To have allowed my dc watch the Olympic opening ceremony?

I was shocked at the library scene leading to a threesome.

The mocking of Christians in the last supper scene.

The feminization of males & the sheer number of transvestites on parade. And a child thrown in the midst of them.

This is a sporting event, why the need to have it so highly sexulaised? My dc were thankfully howling with laughter at parts "the smurf man" singing (complete with his painted bulge) had us all in stitches.

I feel there was a social conditioning agenda to the opening ceremony & it was completely inappropriate given that it is for family viewing. Sexulaised behaviour should not be displayed to children.

Fake blood 😂😂😂 do your children not dress up for Halloween?

No, they've grown up now LOL. It was a daft example to use (because I found it hilarious) but you know, for some parents there were elements in the show that they didn't find appropriate and that's fine for them to feel that way. They know their children best.

Malahide · 27/07/2024 04:48

Transvestites? You really think that is acceptable language?

Homophobia isn’t a good look OP.

I’m assuming you mean OP should have said drag as that was probably more fitting but I don’t think there is anything homophobic in saying transvestite (when that is actually what you’re describing, not true in this case I don’t think) as most transvestites are straight.

Is French history and culture overrun with threesomes and transvestites?!

It wasn't exactly a threesome though was it, seems like quite a big exaggeration of what I saw anyway.

Fair enough. They would hate to go trick or treating round here then 🤣🤣🤣 lots of fake blood and headless kids.

the amount of outrage on this post at people kissing and dressing up is hilarious. Perhaps to worry about things that really can affect your children’s safety and well-being

TizerorFizz · 27/07/2024 09:28

It was unnecessary though at an event to launch a global sporting event. Ditto our NHS rubbish.

zaxxon · 27/07/2024 09:30

Lol if only it had been presented by Antoine du Caunes! He was brilliant. Although I did appreciate the dry humour of Andrew and Hazel.

It wasn't at all inappropriate IMO. I would have liked to see more of the fashion show. That ballet dancer on pointe was terrific, so beautiful.

@Malahide straight from the Oxford dictionary. Not homophobia. Transvestites have been in our society for decades & is a common name for men dressed in women's clothes. Drag queen is also a word commonly used.
What would you prefer them to be called?

@StepAwayFromGoogling Menage a trois mean anything to you? It is a common trope in French culture, particularly art house films of the fifties and sixties.

As for transvestism/men in heels, wigs and make up I give you Louis XIV of France

Meggie2008 · 27/07/2024 09:33

I mean some of it was a bit random (probably would have got more of it if I knew anything about french history) but it was hardly scandalous. I think it's biggest issue was that it dragged out sooooo long.
The assassin's creed looking guy going about the roofs was cool, the Marie Antoinette bit at the old prison was brilliant, the bit where all the statues rose up with prominent French female figures was beautiful, the horse on the river looked amazing, but dragged on too long. I'm sure they explained on the telly that the library bit was based on 50s films?
Didn't really think too much in to the catwalk drag queens, I just took it as a filler piece whilst they were getting people off the boats, didn't pick up on the supposed Last Supper reference, and thought the blue man was a bit bizarre but also can't say that I looked at his crotch either 🤷‍♀️

Twistybranch · 27/07/2024 09:35

Many people in the queer community use the label transvestite- because they are men who enjoy wearing women’s clothing. Their sex and gender aren’t in question.

Thats different from those who are Transgender, who identify with a gender that is different from their biological sex.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 27/07/2024 09:35

Apparently, this is what the naked blue Dionysus represented.

That's hilarious Grin

Mummyoflittledragon · 27/07/2024 09:36

VaccineSticker · 27/07/2024 08:58

Agreed @Creepingivy
Some scenes were shocking indeed.

They have banned the headscarf in their French Olympic team, in the name of secularism, then they go all woke in other scenes, then they go on to show a naked Smurf man with his balls out on a family show that’s been transmitted across the world. But no, the headscarf which least offensive is not allowed, but balls are.
What has the world come to?

Edited

This is a very good point and something I’m going to discuss with my French dh… who didn’t watch the ceremony… and if remember, I will be bringing up with his cousin, who votes far right when I next see her.

Phineyj · 27/07/2024 09:37

I thought parts of it were very good, parts went on far too long and parts were French in jokes. There was a fair bit of son et lumiere.

I have learned that the French invented the Minions.

I thought the library scene was rather sweet, especially communicating by holding up book titles.

I liked the characters exiting their paintings in the Louvre to watch the show through the windows.

It went on far too long though (especially the awful catwalk part and the Eurodisco) and it was difficult to make sense of it - which is inevitable when you spread things out along a watercourse and insert lots of previously filmed sections.

