To ask you to choose which coffee machine (for someone who hates coffee!) and how to force myself to love coffee as top drs have told me I HAVE to drink it and lots of it

Dear MN’s,

I’ve been telling myself to not NC .. (years ago I did a lot ) but I’d rather just be ‘me’ so on that note .. some may have briefly seen/noticed that I’ve got a very bleak outcome .. very later stage ‘C’ caught unfortunately too late and it’s spread and no cure and removal / transplant / chemo will be fatal .. so untreatable and no cure

Anyway got that annoying little bit said and out of the way 😄 sooo my top Doctors/Specialists/ Nurses have all said that for my particular illness (annoyingly would have been better advice in the very early days now it’s more ‘the horse has very much bolted off ..) but nothing to lose in still trying this - coffee is THE healthiest thing people on my shoes can consume for this type of cancer

I DETEST coffee and always have .. i’ve had about 3 or four cups in my whole life .. and those ones not only tasted awful but gave me the shakes , worst migraine and sickness and bad tummy

Genuine question MN’s - can you (or have any of you) hated coffee and made yourself fall in love with it or even tolerated it ?

I love the idea of being a NORMAL person (cause i’m fully aware i’m the abnormal one as everyone loves coffee I believe) and to love coffee and to meet friends for coffee , to appreciate a nice mug of coffee, to have that ‘coffee kick ‘ in the mornings, to enjoy coffee from independent small family owned coffee houses to discover different coffees etc

And now my cancer doctors and nurses are telling me it will only be a good thing for me to drink the stuff so thought would ask you which coffee machines you have ?

i ask as hospital say the instant stuff isn’t really the ‘best’

I love the idea of the touch screen machines BUT they’re crazy expensive (especially for a now single mother , very poorly so had to give up my amazing career and living off savings which has trickled like water AND uber pricey for a coffee HATER 😄)

Now I know (or think ) that the machines that are coffee beans to cup are the best and the pod machines are frowned upon (especially with those who know and love their coffee!)
but I have two boys too and they hate coffee .. so do you think a pod one would be best ?

I’ve had a tassimo in the past (mainly for hot chocolate for my then very little boys and sometimes myself )

My budget is ideally not over £250 (i’ve just moved and finished furnishing my apartment and now I think i need to rob a bank just to live 😄) and have been looking into
Tassimo
Lavazza
L’Or
Nespresso

Plus bonus points - cream coloured /retro look
easy to use (not a faff)
milk frother (don’t think these come with pod machines though - i could be wrong ..,)
also to have pods that have different choices of coffees so maybe I could (force myself ) to actually like a type of coffee ☕️

Also a machine with pods and/or the machine itself that can make a lovejy hot chocolate
pods that include mocha’s/ cappuccino etc

thank you (if you’ve got this far!) for reading and I’m ready to order a machine asap just thought would ask for any pointers

thank you - CocoBella :)

What a pity you are being encouraged to consume something you are not keen on, at a time when more pleasant and delicious things would be a better psychological boost.
I would look at getting a small bean to cup machine and trying small quantities of really good coffee beans. The Monmouth Coffee Company have some interesting offerings. I had coffee made from Brasilian beans from there last year. It tasted almost like chocolate, not at all strong or acidic.

CocoBellaSparkle · 23/07/2024 05:57

@sashh i recycle everything and anything i can and i’ve heard pods aren’t environmentally friendly but the ‘newer’ machines they supply recyclble pods (?) and that’s fantastic that your council offers a service to recycle them! love things like that!

wonder if companies ever offer or one day will (?) a service where you send back /take pods to a recycle base and you get a small percentage off your next batch

also i’ve heard that (lavazza i think ?) that on their website you subscribe to their monthly pods subscription and then you get to buy one of their machines worth £249 for one pound?!! and i know it’s legitimate but it seems too good to be true at the same time !

Sorry to hear of your diagnosis, OP!

