Aww dear, Cressida's mumsy! That's the way the chips fall when you've got a selfish antisocial felon in the family!

Boomer55 · 26/07/2024 16:41

Missing a wedding? People missed work, school, funerals and hospital appts because of her and the loony brigade.

Tiny violin time…🙄

Inastatus · 26/07/2024 16:37

@popthepopcorns - I don’t think anyone on here who agrees with Cressida’s sentencing is denying that there is a climate emergency!

Well if they agree with sentence they have a very different understanding of the definition of "emergency" to mine.

The comments on this thread illustrate why the planet is doomed.

MrsMitford3 · 26/07/2024 16:48

I don't think the Mum's statement was a great idea-

I def don't feel any sympathy at all for her.
Funny when it's her that is being disrupted it's different.

The prison sentence is meant to send a message.

I have much more admiration for people who clean rivers and take positive initiatives versus the ones who throw soup at works of art and glue themselves to things and shut down motorways-causing widespread chaos and not doing anything to stop oil.

It felt like they were getting away with a lot and they were getting bolder-I don't think they thought they would face any consequences.

commonground · 26/07/2024 16:39

Gosh, what a great statement by the mum. I really feel for her. She mentioned the wedding to paint a picture of a regular family girl and an example of what she will miss.

She is right, btw. No one is listening. We are screwed. If we had another 100 years to effect change we might be OK. But we don't.

@commonground

most “regular family girls” don’t go around committing crime and causing harm to others do they?

kindlyensure · 26/07/2024 16:50

'Ecoyob' 'Moans'. Blimey, what dense headlines.

I hope that young woman realises she is on the right side of history. Poor kid.

No one is listening. Of course the protests are desperate! It's a literal planet emergency. I hope JSO and other protest groups are planning something really mega next. Wake up world!

Sorry, but I’ve got neither the time nor the inclination to read all this. (I’m a thick, working class northerner, see, so I don’t understand a lot of big words.) I got as far as the bit about your strong-minded daughter. Fascinating, I’m sure, but how is it relevant to Cressida and her brother’s wedding?

Not relevant to Cressida's brother's wedding at all, as you well know, but literally responding to your comment @-ing me, suggesting I'm Cressida's mum. So no need for that PA 'stupid Northerner' shit.

Do you think "something really mega" will prompt industries and individuals to take the necessary action?

@commonground

I think most young people recognise the danger the planet is in. Her mum was pointing out that she was an ordinary girl driven to extraordinary action. (Well that's the message I got).

mrswhiplington · 26/07/2024 16:55

MsLavender · 26/07/2024 14:30

Right wingers? Do grow up.

Her and her ilks actions were a direct attack on the poor. They can all rot in prison for all I care. Those living in poverty will be disproportionately impacted by their actions and they fucking know it. It's all well and good for them to crow to us about climate change and the like but I can assure you my impact on this planet is negligible precisely BECAUSE I am poor. I shop in second hand shops, I've never had a foreign holiday, I rarely buy meat because I can't afford it, I rarely have my heating on because I can't afford it, I don't even drive ffs.

If I miss a cancer appointment then guess what, I can't simply then go private, I'd have to wait another 2 months like the cancer patient in this case. If I were to miss work and lose pay it would mean not being able to pay a bill that month. If I missed my DSs autism assessment then I'd likely have to wait another 5 years for one because I can't simply pay for another.

I am sick to the back fucking teeth of being preached to, looked down upon and inconvenienced by those who have zero understanding or empathy for what life is really like for those on the brink of poverty.

Well said!

NonPlayerCharacter · 26/07/2024 16:51

Do you think "something really mega" will prompt industries and individuals to take the necessary action?

Sadly not. But I think they probably think they have to try, right? I mean in an emergency isn't that what you do?

IllMetByMoonlight · 26/07/2024 16:59

@MrsMitford3 "I don't think they thought they would face any consequences."
They definitely knew they would face consequences, most likely arrest and custodial sentences. I said earlier on this thread that preparing for and briefing on the legal impact of direct action is part of planning a protest. Cressida, despite being young, had previous experience of civil disobedience so would have had a realistic idea of what would likely happen.
You only need to look at history to find plenty of prisoners of conscience who served time for taking action based on their convictions.

Pootles34 · 26/07/2024 17:00

The fact that her daughter is going to prison for four years, and her main issue is that she's going to miss her son's wedding, is frankly hilarious.

GoFigure235 · 26/07/2024 17:01

Her actions could have killed people. I'm struggling to see what was peaceful about them.

Mummysaf · 26/07/2024 17:03

The sentence is far too harsh.
However the speech was ill thought out and very foot in mouth, talking about missing events ,oh the irony?!

YummyPotatoBun · 26/07/2024 17:03

Can someone please explain why Ceessida's mum thought it necessary to mention how musically gifted her dd is? I mean she can probably still do some musical activities in jail, or do a bit of composing? Are we to think she's too special with her musical talent to be punished for her crimes? This really confused me.

Is she really on the right side of history when she takes holidays and has a family that has weddings that requires a flight?

Sounds like she is a hypocrite to me.

i don’t think she’s very extraordinary at all tbh (although I guess a criminal record is fairly out of the ordinary)

This.

And just to give a personal perspective, I managed to avoid the M25 on one of the days because I heard about the disruption before hitting the motorway. Instead I did a 20 mile detour through 2 small towns, adding to the traffic pollution along with several hundred other cars, just as children were walking to school.

No one died, and I was able to phone ahead and shuffle my patient's appointments. But I added to the traffic pollution that day because of Cressida et al's actions. As someone who thinks we all need to do more to care for the planet, starting with our own personal actions, I'm a bit over being lectured thanks.

When I read the thread title I thought "Maybe the sister of the former Welsh FM has decided to boycott his wedding". 🤷‍♂️

CautiousLurker · 26/07/2024 15:16

Because it shows her utter hypocrisy that she and her ilk will sabotage other people’s weddings, delay people attending them, berate people for reliance on oil/fossil fuels - but she would have gone on to attend her brother’s wedding overseas involving air travel.

Her brother can do what he likes - but for her and her mother to decry prison sentence because she cannot now attend just show the dissonance.

Okay. But that’s nothing to do with my post, which was responding to someone saying they hoped the wedding would have degradable plates or whatever.

You were responding to my posts… and yes it has everything to do with it. She and her entire family are utter hypocrites, especially expecting people to feel compassion for missing the brother’s extremely un-carbon friendly wedding that beloved Cressy was always planning to attend … despite her position on fossil fuels.