And the random nature of the boats was unintentionally (presumably) comic. A big slightly grotty river cruiser! A lovely wooden river taxi! Etc. I was fully expecting the UK contingent to have chartered an Uber Boat.

I gave up at the "obscurite" point which I think was the final section.

They were struggling with so much rain on the cameras and equipment. That was bad luck.

Tell you what though, whoever specified the dancing platforms and footwear did an incredible job. I was constantly expecting someone to fall over, with so much rain underfoot, but I didn't see a single slip.

TooTiredOfThisShit · 27/07/2024 07:12

Not my cup of tea, but I didn't find it outrageous or shocking, just interminably dull.

It was about as avant guarde as eurotrash circa 2001.

This. I liked all the lights on the Eiffel Tower, the metal horse in the water was ok but went on far too long, I liked Celines performance, everything else was a bit soggy and shit. The sogginess isn't their fault, obviously.

Oriunda · 27/07/2024 09:38

I bloody loved it. Watched from start to finish. I live in France, and to me it touched on all the cultural references. Love, inclusivity, égalité etc. The statues of notable women. The parkour, phantom of the opera etc. I felt very proud of my adopted city.

Supergirl1958 · 27/07/2024 09:39

Creepingivy · 27/07/2024 03:44

@Blueskies3 exactly how I feel. I thought the opera singer who sang the French national anthem was sensational as was Celine Dion but the threesome library scene, the transvestites parading u8& horrible depiction of the last supper (with a little child as part of the act) was anything but wholesome.
It was social conditioning on a global scale pushing the woke agenda yet agaí.

The headless women (marie antoinette?) on the side of the building were strange!!

I think you misunderstand. That was acceptable male attire for the wealthy at that time. Women looked different, they wore big dresses and would not have shown their legs like that. He is not dressed as a woman.

evtheria · 27/07/2024 09:43

I just thought it was verrry french!

Watched with DS10 who thought the love section was just a 'boring bit about romance', and didn't seem bothered why there were 3 of them hiding away in a room.
The headless singers in the castle bit was bonkers, I loved it, and was delighted when 'blood' exploded from the windows haha!
The dancing was overall o-kay... Thought there'd be much more ballet...
Impressed though bemused by the Olympic flame being in a whole hot air balloon.
Delighted that Celine performed.
It went on for absolute ages, I was struggling.

It was depicting the last supper & Smurf man had a very noticeable blue todger bulge.

are you denying male anatomy ?

some of the female performers had visible tit bulges too

anonhop · 27/07/2024 09:45

AGoingConcern · 27/07/2024 04:59

No one mocked Christianity.

  1. The Last Supper is a painting created by a man for pay. It is not sacred or holy.
  2. All are welcome at the Lord’s Table, including those you dislike. Christ was a poor man who fellowshipped with and served all sorts, especially those who others saw as less than or not belonging in respectable society. Drag queens at the Lord’s Table don’t mock Christianity, but attempting to use Christ’s name to shun others and declare them unworthy of fellowship does.

If the kissing was too sexual for your children then just turn it off. There are no global norms that will make everyone comfortable on that front.

Edited

This isn't true. Drag is not permitted in Christianity so it is mocking.

Nobody is saying those individuals can't come to Christ/ are less worthy than anybody else, but to design a scene in a ceremony where they're all in drag is clearly mocking. Drag is about showing off/ exuberance, coming to Christ is about humbling yourself.

It's clearly mocking & it's really horrible + completely 100% unnecessary.

I find this turn of phrase absolutely baffling.

We keep being told that sex and gender are different. OK, fine, whatever.

So you're trans because your sex and your gender are different? But everyone else's sex is different from their gender too, because sex and gender are not the same and only one of these two things is actually real.

It's like saying I'm transastrological because my star sign doesn't align with my favourite colour. No, not like all of those other people whose star sign also doesn't align with their favourite colour and might not even have a favourite colour at all. They're cisastrological and have cis privilege, which means they should let me have whatever I want.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 27/07/2024 09:46

I'm impressed that you could all work out what the fuck was going on. We watched it but seems to have missed all the controversial stuff while debating whether the horse's support pole would have been less visible if painted black.

Oriunda · 27/07/2024 09:47

Mumdiva99 · 27/07/2024 08:37

I loved it. I love it more because of the discussion and controversy. I popped out to stick the dinner on and must have missed the library scene? Which building was that in? Anyone got times?
Apparently some of it was supposed to be deliberately provocative to stick 2 fingers up at the right wing movement in France - I learnt that on the MN watch along thread. And that we won't get all of it not being French. E.g. the dude painted blue is known for daft things....

@Mumdiva99 I think it's the Bibliothèque Nationale. I've not visited yet, but supposed to be stunning.
