To ask you to choose which coffee machine (for someone who hates coffee!) and how to force myself to love coffee as top drs have told me I HAVE to drink it and lots of it

Dear MN’s,

I’ve been telling myself to not NC .. (years ago I did a lot ) but I’d rather just be ‘me’ so on that note .. some may have briefly seen/noticed that I’ve got a very bleak outcome .. very later stage ‘C’ caught unfortunately too late and it’s spread and no cure and removal / transplant / chemo will be fatal .. so untreatable and no cure

Anyway got that annoying little bit said and out of the way 😄 sooo my top Doctors/Specialists/ Nurses have all said that for my particular illness (annoyingly would have been better advice in the very early days now it’s more ‘the horse has very much bolted off ..) but nothing to lose in still trying this - coffee is THE healthiest thing people on my shoes can consume for this type of cancer

I DETEST coffee and always have .. i’ve had about 3 or four cups in my whole life .. and those ones not only tasted awful but gave me the shakes , worst migraine and sickness and bad tummy

Genuine question MN’s - can you (or have any of you) hated coffee and made yourself fall in love with it or even tolerated it ?

I love the idea of being a NORMAL person (cause i’m fully aware i’m the abnormal one as everyone loves coffee I believe) and to love coffee and to meet friends for coffee , to appreciate a nice mug of coffee, to have that ‘coffee kick ‘ in the mornings, to enjoy coffee from independent small family owned coffee houses to discover different coffees etc

And now my cancer doctors and nurses are telling me it will only be a good thing for me to drink the stuff so thought would ask you which coffee machines you have ?

i ask as hospital say the instant stuff isn’t really the ‘best’

I love the idea of the touch screen machines BUT they’re crazy expensive (especially for a now single mother , very poorly so had to give up my amazing career and living off savings which has trickled like water AND uber pricey for a coffee HATER 😄)

Now I know (or think ) that the machines that are coffee beans to cup are the best and the pod machines are frowned upon (especially with those who know and love their coffee!)
but I have two boys too and they hate coffee .. so do you think a pod one would be best ?

I’ve had a tassimo in the past (mainly for hot chocolate for my then very little boys and sometimes myself )

My budget is ideally not over £250 (i’ve just moved and finished furnishing my apartment and now I think i need to rob a bank just to live 😄) and have been looking into
Tassimo
Lavazza
L’Or
Nespresso

Plus bonus points - cream coloured /retro look
easy to use (not a faff)
milk frother (don’t think these come with pod machines though - i could be wrong ..,)
also to have pods that have different choices of coffees so maybe I could (force myself ) to actually like a type of coffee ☕️

Also a machine with pods and/or the machine itself that can make a lovejy hot chocolate
pods that include mocha’s/ cappuccino etc

thank you (if you’ve got this far!) for reading and I’m ready to order a machine asap just thought would ask for any pointers

thank you - CocoBella :)

@OscarHotelNovemberOscar - that’s a good point! i’ve just got (i must be mad) a new retro pink SMEG fridge .. (my teenager already damaged it 😫 but should be ok) but when with my controlling not very nice ex H .. was not allowed pale colours in the house (and i was the breadwinner !) so now to have a pink smeg and a retro cream kettle is such a lovely feeling (i sound really boring to get excited about fridges and the styles and colours 😫😄

So sorry for what you're going through, OP.

I love coffee and have never had a good cup of coffee from a pod machine. I have a ninja coffee bar and love it. It makes regular, rich, iced, cold brew, and specialty (very close to espresso.) Mine also makes tea, brewed at just the right temperature for different types of tea. It also can make individual cups of different sizes, a half carafe or whole carafe.

I use creamer in my coffee, there are some wonderful flavored creamers as well as flavored coffees. One of my favorite things for something decadent is a caramel or butterscotch flavored coffee with caramel creamer, whipped cream and a drizzle of caramel sauce.

skinnyoptionsonly · 23/07/2024 06:42

I'm sorry to hear your diagnosis. I won't insult you by debating the reasons for the coffee thing.

