To ask you to choose which coffee machine (for someone who hates coffee!) and how to force myself to love coffee as top drs have told me I HAVE to drink it and lots of it

CocoBellaSparkle · 23/07/2024 04:43

Dear MN’s,

I’ve been telling myself to not NC .. (years ago I did a lot ) but I’d rather just be ‘me’ so on that note .. some may have briefly seen/noticed that I’ve got a very bleak outcome .. very later stage ‘C’ caught unfortunately too late and it’s spread and no cure and removal / transplant / chemo will be fatal .. so untreatable and no cure

Anyway got that annoying little bit said and out of the way 😄 sooo my top Doctors/Specialists/ Nurses have all said that for my particular illness (annoyingly would have been better advice in the very early days now it’s more ‘the horse has very much bolted off ..) but nothing to lose in still trying this - coffee is THE healthiest thing people on my shoes can consume for this type of cancer

I DETEST coffee and always have .. i’ve had about 3 or four cups in my whole life .. and those ones not only tasted awful but gave me the shakes , worst migraine and sickness and bad tummy

Genuine question MN’s - can you (or have any of you) hated coffee and made yourself fall in love with it or even tolerated it ?

I love the idea of being a NORMAL person (cause i’m fully aware i’m the abnormal one as everyone loves coffee I believe) and to love coffee and to meet friends for coffee , to appreciate a nice mug of coffee, to have that ‘coffee kick ‘ in the mornings, to enjoy coffee from independent small family owned coffee houses to discover different coffees etc

And now my cancer doctors and nurses are telling me it will only be a good thing for me to drink the stuff so thought would ask you which coffee machines you have ?

i ask as hospital say the instant stuff isn’t really the ‘best’

I love the idea of the touch screen machines BUT they’re crazy expensive (especially for a now single mother , very poorly so had to give up my amazing career and living off savings which has trickled like water AND uber pricey for a coffee HATER 😄)

Now I know (or think ) that the machines that are coffee beans to cup are the best and the pod machines are frowned upon (especially with those who know and love their coffee!)
but I have two boys too and they hate coffee .. so do you think a pod one would be best ?

I’ve had a tassimo in the past (mainly for hot chocolate for my then very little boys and sometimes myself )

My budget is ideally not over £250 (i’ve just moved and finished furnishing my apartment and now I think i need to rob a bank just to live 😄) and have been looking into
Tassimo
Lavazza
L’Or
Nespresso

Plus bonus points - cream coloured /retro look
easy to use (not a faff)
milk frother (don’t think these come with pod machines though - i could be wrong ..,)
also to have pods that have different choices of coffees so maybe I could (force myself ) to actually like a type of coffee ☕️

Also a machine with pods and/or the machine itself that can make a lovejy hot chocolate
pods that include mocha’s/ cappuccino etc

thank you (if you’ve got this far!) for reading and I’m ready to order a machine asap just thought would ask for any pointers

thank you - CocoBella :)

I am so sorry for your diagnosis.

I have been advised that coffee is good for my liver so I make an espresso shot, twice a day and just down it like medicine. Mine is a basic Breville machine.

Margesherwood · 23/07/2024 05:02

Well I think making yourself drink something you don’t like is not a great place to start. I think your starting point is going to find another doctor.

On the coffee point, It’s irrelevant which machine you buy, it is about the coffee itself. You need to try lots of different Coffees to find the one you like the taste and smell of. Personally I think buying a small cafetière for a tenner and a battery operated milk frother (ikea do them for a couple of quid) is a better place to start. And cheaper. And better for the environment than non decomposable pods. Personally I like Illy coffee so I’d recommend that.

CocoBellaSparkle · 23/07/2024 05:03

Summer- oh nooo please please don’t say this or come to this ‘conclusion’ .. I NEVER once stated that coffee or anything for that matter ‘cures’ anything like cancer! please don’t put words in my mouth and say this as that’s actually very wrong on your part!

