Friend had a go at me over a can of Diet Coke

Last Saturday friend had a few people around, she lives in the country so taxi/uber is impossible so all those drinking stayed over.

In the morning there was still some stuff out from the night before, including cans of Diet Coke, I opened one and had a sip, put it down not really thinking and said my goodbyes, my friend said “aren’t you taking that with you?” I responded “no I’m good thanks” and she retorted “what I’m absolute waste” - awkward silence, I grabbed the can, mumbled sorry and left.

Shes now messaged me to apologised. I’m just so annoyed that she spoke to me like a child.

Can’t believe there’s 9 pages of people complaining about a can. Get a life

What a non event.

This made me genuinely LOL

It's not about one can of Coke. It's about thoughtless greed and and waste when you are not the one who has paid for the drink. If you don't understand that then you must be either thoughtless and greedy yourself, or just a bit thick.

Surely a reverse. You were really rude to waste her can just to have one sip. And then leave it for her to deal with. If you felt like a child it was because you were behaving like one - the same oblivious entitlement.

The only thing she did wrong is apologise to you.

This. Act like a child, you get treated like one.🙄

What does your username name?

because in my mind it's Fart-icle

and if that's intentional then that's made me chuckle. If I'm just perpetually 5 then I do apologise

I simply cannot believe you are sharing this utter triviality on mumsnet.
Get over it

And yet so many have answered it 😂. So “triviality” but you still take time to read AND comment

I agree with your friend. Why open a can and take one sip?! Do you do that at home with your own cans of Diet Coke?

She apologised as she realises she snapped but what she actually said was correct.

BippityBopper · 26/07/2024 17:03

Rosscameasdoody · 26/07/2024 16:28

I agree with her - maybe she was a bit rude but she was right. A family member used to visit us and help herself to cans from the fridge. I pulled her up when l realised she was only drinking half and then opening a fresh one. It’s a waste.

Edited

OP's friend was not rude at all in pointing out the waste. How sad is it if you can't be open and honest with friends.

Muffin101 · 26/07/2024 17:03

She said it was a waste, which is true. You overreacted and pouted and sulked and so she felt she needed to apologise. She isn’t the one in the wrong but this is all so trivial, I’m amazed you care enough to post it on here.

They are compaining about a lack of manners

Why would I ask? It was leftover on the buffet. If you go to a buffet or bbq etc and the host lays out food and drink on the table for guests do you ask every single time if it’s ok to have something?

You do sound like a teenager.

UnctuousUnicorns · 26/07/2024 17:06

It is wasteful, though. Just have a drink of tap water if you're thirsty. 🤷‍♀️

honeylulu · 26/07/2024 17:11

I really loathe this sort of selfishness and waste. In your friend's position I would have tried to bite my tongue but if I was feeling tired/hungover it might have slipped out.

If one of my kids had done that they would have had pretty short shrift from me. So maybe you were told off "like a child" but you deserved it. Most children would know better!

Moveoverdarlin · 26/07/2024 17:12

It’s just the blatant disregard of her hospitality. She hosts a party, pays for food and drink, invites people to stay over and still hosting the next morning. Someone has paid for that coke and you just toss it aside because you don’t fancy it. My 4 year old does that.

When you say ‘why would I ask?’ It’s because the party is over, it’s the next morning. So wasteful.

Menstrualcycledisplayteam · 26/07/2024 17:14

She's not the one who should be apologising.

willWillSmithsmith · 26/07/2024 17:15

I wouldn’t have said anything but my sentiments would have been the same as your friend. I wouldn’t open a can at someone else’s home just to have a sip and leave it.

coldcallerbaiter · 26/07/2024 17:15

Friend is right. Sure friend could use the rest up but you have sipped from it, so what did you think would happen to the rest?

loudbatperson · 26/07/2024 17:20

I agree with your friend, it's a waste and just a mess for her to clear up.

Although as she apologised I am guessing she was probably a little more snippy than she intended, likely due to feeing a little ropey from the night before.

I would just let it go.

MartyFunkhouser · 26/07/2024 17:20

I’d have held my comment in. It’s the sort of thing my kids would do when teens.

You were rude.

Did you read all 9 pages.

Or are you too busy living a life?

Opentooffers · 26/07/2024 17:22

You behaved like an entitled child, so got treated like one. If the cap fits. You're lucky to have got an apology.

Dumbledoresniece · 26/07/2024 17:22

You were obnoxious and rude. I wouldn’t even do that in a restaurant where I was paying for the drink. Wasteful.

Eyelashesoffire · 26/07/2024 17:34

It reminds me of that scene in Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt where Jacqueline offers Kimmy a bottle of water and when she declined, Jacqueline throws the bottle straight in the bin. 🤣🤣
But seriously what a waste to take one sip.

AllstarFacilier · 26/07/2024 17:36

You’re being petulant because you don’t like being told off. You were wasteful, it was pointed out. You can pout because she didn’t sugarcoat it like you’d have preferred, but ultimately you were in the wrong and called out and you’re reacting to that.

Yes, my children would never do this. As you say it snacks of selfishness and the friend was probably tired so the truth slipped out!
