To ask you to choose which coffee machine (for someone who hates coffee!) and how to force myself to love coffee as top drs have told me I HAVE to drink it and lots of it

CocoBellaSparkle · 23/07/2024 04:43

Dear MN’s,

I’ve been telling myself to not NC .. (years ago I did a lot ) but I’d rather just be ‘me’ so on that note .. some may have briefly seen/noticed that I’ve got a very bleak outcome .. very later stage ‘C’ caught unfortunately too late and it’s spread and no cure and removal / transplant / chemo will be fatal .. so untreatable and no cure

Anyway got that annoying little bit said and out of the way 😄 sooo my top Doctors/Specialists/ Nurses have all said that for my particular illness (annoyingly would have been better advice in the very early days now it’s more ‘the horse has very much bolted off ..) but nothing to lose in still trying this - coffee is THE healthiest thing people on my shoes can consume for this type of cancer

I DETEST coffee and always have .. i’ve had about 3 or four cups in my whole life .. and those ones not only tasted awful but gave me the shakes , worst migraine and sickness and bad tummy

Genuine question MN’s - can you (or have any of you) hated coffee and made yourself fall in love with it or even tolerated it ?

I love the idea of being a NORMAL person (cause i’m fully aware i’m the abnormal one as everyone loves coffee I believe) and to love coffee and to meet friends for coffee , to appreciate a nice mug of coffee, to have that ‘coffee kick ‘ in the mornings, to enjoy coffee from independent small family owned coffee houses to discover different coffees etc

And now my cancer doctors and nurses are telling me it will only be a good thing for me to drink the stuff so thought would ask you which coffee machines you have ?

i ask as hospital say the instant stuff isn’t really the ‘best’

I love the idea of the touch screen machines BUT they’re crazy expensive (especially for a now single mother , very poorly so had to give up my amazing career and living off savings which has trickled like water AND uber pricey for a coffee HATER 😄)

Now I know (or think ) that the machines that are coffee beans to cup are the best and the pod machines are frowned upon (especially with those who know and love their coffee!)
but I have two boys too and they hate coffee .. so do you think a pod one would be best ?

I’ve had a tassimo in the past (mainly for hot chocolate for my then very little boys and sometimes myself )

My budget is ideally not over £250 (i’ve just moved and finished furnishing my apartment and now I think i need to rob a bank just to live 😄) and have been looking into
Tassimo
Lavazza
L’Or
Nespresso

Plus bonus points - cream coloured /retro look
easy to use (not a faff)
milk frother (don’t think these come with pod machines though - i could be wrong ..,)
also to have pods that have different choices of coffees so maybe I could (force myself ) to actually like a type of coffee ☕️

Also a machine with pods and/or the machine itself that can make a lovejy hot chocolate
pods that include mocha’s/ cappuccino etc

thank you (if you’ve got this far!) for reading and I’m ready to order a machine asap just thought would ask for any pointers

thank you - CocoBella :)

I'm so very sorry about your diagnosis.

I'm someone who absolutely loves coffee. Not a fan of espresso though, I definitely prefer filter coffee. I have the Buckingham Russell Hobbs machine, (nothing fancy or expensive I think it was £60?) and get the Taylors of Harrogate ground coffee from the supermarket, preferably a 3 or 4 roast as they're smoother. Their decaf is also very tasty.

I love a cup of hot coffee with a generous dash of unsweetened oat milk, just so tasty and cozy. The Minor Figures oat milk is my favourite, when not discounted I go for Alpro or Oatly.

Optional brown sugar to make it a bit sweeter if you want - for me the sweetness of the oat milk is enough.

Sending warm thoughts 🧡

Summerhillsquare · Today 08:22
Disappointed my comment was deleted, presumably after reporting by the alternative health brigade. Even the weblinks shared show very weak associations, "may be" beneficial and so on. This is giving people false hope

Everyone - thank you for your supportive and very kind replies and advice

Sadly and very disappointingly @Summerhillsquare had her message removed because not only did she imply I was bordering ‘dangerous’ for saying ‘coffee is a cure for cancer’ ( when i never implied such a thing!! if anything i’ve actually said my case is now terminal so it’s so far down the road i said that there ISNT a cure !)
but she also said my post isn’t genuine and that im lying!