And to ask if this is ‘genuine’ (???) are you ok Summer? Only I think you’re very strange imo .. do you honestly think i’d be ‘lying’ about having this horrific illness .. it’s knocked my teenage sweet boys to the floor , tears .. utter sadness .. they’re being so good to me and helpful .. i’ve been really positive always in a high spirits (even when not feeling like it) for my boys .. i appreciate every single morning i wake up .. i never thought id find myself aged 39 and facing this and spending so much time in hospital

so please please please THINK before you type and press ‘post’ as if it’s not helpful or kind then seriously what’s the point of your message ?

I am not a coffee person (and not allowed much with my heart condition)... we have a Tassimo that is mine for the sorts of 'not really coffee' i occasionally drink to stay awake.

My sister is a MASSIVE coffee-ist, loves it, swear she bleeds espresso. She has the Nespresso ( because whilst she loves it she's also far too mean to splash out on anything spendier than that!).

I’m sorry to hear you’ve been unwell. I stand corrected if coffee is recommended for certain ailments, I’ve never heard of this. I still stand by the advice on the coffee tho. Coffee is like wine, I hate Chardonnay other people love it. I dislike certain coffee ‘notes’ and steer towards chocolate, nutty notes in mine. The absolute gold standard for me is Harrods Xmas coffee (unbelievably delicious) but it is only available at Xmas (funnily enough 😂). Absolutely steer away from anything freeze-dried tho!

Kitty - thank you! You’ve even said exactly what i’ve got so you understand completely .. i’m very lucky to have the best doctors in the whole of the u.k. .. they don’t even like it when you tell them you’ve bought ‘healthy recipe’ books from
anazon , or liver health books .. they are 100 percent anti ‘alternative medicines’ BUT even they tell patients that (good) coffee is so important

(the other poster ‘concluded’ that i’m saying that I said it ‘cures ‘ cancer - i can’t or couldn’t stress enough that i’ve never implied they anything ‘cures ‘ anything .. i wouldn’t be so naive plus it’s dangerous to say such things!)

@QuestionableMouse reporting you right now .. no way will I let you say this! no way! Learn to have compassion and kindness .. and I hope you’re not a mother because my own children would never troll anyone especially a terminally ill stranger .. so you should know better!

Coffee is rich in isoflavones, which has various health benefits including against some cancers. Robusta beans contain higher levels of isoflavones than arabica ones.

It also contains resveratrol, another antioxidant with multiple documented health benefits. The resveratrols in coffee vary wildly by type and even growing location - so you may as well leave that part to chance.

Coffee is one of the most powerful antioxidants there is. Scientists have identified approximately 1,000 antioxidants in unprocessed coffee beans, and hundreds more develop during the roasting process.

No advice on machine choice, @CocoBellaSparkle, but choose Robusta coffees and experiment with syrups until you find one you like!

Thegreatgiginthesky · 23/07/2024 05:26

You could just eat lots of other food high in isoflavones and resveratrol if you don't like coffee e.g Very dark chocolate paired with berries. Soy which contains isoflavoneshas been linked to lower rates of breast cancer in Asian countries.

Speedweed · 23/07/2024 05:26

What about coffee enemas if you don't like the taste? Apparently it's a health thing - instructions on Google I believe

DysonSphere · 23/07/2024 05:27

I've just Googled and read that studies have shown coffee may be preventative for liver and womb cancer on Cancer Research UK, and away from that another study showing coffee may improve survival rates after breast cancer and actually theres's more, bit of a rabbit hole this morning.... well you learn something new or surprising everyday! When you're at end stage I'm sure it can't do much more than help!

