To have allowed my dc watch the Olympic opening ceremony?

I was shocked at the library scene leading to a threesome.

The mocking of Christians in the last supper scene.

The feminization of males & the sheer number of transvestites on parade. And a child thrown in the midst of them.

This is a sporting event, why the need to have it so highly sexulaised? My dc were thankfully howling with laughter at parts "the smurf man" singing (complete with his painted bulge) had us all in stitches.

I feel there was a social conditioning agenda to the opening ceremony & it was completely inappropriate given that it is for family viewing. Sexulaised behaviour should not be displayed to children.

Could you explain why this is homophobic please?

It isn't. @Malahide is just being an eejit

I loved it. I love it more because of the discussion and controversy. I popped out to stick the dinner on and must have missed the library scene? Which building was that in? Anyone got times?
Apparently some of it was supposed to be deliberately provocative to stick 2 fingers up at the right wing movement in France - I learnt that on the MN watch along thread. And that we won't get all of it not being French. E.g. the dude painted blue is known for daft things....

Well if that was the intention it's fucking stupid. My French husband (who voted for the Ensemble candidate) said nothing has ever made him want to vote RN more than all this woke nonsense. He wanted the French equivalent of James Bond and the Queen.

Seriously, FFS. Let's stick two fingers up at the millions of people who voted for the far right and make even more people want to vote for the far right. What a good idea.

I'm impressed that you could all work out what the fuck was going on. We watched it but seems to have missed all the controversial stuff while debating whether the horse's support pole would have been less visible if painted black.

I was saying this!! Why didn't they paint it black?!

zaxxon · 27/07/2024 09:52

This all makes me wonder if the French were just as puzzled by our show in 2012. Did they ask themselves why it was all so childish, so sanitised?

Malahide · 27/07/2024 04:48

Transvestites? You really think that is acceptable language?

Homophobia isn’t a good look OP.

Transvestites is/was a term used for heterosexual men who liked dressing up as women.

Ginmonkeyagain · 27/07/2024 09:54

@MissScarletInTheBallroom you may recall that the 2010 ceremony was very much criticised at the time as "woke nonsense". Many on the right took a lot of umbrage at the celebration of multi cultural Britain and tbe NHS.

Also your husband would vote for a bunch of racists because of a few drag queens at thr Olympic opening ceremony ... okaaaaay

I just thought it was verrry french!

Watched with DS10 who thought the love section was just a 'boring bit about romance', and didn't seem bothered why there were 3 of them hiding away in a room.
The headless singers in the castle bit was bonkers, I loved it, and was delighted when 'blood' exploded from the windows haha!
The dancing was overall o-kay... Thought there'd be much more ballet...
Impressed though bemused by the Olympic flame being in a whole hot air balloon.
Delighted that Celine performed.
It went on for absolute ages, I was struggling.

That building is the Conciergerie..... it's where Marie-Antoinette was kept prisoner before her execution. Well worth a visit. I thought that part with the red ribbons representing the blood of the revolution was done really well.

sunglassesonthetable · 27/07/2024 09:55

Well it made you realise how, well, French the French are.

I loved the rock band and red ladies with their heads chopped off.

And the white horse with the silver rider.

And Celine.

Pouffe C'est la vie.

I didn’t watch it. Started to as was really looking forward to it but the athletes getting rained on in the boats was too boring for me. We put on the Opening ceremony to 2012 and watched that instead. It was the first time DC had seen it and they loved it.

DP and I reminisced about when we watched this live and were blown away with how good it was - especially as we expected it to be appalling!

@Wishihadanalgorithm - where did you find the 2012 Opening ceremony please? If like to watch that again too.

sunglassesonthetable · 27/07/2024 09:56

I loved the 2012 opening. !!!!

Hardlyworking · 27/07/2024 09:58

I was in agreement with you until 'woke agenda' 🤪 Stop reading farage quotes and you'll be fine.

That was the best. I loved the Industrial Revolution part, it was so clever.

I don't think he would actually vote for them but he is fucking pissed off that the only choices are the RN and the idiots on the left/centre.

I think people like Macron need to wake the fuck up and realise that people aren't just voting for the RN because they hate Muslims. They're voting for the RN as a backlash against the "metropolitan elite" that he and his friends stand for. He's learned zero lessons from Brexit. If the RN make further inroads at the next election, or if, God forbid, the next president is Marine Le Pen, Macron and his ilk will bear a large part of the responsibility for that.

Celebrating the NHS in the 2012 opening ceremony isn't remotely comparable to this. The London ceremony was entirely child friendly, for a start.

Willmafrockfit · 27/07/2024 10:00

i watched the lighting of the cauldron in 2012 on youtube this morning following one of the threads here, it was excellent.

the can can was scandalous when it started in 1830, whenever it started! they had open crotches apparently
that is France!

Eh? Why are you equating cross-dressing with homosexuality? LGB people have an inborn sexual preference that harms no one. Men pretending to be women are sabotaging women’s rights, not least in sports.

Ginmonkeyagain · 27/07/2024 10:03

Guys he's clearly wearing a thong that is the same colour as the body paint! The only people seeing balls are you and your lurid imaginations!

Dulra · 27/07/2024 10:04

I loved it. I thought it was great to bring it out of the stadium and to the people. It is Paris hosting let's see Paris. They showed their beautiful city off fantastically. Paris has always been a hotbed for effervescence, art and cabaret, Moulin Rouge anyone?

The only downside was the weather I was getting very concerned for the wet athletes towards the end hopefully there are no ill effects of getting soaked.

Clearly a costume malfunction hardly intentional fgs.

Some people are clearly out just to find fault the references to 2012 and how much better it was apparently, demonstrates that.

Moonlightdust · 27/07/2024 10:08

Aside from being utterly boring, it was total trash.
