Friend had a go at me over a can of Diet Coke

Last Saturday friend had a few people around, she lives in the country so taxi/uber is impossible so all those drinking stayed over.

In the morning there was still some stuff out from the night before, including cans of Diet Coke, I opened one and had a sip, put it down not really thinking and said my goodbyes, my friend said “aren’t you taking that with you?” I responded “no I’m good thanks” and she retorted “what I’m absolute waste” - awkward silence, I grabbed the can, mumbled sorry and left.

Shes now messaged me to apologised. I’m just so annoyed that she spoke to me like a child.

OP posts:

Why on earth would you open a can of coke to have one sip?

Happiestwhen · 26/07/2024 15:19

This is a pet peev of mine as my younger sister does this all the time. Every day there'll be an almost full can lying somewhere.
Easy to know it's not her paying for it, dm has started buying the smaller , tiny cans because of it. So yes you were wrong and hopefully you'll learn from this!!

This thread is insane 😆 the op didn't harm anyone FFS

No, but she was rude and had no regard for waste.

CautiousLurker · 26/07/2024 15:20

No idea why she apologised. Totally agree with her. If you only wanted a sip of something wet, you should have had some tap water.

Butchyrestingface · 26/07/2024 15:21

97% of responders think you're in the wrong, @coldayscientist. Assuming this isn't a reverse, how do you feel now? Grin

Naunet · 26/07/2024 15:22

You sound like a brat. Time to grow up Op, you don’t have a god given right to waste other peoples money.

littlebopeepp234 · 26/07/2024 15:23

Wishimaywishimight · 26/07/2024 14:15

How is it a waste? Surely she could have poured the remainder into a glass?

What after op had had her mouth around the can and drank from it? Would you normally think it’s acceptable to eat or drink someone else’s left overs?

Jollylollylee · 26/07/2024 15:23

MetalFences · 26/07/2024 15:15

Why would I ask? It was leftover on the buffet. If you go to a buffet or bbq etc and the host lays out food and drink on the table for guests do you ask every single time if it’s ok to have something?

That's your only response? After over one hundred replies.

Exactly what I was going to say 😂

Zone2NorthLondon · 26/07/2024 15:24

It’s really wasteful, open a can for one sip and don’t take it with you. Bluntly put but correct. Friend shouldn’t have apologised either

RLouiseH · 26/07/2024 15:24

It’s the “no I’m good thanks” that gets me. It screams “no I’m not, so you need to tidy up my mess.” In that moment, after she asked if you were taking it with you, did that not trigger something in you to think ‘Ah I need to dispose of this.’ The fact you think she is in the wrong is mind blowing.

She treated you like a child cause you acted like one, such disrespectful behaviour in someone’s home.

ItsAlrightDarling · 26/07/2024 15:24

Wishimaywishimight · 26/07/2024 14:15

How is it a waste? Surely she could have poured the remainder into a glass?

And then done what with it? You’re assuming she wanted to drink a can of Coke at that time, surely?

Scorchio84 · 26/07/2024 15:25

Oh my christ! a can opened is a "waste" if the person drinks it in it's enterity or not, I can't imagine hosting people with this mentality

LuckySantangelo35 · 26/07/2024 15:25

Why did you open it if you didn’t want to drink it Op? @coldayscientist

CutthroatDruTheViolent · 26/07/2024 15:25

Sorry YABU. That would really annoy me. Petty, maybe, but what a waste. If you just need a sip then have some water. Rude to open an unresealable container and waste 90% of the contents.

MrsTerryPratchett · 26/07/2024 15:25

Just tell us it's a reverse so we can all go about our day...

@Wishimaywishimight

yeah I don’t eat and drink things that have had other peoples gobs on them.

RenegadeMasterx · 26/07/2024 15:25

To be honest that was a bit silly, to only have a sip with no intentions of finishing the can, I probably would've been pissed off with that aswell 😕

Miyagi99 · 26/07/2024 15:25

You could have at least emptied it down the sink and put it in the recycling but yes, it is a waste. I probably would have glugged it and spent the taxi ride windy and needing a piss just to be polite tbh.

RunnerDown · 26/07/2024 15:27

A member of my family used to do this all the time. I never said anything but it was incredibly annoying . Very entitled way to behave

Hankunamatata · 26/07/2024 15:27

Would you buy a can, take one sip and dump it - no. So why have such bad manners at friends house.

littlebopeepp234 · 26/07/2024 15:27

I’m baffled. Why would someone open a full can just to take one sip out of it and then leave it. Surely if you’re not thirsty then why would you open the can just for the sake of one sip. Do you like the taste of it that much you just needed a fix op?

Im even more baffled why you think it’s ok to just help yourself to it in the first place, open it, take one sip out of it and then dump it as garbage for your friend to clean up in her own house? Yes it was a waste, bad manners and not how I would behave if I was at someone else’s house.

1987qwerty · 26/07/2024 15:28

Something only a complete twat would do.

ThePoshUns · 26/07/2024 15:28

I agree with your friend, that is such a waste. However she's apologised, get over it.

Cantrushart · 26/07/2024 15:28

I have a vision of someone walking past a buffet on their way out poking a finger in every remaining cake and licking the sausage rolls.

SoreAndTired1 · 26/07/2024 15:29

That is very wasteful and thoughtless. You took a sip from the can itself, so one else could have drank from it, so the whole thing would have been tipped out. Why bother in the first place taking one sip? Why couldn't you have taken the can with you?