I even said to MN Headquarters that i’ll show all my diagnosis letters etc ! I actually believe im speaking with people saying such things!

@Summerhillsquare would you like me to send private documents to you ? or tell you about my oldest sensitive lovely boy that couldn’t concentrate on his GCSE exam papers and he’s predicted As! and the school are so lovely they’re looking into his exams as he couldn’t even concentrate and it’s not his fault! If some coffee can even make me feel half human for the week or ‘buy’ me energy to make some memories with my boys then what’s the harm in saying ‘hi coco - this coffee sounds great for you etc’ or just scroll on ! BUT to say I’m LYING ?? and then when MN ‘headquarters’ remove your message come BACK ON HERE to say that YOU’RE ‘disappointed’ that your message has been taken down ??!! Honestly I don’t even know what to say to you ??

Please don't stress yourself OP?! You deserve to enjoy your day! 💐💐

Snowless · 23/07/2024 10:08

Nespresso Machine and the milk frother . Buy a little plastic thing to punch out the coffee and wash the aluminium and put in recycling. Coffee grounds are good for the garden.

VeryHappyBunny · 23/07/2024 10:16

I have had liver problems (not cancer) but early failure and reduced function, so in addition to stopping drinking alcohol I take Milk Thistle. This does not claim to cure anything but it helps liver function. I get the Vogel's one and you just add 15 drops to water and take this 3 times a day. You can have this along with your coffee. As I say, this is just to help the liver function. Check that there are no contra-indications with your specific medication, I think most pharmacists can do this.

You are in a truly horrible situation and if people on here can't be helpful or supportive they shouldn't say anything.

fishonabicycle · 23/07/2024 10:19

Use a cafetiere! Much cheaper and you can try loads of different types without forking out hundreds of pounds.

Wahine24 · 23/07/2024 10:23

Hey @CocoBellaSparkle you don't need a fancy matching that takes up space, needs cleaning, needs specialist whatever! Just get a french press or a dripper that sits over you cup , ( charity shops always have french presses ) start with something not to robust, there are numbers on the packet indicating strength of the beans ( if you buy whole you will need to grind) buy one type and try that, don't buy loads it dull just get confusing ( if you don't like it, you can freeze it and give to friends/olio etc, freezing the beans keeps it fresh)

CocoBellaSparkle · 23/07/2024 10:25

thank you everyone and apologies that i haven’t individually commented/tagged thanked you .. all your lovely kind words and your helpful advice or coffees and types and machines and the caffetire versions (my mum has this !)

Also i will write back as you didn’t need to share your own experiences but you did .. like the lovely poster who had breast C .. and how she was told about coffee .. if i’d never been this poorly then i’d be nearly 4 decades on this earth and i’d still have thought coffee is one of those ‘treats’ that’s not actually good for you! My liver consultants live off the stuff as they have newly fresh lively smelling coffees brought to them in the consultation room! Going to take screen shots and notes and search online to start ordering!

ps - love that a nice commenter said ‘if you try any food or drink 8 times you can learn to love / like or tolerate it ‘ love this! As i can tell people straightway what i can’t stand the taste if but i know i’ve probably only tasted these particular things once if not twice ! after 8 times i guess it can become like a good healthy habit …

i’ll let my post trickle down now on the aibu and give others the chance to write their own posts without me bombarding the page!!

thank you 😄☺️💗

Thank you for the netflix recommendations, will get them added to my list!

We really have no idea of the medicinal benefits of foods/plants/herbs etc. It's such a shame all this knowledge has been lost going down the generations. Conversely, look how sick it makes us consuming the wrong types of food (or additives and rubbish I should say).

Don’t want to derail the OPs thread (apologies OP) and I’m NOT saying herbal supplements or alternative medicine cures, but our medicines originated in/from plants. We know a tiny fraction of ethnobotanical and pharmacological properties of medicinal plants and it’s a shame that we’re tearing up and concreting over areas of significant biodiversity. Madagascar for one.

