburgh.

Celine was good. The revolution bit was interesting.

I used the word transvestite in a conversation with my teen daughter the other day ( not meaning to be offensive, just referencing a man wearing women's clothing ). She called me homophonic for using the term. I honestly had no idea the term was no longer in use or could cause offence and definitely did not mean any.

Crazy as it would be very inappropriate to speculate on anyone's sexuality.
Transvestite is basically a word which is from the Oxford dictionary to describe a man dressing in womens clothes. I think it is kinder than drag queen.
Also would prefer not to refer to them as transgender as it would not be appropriate to label them when I don't know their preferred pronouns. They may simply be transvestites men who simply like wearing women's clothes so I am referring to them on face level!

Completely inappropriate and bugger all to do with sport.
I am sick of feeling that everything is a party political broadcast for trans activists.
Also think christianity is a target they felt safe to mock.
How does this encourage international cooperation and good relations?

DumDeeDoh · 27/07/2024 10:27

If there was mocking of an Islamic or Hindu etc picture there would be out cry, but Christianity is ok to make fun of, as there will never be violent backlash to it. It was noticeable that the only child in the ceremony was in the middle of the "queer" element. The threesome was also unnecessary for the opening ceremony of a sporting event.

I was thinking about the athletes and how standing on a boat in the rain is probably not the best preparation for taking part in the Olympics!

I was more worried about the 100 year old man in the wheelchair. Poor sod, sitting in the pouring rain.

Who was the woman in the sparkly suit on the boat with Rafa Nadal? I came in just as Nadal carried then flame and was then on the boat.

Totally agree

Yes, a bit ‘blink and you’ll miss it’.

foothandmouth · 27/07/2024 10:30

We quite enjoyed it. It went on a bit long

Willmafrockfit · 27/07/2024 10:31

i had a headache after 4 hours of tv watching

This thread reflects the issue with it. They don't have the extended understanding of French history and culture that was required to appreciate what the show was intending to depict. When you don't understand it, it certainly makes no sense and comes across as a deliberate intent to be flippant.

That's typical France though! Holding on to it's history and culture and not caring one bit what others think. Learn about our amazing history or get lost!

I live in France. The reaction from most French people I know is "WTF".

I'm going to agree with you about the presentation of The Last Supper. It wasn't about the picture or the artist, but was a parody of a holy event for many people. I'll probably be called a "pearl cluthcher" 🙄but I don't know why that was considered to be ok.

2012 opening ceremony is on You Tube

Thank you.
I watched the whole ceremony last night. I thought it was ambitious, great in parts, a bit tedious in others (eg the fashion show) but overall a good job esp considering the very poor weather. My two teenage dc (both asd, neither straight) found the library scene 'stupid' because, yes, libraries are about books. 1 dc enjoyed the colour & movement, the other found it very 'performative' in places. We're going to watch 2012 now to compare Grin

Aya is great, but some of the other stuff was definitely WTF.

Wishihadanalgorithm · 27/07/2024 10:35

That’s interesting that your DC weren’t overly impressed.

I do want to watch the Paris ceremony but when I can fast forward the boring parts. That might be something for later today.

Sometimes you can't blame certain religions or cultures from being anti-west.

What have we become? Liberalism has utterly lost the plot. Problem is you need checks and balances between liberalism and conservatism, you can't go too far in either direction.

So open minded that your brain clean flew out of your head.

Ginmonkeyagain · 27/07/2024 10:42

You sympathise with anti western feeling because an Olympic opening ceremony had - checks notes - a few male performers in heels and dresses.

Okay.

FastFood · 27/07/2024 10:42

The threesome was a reference of Jules and Jim, a film emblematic of French nouvelle vague.

can you just pause and read that again.

the west offer freedom to everyone and have far advanced women’s rights. People being themselves and not harming anyone yet because they are different are being called out.

well off you trot to the east where you might be in the same position!