Maybe don't spend your precious money on something you may not use much as you don't really love coffee. Get one of these (only example. Lots available more cheaply. Get a mill whisk thing like an aero chino.

Big machines are a faff ! ( I have both !)

Sheknowsaboutme · 23/07/2024 06:42

You dont need a fancy machine. Its a gimmick. Buy a jar of coffee.

Thegreatgiginthesky · 23/07/2024 06:43

Muteswan · 23/07/2024 06:27

No idea if it has the same health benefits but I really dislike all 'proper/nice' coffee but enjoy a cup of instant with a lot of milk!

I think there is a Michael Mosely Just One Thing on coffee where he said instant has the same benefits.

RandomMess · 23/07/2024 06:44

True get a decent burr bean grinder and then a stove top espresso maker.

CocoBellaSparkle · 23/07/2024 06:44

@sesquipedalian that’s exactly how i am after coffee! so i’ve screenshot your kind and very hendul advice - thank you ! ☺️
And i LOVE cranberry .. love it on cheese and crackers 😀😀 that’s such a fantastic idea to use instead of salt .. and it’s relatively healthy and no nasties and hardly any calories in it either ! and the other thing you advised - i’ve never had this but going to order some now ! ty :)

If you don’t like the taste of coffee try it without milk. I thought I hated coffee for years until I had it black one day, it was a revelation.
Either get a cafetière or drip coffee machine.

strawberryshortcakescat · 23/07/2024 06:45

So sorry about your diagnosis.
I would go with a Nespresso machine. Available in cream. And I would buy the Monin coffee syrups.

Iced coffee made right is gorgeous!
Starbucks Iced Brown Sugar is amazing!

Coconutter24 · 23/07/2024 06:45

Sorry to hear about your diagnosis

“I DETEST coffee and always have .. i’ve had about 3 or four cups in my whole life .. and those ones not only tasted awful but gave me the shakes , worst migraine and sickness and bad tummy”

If you are likely to not have long left and it isn’t going to cure you why bother if you detest it so much? What are the benefits the doctors have said you’d get from it, are they good enough to put up with the above symptoms it gave you? You should spend all the time you’ve left however long that is enjoying food and drink not forcing yourself to have something you detest (unless it’s going to cure or add years and years on your life expectancy)

Shoxfordian · 23/07/2024 06:47

No worries, I like coffee but I don't like the really black coffee beans, they're too bitter. Go to Starbucks though, you can have cream, syrup, single shot so less strong, toppings - it won't even taste like coffee anymore 😃

Cardamomandlemons · 23/07/2024 06:47

A moka pot is better than a machine and much much cheaper. Tons on Amazon etc.
Buy a set of taster coffees (ground for moka pot, it will tell you how it's ground on the packet), some coffees are very different than others

Vegandiva · 23/07/2024 06:48

CocoBellaSparkle · 23/07/2024 05:45

@DysonSphere you’ve just reminded me of turkish teas! and was such a beautiful tasting tea and the turkish lady used to say ‘you’ll live our turkish coffee!’ so that’s on my list - thank you for reminding me of this ☺️☺️

I only drank plant milks but sooo poorly now .. drs have advised me to have cows milk /dairy .. i didn’t want to but i’ve had to .. but all of my family are plant based so good to look into this as would be great to offer them nice coffee but without dairy milk etc

why did the doctors tell you to drink dairy milk? it is my understanding that dairy is like rocket fuel for cancer cell growth 🤔

KeepinOn · 23/07/2024 06:48

I'd get a stovetop espresso maker and a bean grinder. If you don't like the taste but the active properties would benefit you, then espresso is the way to go.

2021x · 23/07/2024 06:50

I am with you @CocoBellaSparkle i Hate coffee. I love the way it smells but it tastes
like dirt. I also loathe tea- especially with milk.