Jura E8 is what I use - it’s bean to cup so you can pick your own coffee beans (I use Union or Red Brick) and play around with various makes until you find one you enjoy. Not cheap but the coffee is always so smooth. Proper barista style! And it heats and foams the milk in the same machine 😍

CocoBellaSparkle · 23/07/2024 06:03

@NoNoNona thank you! And i agree 😀 as i’ve also been told no salt , ideally no or limited sugar, no take aways , no fried foods, no white flour so no biscuits , slice of cake, cookies, white bread ,
although most of these are what doctors have always said about diet in general (?) and i never have white bread , i don’t eat pizza or pasta , i don’t eat red meat , don’t have fast food .. BUT ive always been a picker like cheese and biscuits and branston pickle - could eat those types of foods all day

and i know it’s so bad but i love salt (even had it on my soup ) if i went to the seaside and everyone had fish and chips .. id rather eat nothing than chips with zero salt .. why do things that taste so good have to be so bad 😫

@Killingoffmyflowersonebyone like my original post said .. when it comes to coffee everything sounds so delicious and luxurious even the way you just wrote that beautiful post ! you couldn’t write that way about .. say - banana milkshake or a can of coke 😀

and i’m going to google/search up what you’ve kindly advised right now as i think that’s where i’ve bwen going wrong all these years .. i’ve had not good quality coffee so my experience of the taste and quality of coffee is clearly very poor 😀 i might even go for a coffee this morning where i go and hire a ‘work space’ (they do columbian coffees and I can’t lie they smell delicious!)

OP, if coffee gives you the shakes, you might try decaffeinated. I am a trembling wreck and need to go to the loo more often than a little dog if I drink caffeinated coffee, so Imalways drink decaf. As I understand it, you still get the health benefits - you might care to try it? You can recycle Nespresso pods - you get special bags from Nespresso to put them in, and ours are collected with our recycling. If coffee upsets your stomach, start off making it quite weak and milky, and work up to something stronger. Oh, and one other thing, if you are low salt - pickles vary tremendously in how much salt they contain - the sweeter pickles like caramelised onion chutney tend to be lower in salt. If you like cheese, try cranberry sauce with it (no salt) or quince jelly (also no salt).

Tweensandterribletwos · 23/07/2024 06:13

We have a nespresso with milk wand. Ghey also do smaller, colourful machines with separate frothers, but cheaper frothers can be bought from Sldi on special buy etc too. Great as you can choose what type(s) of coffee you like best. They also now do free pod collection with Royal Mail from your doorstep. If you have one near you they’ll do a tasting so you can (hopefully) find a type you enjoy.

@FalderalderaldoSittingintheWater if at all possible could I private message you? purely because (and i’ve seen it from an earlier poster upthread) i would HATE for anyone to think that im ‘implying’ that coffee (or anything for that matter) ‘manages’ , or ‘promotors longevity’ or ‘cures’ cancer or any illness .. as i know or i believe nothing can simply ‘cure’ anything and i know it’s dangerous to even imply something is good .. cause they could be advised to be good for me may not be advised for the next patient etc .. or if you think i should or could i will simply reply to you on here (?) thank you for your reply btw ☺️

Well you have now haven't you? Might as well tell us all what you think.

Ineffable23 · 23/07/2024 06:16

I don't like coffee but I tried V60 drip filter coffee the other day and it was much less bitter than coffee usually is. It's still not really my thing but it would probably be my coffee of choice as a non coffee drinker. Alternatively if I need coffee while I am out I have an espresso with a sugar in it (sacrilege I know) and just down it.

twomanyfrogsinabox · 23/07/2024 06:18

Tassimo also give you disposal bags to return their pods.

