Is that her real name? Sounds like a character from Viz!

One of the Modern Parents.

Married to Malcolm

This is entitled tone deaf doing what they do best. Making everything about them. Clueless when it provokes outrage

Yes. It can be both and it probably is.

Edited because I sounded like I was defending the mother. Not my intention.

Izzynohopanda · 26/07/2024 15:52

Do you think her brothers wedding will be targeted? If so, that’s a little unfair on them.

Wonder what the mother would say if all the people who had their time and money wasted because of her dd and the JSO protests did a Just Stop Brother’s Wedding protest to see how the mother liked having her day ruined by people sat in the road and not being able to get where she needed to be in time

ZoeCM · 26/07/2024 16:05

I actually think that jailing them won’t work as they will wear it as a badge of honour

I disagree. I think Cressida, having grown up in a mansion and been privately educated, is going to get a truly gigantic culture shock in prison. I doubt it'll take long before she's thinking "Oh fuck, I really didn't think this through, did I?"

Inastatus · 26/07/2024 16:05

@Puzzledandpissedoff 🤣🤣

IllMetByMoonlight · 26/07/2024 16:06

@User8646382 😂 I can see how you might think that, but no. But I'm clearly in some kind of minority on this thread. I'm a working class immigrant raised on environmentalism by necessity and international solidarity, working with asylum-seekers from regions impacted by the climate emergency so, despite being a middle-aged woman and a mother of a strong-minded DD, I've little else in common with Mrs CressieMum.

And I'm not really in a lather, just frustrated that instead of directing a bit more "Wtf!?"-energy at the fossil fuel corporations who are screwing us all over with the help of our governments (here's hoping Labour will bring fresh hope), the working poor of the UK, many of whom were adversely and disproportionately impacted by the actions of JSO, are being cynically pitted against a handful of protesters (and a mum) instead of encouraged to rise in solidarity with the poor and voiceless in other nations, who are really feeling the climate emergency bite already. In terms of having a voice, and choosing whether we use it or not, we have the privilege. So we should think carefully about where we put our energy.

@SoreAndTired1 , I'm sorry you're unwell. The prevention of emergency services vehicles to reach their destinations doesn't sit well with most people, I don't think.
As to whether Cressida really cares about her cause: I suspect she does. I'm working class and know working class kids who care deeply about the environment and have participated in direct action. It is in the interest of workers of all nations to demand climate justice.

@macaroniandcheeze, way to go!

Oh dear, what a shame, never mind.😂

PumpkinsAndCoconuts · 26/07/2024 16:15

4 years is very harsh imo. Some people get less for absolutely heinous crimes against children, women, animals…

But complaining about missing an event? The hypocrisy is quite hilarious, tbh.

Peaceful protecting should not be illegal

The French wouldnt stand for .it Neither would the Spanish

Outrageous that the uk who prides itself (or did!) On free speach and democracy has made protesting illegal

Peaceful protesting does NOT involve stopping thousands of people going about their daily business.

EsmaCannonball · 26/07/2024 16:20

If it is a destination wedding then surely she would have refused to go to it on principle.

Or not.

Windymoore · 26/07/2024 16:21

PeachSnake · 26/07/2024 11:08

Give her another year so she misses the first anniversary too😉

paperrockscissors · 26/07/2024 16:23

Good. I’m glad she’s missing her brothers wedding. She can have a taste of her own medicine. JSO protesters were responsible for a lot of missed appointments, weddings, birthday celebrations, flights for holidays that families had scrimped and saved for. I heard that someone didn’t get to say goodbye to their parent before they passed away in hospital because of these selfish protesters. The fact that nearly 20% of people on here have voted YABU just about says it all.

Izzynohopanda · 26/07/2024 15:52

And what sort of fuel will the relatives and guests et al be using to get to the wedding, presumeably the bride and groom will be going off on a cycling holiday to appease the sister..

Peaceful protest isn't illegal. Obstructing the roads is.

Thats exactly what it is ....

How unutterably depressing that only 20% of people (even here, on Mumsnet, where the level of education is ostensibly higher than average) have any understanding of the impending climate emergency.

The word 'emergency' isn't hyperbole. We are on the brink of catastrophe.
Insects are disappearing, bird and animal species are becoming extinct, the few remaining forests are still being cleared... people keep buying crap from Shein and driving around cities in SUVs - and this poor girl is the problem?

Bloody hell, wake up!

PBandJ111 · 26/07/2024 16:31

Serves the stupid girl right. Wish people would protest near the wedding and see how they like it. What difference are they making, sweet FA. Go protest in china and see how that goes.

Muffin101 · 26/07/2024 16:36

I mean, it’s a bit ridiculous to be trying to garner public sympathy for this young woman by pointing out she’ll be missing an important event (to her!) when she was jailed for causing massive delays to thousands and thousands of other people, all of whom were on their way to events which were probably rather important to them.
Protest if you want, cause a nuisance of yourself if you must, and if you feel it to be the most effective, but don’t start with the tiny violins when it backfires on your personal life!

Sorry, but I’ve got neither the time nor the inclination to read all this. (I’m a thick, working class northerner, see, so I don’t understand a lot of big words.) I got as far as the bit about your strong-minded daughter. Fascinating, I’m sure, but how is it relevant to Cressida and her brother’s wedding?

Peaceful protesting isn't illegal, this wasn't peaceful. Far from it, most unpeaceful actually caused deep bitter resentment as is shown on the responses to this post.
Lets not draw parallels with what France wouldn't stand for, I don't know a single right minded person that believes the French protesters are an outshining example that we would aspire to have in our country.
And as for free speach - i don't even know what that means.

I do actually, I just think JSO's actions are a hindrance and not a help.

commonground · 26/07/2024 16:39

Gosh, what a great statement by the mum. I really feel for her. She mentioned the wedding to paint a picture of a regular family girl and an example of what she will miss.

She is right, btw. No one is listening. We are screwed. If we had another 100 years to effect change we might be OK. But we don't.