HOWEVER, I now live in NZ where coffee=life and I found that I started with a mocha, and was able to work my way up to a cappuccino with chocolate sprinkles if I dipped a biscuit. In Japan I also found ice coffee completely manageable

Nottodaythankyou123 · 23/07/2024 06:52

I’m sorry to hear of your prognosis OP that’s awful for you and your family.

i spent years thinking I didn’t like coffee - turns out what I don’t like is hot drinks! I have a L’OR machine, pop a capsule in (I’m not a connoisseur by any means but I like the Starbucks blonde roast) and make an espresso, add a load of ice and almond milk (and a drizzle of vanilla syrup if I’m feeling fancy) and have an iced coffee instead

Nespresso is very simple to use, and you can buy a separate milk frother.

The first few times I had coffee (as a tween) I hated it too - it’s an acquired taste. Now I absolutely love the smell of freshly ground beans.

Pre- ground coffee and a cafetière would be a cheap option to start.

You could try with sugar to start (tho not really a healthy addition), or lots of milk.

Apollo365 · 23/07/2024 06:54

Firstly, OP I am so sorry to I hear of your diagnosis/
secondly I love coffee.
I started out with a nespresso - I would say this is good for a beginner - lots of options for pods of varying strengths and you can recycle them.
I think moved on to Lavazza as I flipping love their coffee and then my full blown addiction really got going. You can compost their pods.
When this passed on I got a bean to cup and still fill it with Lavazza beans so best of both. It was so expensive though. Good luck OP.
add some milk, make it over ice, add a bit of maple syrup, do what you like, you’ll hopefully find a concoction you like :)

InfoSecInTheCity · 23/07/2024 06:54

I'd recommend finding a coffee drink that you will be able to drink before investing in a machine because that will help you to define your requirements.

For example if you find you prefer iced coffee then you really don't need a milk frother, just an expresso machine.

Iced latte
Shot of expresso (double shot if you're making a large glass)
Milk of choice
Ice

Add a teaspoon of condensed milk if you like sweet, creamy drinks for a Spanish iced latte.

Use pistachio milk for a nuttier taste
Add a syrup if you'd prefer a vanilla/hazelnut/caramel flavour.

Frappe
Shot of expresso
Milk
Xanthum gum (thickens the drink)
Syrup if you want to add a flavour

Blitz in blender till the ice is all crushed and everything is blended together

Need to get ready for work so not read if someone else has said this. so sorry you are ill and wish you all the best.

My ‘entry’ coffee was a mocha which is hot choc plus a shot of coffee. Try in a coffee shop see if you like it, you can also add shot of syrup for extra sweetness. I now drink black coffee no sugar so much like red wine you can aquire the taste!

I have a nespresso ‘original pod’ machine, they collect pods to recycle, my machine includes a milk heater and frother to the side (Fill with milk or equiv and press a button - no faffing about with stream wands etc). I much prefer the coffee to tassimo or dolce gusto but it only does ‘coffee’ those others do pods of everything. I make mine with one pod espresso shot then lots of hot water to fill up the cup. DH does a coffee shot then fills with milk. Syrups optional - you can get chocolate syrup if you decide you like mocha.

French press is a right faff to clean, and if you don’t really like it not sure why you would want to make 4 + cups at a time! filter drip machines coffee can taste a bit ‘old’ long before you finish the jug.

Bean to cup sounds great but for me the convenience and freshness of recyclable pods and relative cost means I’m sticking to nespresso original pods. Fresh coffee tastes and smells much nicer.

Your understanding isn’t correct. There is no conclusive evidence that suggests this.

PartnersInCrime · 23/07/2024 07:42

DH just has a Bodum cup (comes with a plunger built into the lid) and uses ground coffee he buys in a little deli - much cheaper than getting a coffee machine. Supermarkets also sell coffee ready ground or you can buy beans and a grinder.

Sorry about your diagnosis @CocoBellaSparkle