BrendaSmall · 23/07/2024 06:18

You need to get a proper coffee machine, filter coffee or bean to cup machine, a lot of machines that use the pods are useless and a lot of pods contain instant coffee

  • disclaimer - i’d NEVER share anything from googling things etc .. BUT under the advice of the wonderful hospital i’m in in Hampstead .. they have all said ‘don’t google ANYTHING ‘ (because you can find out the worst outcomes etc ) but they’ve themselves said that the only thing i should look at (if i ever need or want ) is the B L Trust website .. anyway this is about coffee and my type of stage four ‘C’ (sorry can’t bare typing the word ) it cannot be proven to be a ‘magic cure’ but it’s meant to have been scientifically proven that it can only be a good thing .. and I guess i have nothing to lose at this stage .. even if at best it helps my body fictions better , helps my forgetful brain to remeber things , to keep my going advise 3 nights in a row of zero sleep etc .. even if it helps slightly out with those things then I believe it won’t be money wasted in hiding good coffee and/or machine
  • thank you again everyone for your kind responses.. really appreciate it! a sentence of a nice encouraging or supportive message really goes a long way ..
  • lastly my (coffee loving) friends and family will be happy as there’s only so much tea they can drink when they visit me 😀

I am curious to know why coffee has been recommended as this is something completely new. Did you tell the Dr you didn't like coffee? I am just finding this a bizarre recommendation.

No idea if it has the same health benefits but I really dislike all 'proper/nice' coffee but enjoy a cup of instant with a lot of milk!

ebadame · 23/07/2024 06:28

I find caramel syrup makes coffee MUCH nicer.

There are numerous studies that show an association between drinking coffee and lower risks of returning colorectal cancer as well as lowered risk of liver and other cancers. The research is continuing so if you have evidence that contradicts that research and suggests that what the OP has been told is wrong then the OP, her medical advisers and the researchers, would no doubt be interested to hear from you. Coffee has very useful phytonutrients as well as soluble fibre. I can say from personal experience that it’s very difficult when you’re ill to have people rubbish the medical advice you’ve been given

RandomMess · 23/07/2024 06:30

I think bean to cup machine to maximise the benefits.

Drink espresso shots like medicine

Research your beans.

Gelasring · 23/07/2024 06:31

I hated coffee most of my life. I got myself into it by drinking mocha (hot chocolate and coffee) to start with. Proper coffee is way nicer than instant. You don't need to spend loads though, I've got a cafetiere/french press and it tastes not far off as good as bean to cup and just as good as pods I reckon. You can even buy little bean grinders for a tenner on Amazon and I got a milk frother stick/wand for a couple of pounds in IKEA.

OscarHotelNovemberOscar · 23/07/2024 06:32

Bean to cup machines are expensive - I’ve got a separate grinder to grind the beans.

If you’re thinking about a cream coloured machine have a look at reviews to see if there’s much mention of staining, personally I’d go with a darker colour.

All the best

CocoBellaSparkle · 23/07/2024 06:32

@Muteswan I hear you! as i’ve under recommendations bought ‘fancy’ types of foods and snacks etc that cost four times the amount of the cost of fashioned ‘basic versions’ and sometimes the latter ones are 109 times more delicious! it’s like the saying ‘less is more’ i’ve been out for fantastic meals and even (tried) to cook and make beautiful recipes etc BUT since coming out of my marriage it can be so ‘freeing’ and taste wise - delicious! to have beans on toast or a bowl of cereal for my dinner 😀 or a good old pack of jacob’s crackers or even the shops own version less than a pound! and some butter and cheese and branston .. delicious! or hot baguette 🥖 especially reduced baguette.. delicious

All the petite showing dOUBT and calling BS, sort yourselves out. As a species we have almost no idea what real good a quality food can actually do for our health , we have barely scratched the surface.

Did you know there is a type of prostate cancer where a portion of broccoli a day can prevent/ reduce the chances of it returning? There is a type of mushroom that when combined with a cancer drug has shown to massively improve and even cure cancers? That one nicotine patch paired with a tiny single dose of a domaine blocker can reduce the severest symptoms of Tourette's for weeks at a time? Reducing the carbohydrate Intake as low as possible in your diet and eating clean whole foods can almost stop and even prevent/kill cancer growth? One dose of magic mushrooms can change a suicidal persons life for the better and totally remove fear from a as dying person, giving them absolute peace.

Food really can be therapy and even cure illness. It just doesn't fit YOUR perception of medicine as we have all been brain washed that if it doesn't come in a plastic bottle or syringe it won't work.

All of this information is available by Google and has peer reviewed studies. All of it. But there is no money to be made so it's repressed.
