To have told son I couldn’t go swimming as I have a period

This morning DS8 asked if we could go swimming. I told him no, as I have a period. But we could probably got at the weekend. He was happy enough and shuffled off

My MIL was horrified that I told him this and said that I shouldn’t be talking about periods with a male relative

You sound like a man.

Because I asked a question?
I am genuinely curious.

I was at a lovely thermal spa resort on my 50th birthday. Without any prior signs or warnings, I felt a sharp cramp in my uterus followed closely by what felt like a gush. Looked down and saw a puff of blood leaving my swimmers. Luckily for me (and everyone else) it was just DP and me in that pool, I had black swimmers on and he protected me with a towel while I got out and crept away with watery blood running down my legs.

TMI? Yes, in the hope that you and others like you fuck off and stop telling other women how to period. This thread had mercifully reached its natural end days ago yet here you are talking shit to get it going again.

Edited

Why are you telling me to fuck off for asking a question. So rude!!! If you didn’t like the question you don’t have to answer it.

No i have plenty of evidence and experience with my period that's not in a public swimming pool to know that i would not be comfortable having my period and swimming in a public swimming pool. Are you just being dense?

That’s of course totally fair if you are not comfortable and nobodies busy but your bloody own, obviously . I am not part of any campaign to force women to swim on their period 😂. I was merely curious whether women on this thread saying they are unable to swim on their period had experience of doing this and realised it was not possible without creating a mess, or whether they were just assuming this, or by they “can’t” they meant they didn’t want to (which is perfectly fair enough!)

No. I was just curious how many people had verified experiences of this. Get over yourself honestly.

I have reported this and your previous comment. Theres no justification for being abusive.

The joys of Mumsnet.

"You're wrong about your period. You can swim, so stop making lame excuses. Put a Tampax up it and swim, bitch!"

"I'm offended by the way you talked about your period. You should have added a disclaimer saying NAPALT (not all periods are like that) because you are spreading terrible misconceptions. Shame on you!"

Ah, the whacky gals of Mumsnet. Is it a full moon or something?

I'm far from convinced all the responders are women. Some doubtless are: the type who just love to tell other women off or assume they know better than others do about their own experiences in their own bodies.

But period fetishism is a very real 'thing'. And we all know the demographic who indulge in these kinds of paraphilia.

Ew. True.
Yeah, we should be suspicious of anybody who doesn't understand that swimming is uncomfortable for women with heavy periods. What woman doesn't know that?

Yes, but careful what you say, as you can see I've had my posts deleted for being suss about the motivations of a poster who wants 'verified experiences' of women bleeding in water. Apparently this 'curious' poster's feelings of being 'abused' are more important than our feelings of being fetishised.

MN will delete pretty much anything if they get a complaint about it. It's probably done by a moderation algorithm rather than an actual person with judgement. That's the way it is on most sites.

All the women on this thread saying they cant swim on their period- have you tried it?

All the people on this thread who don’t believe other women can’t swim in their period - have you experienced it and why don’t you believe it?

have I experienced what ?

I didn’t say I didn’t believe it, I just asked a genuine question.

I was simply wondering, out of all the people who said they couldn’t, how many had tried it, because there are a lot of women on this thread saying they can’t.

’m just genuinely interested for how many women there is a physical barrier, and the extent to which it’s a social/ cultural issue. It’s a feminist issue imv 🤷🏼‍♀️

Many of us will have horror stories of swimming on a period.

It’s also not just the swimming. It’s the getting out the pool and then the sudden whoosh when you do. I mean, literally the second of getting out.

Not going into details because of trolls but rest assured, this is not a feminist issue for some of us (and I can make a feminist argument about most things). I truly envy you not knowing the reality of this.

Sugarnspicenallthingsnaice · 07/08/2024 22:46

The thread was already full of such examples before you arrived late and questioned it @Tandora . You can backpedal all you like and pretend you're on some sort of feminist cultural mission, but your real intentions were clear as day. In your own words, you didn't believe us. "or whether they were just assuming this, or by they “can’t” they meant they didn’t want to"

Go on, report that.

I’m not backpedaling, nor does that statement mean “ I don’t believe you”.

No idea why you are so wound up about this , or why you want to police discussion about it 🤷🏼‍♀️. No one is forcing you to go swimming on your period so your rage really isn’t warranted.

There are , however, lots of women / girls who are shamed/ discouraged from going swimming and doing other activities on their period, which obviously is restricting and limiting. It’s a perfectly legitimate discussion to have. All I did was ask a question about people’s experiences which is useful for understanding.

Thinking about it I think this happened to me one as a teen (I used to swim a lot). But it was in the female showers so could have been a lot worse.

GinAndBeerIt · 08/08/2024 02:54

I blame that bloody Claire Rayner and her wings!
According to her you can roller skate, ride a bike and generally have a blast, all while wearing tight white jeans.
And probably swim too!

If you don't want to swim for your own personal reasons, that's absolutely fine. Some women are fine with swimming on their period and some aren't. It's not for anyone but the woman concerned to decide.
Heck, some women can run a marathon whilst on their period, whereas I struggle to run a bath on mine.
We're all different.

Why would you think women would say they can't if they haven't tried? It's one thing saying you don't want to try (which is a perfectly valid choice), but uf you can't, you can't. Like a previous poster, when I tried, I experienced the post-swim whoosh, seconds after exiting the water, and that was many years before the horribly heavy perimenopausal periods I have now.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 08/08/2024 10:03

And incidentally, I just came back from a holiday in an apartment about 10 metres from the sea. Period started the morning after we arrived and lasted until the last day. I love swimming in the sea. If I could have, I would have.

@Tandora

some woman can’t swim on their period. Some women don’t want to try it. Women can do what they want with their own bodies. Get over it.