OP I am very sorry to hear about your diagnosis

I am a cheap bottled coffee lover, I actually don't enjoy proper strong authentic coffee, but Turkish Coffee is flavoursome and easy to make. You buy a small coffee pot (like a tiny skinny saucepan) that you put on the hob and then - let me see if I remember - you add several scoops (1-3) of fine almost powdered coffee, it comes in a foil bag, add cold water then stir continuously with small spoon until it heats and froths up a bit, then remove from the fire and sieve into a cup. Some people add milk after, some don't. I think you can purchase in world food aisle at supermarket.

I'm not Turkish or Arabic so someone better informed on the delights and methodology of Turkish coffee may tell you better! 😬💐

CocoBellaSparkle · 23/07/2024 05:28

@Garlickest thank you ! So kind and also helpful advice i really appreciate it!

plus what you’ve said about coffee is EXACTLY what my surgeon Dr said (she’s the top of her field in the U.k. - i’m under the The Royal Free hospital in NW london )
i just couldn’t remember to write in this post how she said it but you’ve just said it better than myself 😃

sashh · 23/07/2024 05:28

I have a moka, a filter machine and a tassimo (my council recycles the pods).

Instant coffee IMHO should not even be called coffee.

I got the pod machine for visitors as I don't drink milk so I never have milk in the house. When I first got it I ordered a mixed bag of different drinarious options.ks so I could try the various drinks.

I like the Suchard chocolate and that's where I think you should start, try a mix of hot chocolate and coffee.

Also try iced coffee. Make an espresso and add lots of water and ice.

Shoxfordian · 23/07/2024 05:39

I'm really sorry to hear your diagnosis

If you do get a bean to cup machine then go for the lightest colour beans you can find as they'll taste less harsh, some nice syrups and use a lot of milk

CocoBellaSparkle · 23/07/2024 05:40

@DysonSphere - i took me years to find out it’s actually healthy and i have googled similar too and it blew my mind really as i grew up hearing/being told/ reading that coffee is bad for us!
And thank you for your reply/advice

I knew this was the best place to come and i knew you’d know your coffee compared to me (a six year old knows more on this subject compared to me 😄)

sadly upthread a nasty response from someone but I think that’s life .. you can have 100 people .. 99 are wonderful and you always get that ‘one’ who has to be horrible but (easier said than done) to tell myself is that it says more about them than the person they’re replying/speaking to .. as nice people don’t go around (hopefully) even thinking they someone is lying about a terminal illness and a young -ish mother , single with lovely boys who are still so young .. and definitely wouldn’t even type and press ‘post’ such a reply!

Having worked in oncology, I am fascinated to know which type of cancer is managed by coffee? Is this relatively new? Are you involved in a clinical trial?

Is this thought to be curative, or palliative to ameliorate the effects of the cancer?
To be honest, there is nothing wrong with an instant coffee, and if you don't like coffee, not point investing in a machine/bean grinding etc. Just but a jar of good instant, grit your teeth and drink.

CocoBellaSparkle · 23/07/2024 05:45

@DysonSphere you’ve just reminded me of turkish teas! and was such a beautiful tasting tea and the turkish lady used to say ‘you’ll live our turkish coffee!’ so that’s on my list - thank you for reminding me of this ☺️☺️

I only drank plant milks but sooo poorly now .. drs have advised me to have cows milk /dairy .. i didn’t want to but i’ve had to .. but all of my family are plant based so good to look into this as would be great to offer them nice coffee but without dairy milk etc

@FalderalderaldoSittingintheWater if at all possible could I private message you? purely because (and i’ve seen it from an earlier poster upthread) i would HATE for anyone to think that im ‘implying’ that coffee (or anything for that matter) ‘manages’ , or ‘promotors longevity’ or ‘cures’ cancer or any illness .. as i know or i believe nothing can simply ‘cure’ anything and i know it’s dangerous to even imply something is good .. cause they could be advised to be good for me may not be advised for the next patient etc .. or if you think i should or could i will simply reply to you on here (?) thank you for your reply btw ☺️

Caffeine pills aren't going to help you if coffee is what your doctors have advised, surely? They aren't the same thing at all.