PieonaBarm · 23/07/2024 10:33

Contact these guys, they're in Lancashire, but they roast and grind their beans and will be able to advise on where to start if you tell them why you want to start drinking coffee, they're really helpful and lovely people. They also do coffee bags (like tea bags but with coffee) which might be easier.

Their Christmas blend is wicked, and I'm
not a massive coffee lover but have grown to like it over the last few years - I started with Mocha's - I love a peppermint one - and gradually went to coffee on its own

Mumwithbaggage · 23/07/2024 11:29

I love coffee so probably not the best to answer your question - my neighbour loathes coffee but very strangely loves an affogato. Maybe everything tastes better with ice cream? Equally dd will make iced coffee with oat milk. Not for me, but might be worth a few experiments.

Wahine24 · 23/07/2024 11:45
  • machine not matching thanks autocorrect :)
YOYOK · 23/07/2024 11:47

I’m so sorry to hear about your diagnosis and I wish you all the best.💐 You’ve had a few disgraceful comments but handled them with dignity which says huge amounts about you.

I don’t know if this helps at all or maybe I’m just very weird. I don’t really enjoy coffee except iced coffee, which I really love! Might be an option for you…? Nothing to lose.

User79853257976 · 23/07/2024 11:48

Get one that can take the old style pods (the ones you can buy in supermarkets). They are cheaper and you can get Starbucks and Costa ones x

CovfefeFrother · 23/07/2024 12:31

@CocoBellaSparkle i haven’t read the full thread, apologies if I am repeating other people. But I wanted to take the time to respond because I also don’t like coffee, and have found a way to like it and have a cup every morning. Won’t go into reasons here, nothing like yours. Really sorry about your diagnosis.

I am signed up to the Yawn Brew Coffee Club. This has helped me learn which coffee notes I like (chocolate! Anything that’s says chocolate) and hate (dark caramel, molasses yeeuuch). https://yawnbrew.com/collections/yawn-coffee-club Yawn Brew are also absolutely lovely when I’ve contacted them for advice or information about mg of caffeine in the coffee, so I am highly recommending them on that. They do an advent calendar each year and selection packs, if you message them they might send you out a left over advent calendar or stock for this December. The advent calendars are “teabag” style coffee so easier to make. yawnbrew.com/collections/coffee-advent-calendar-line-up-1

What is it that you don’t like about coffee? I would never get a coffee machine because it is the bitter after taste I hate. This is to do with the high temperature of the water, which a machine forces it through. I use a French press and put the water in after a minute or two of it having boiled in the kettle. This also means your coffee is less strong and not giving you that heady buzz. You can control the portions, unlike the pods. I have come across a lot of coffee machines at fancy work places, hotels etc and I’ve never met one I like.

There are loads of guides online for troubleshooting the taste you don’t like out of your coffee. For me it was the temperature of the water, but then I put more coffee in to counteract that lower temperature gets less taste and caffeine out the grounds. Ones like this but this one is very technical, there’s more editorial magazine style ones out there too. https://www.betterbrew.coffee/french-press-articles/troubleshooting-french-press
https://www.frenchpresscoffee.com/blogs/perfect-cup-of-coffee/how-to-make-perfect-french-press-coffee-brew-guide-and-tips

I bought a milk frother and use this everyday. This makes the drink the perfect texture to drink and really enjoyable. I have the Nespresso Aerocinno 3 which does hot milk and froth milk for latte. The Aerocinno 4 is dishwasher safe and has another milk foam option for airier milk for cappuccinos. https://www.libertylondon.com/uk/x-liberty-limited-edition-aeroccino3-milk-frother-000807433.html

£89 for Aerocinno
£10 coffee club
£5 for a one cup French press

@CovfefeFrother

This is such a lovely, helpful reply for the OP ... even though I don't like coffee!

zingally · 23/07/2024 12:48

I "trained myself" to like coffee when I was 18 and about to head off to uni. I figured it was the socially normal thing to like at least one of the tea/coffee combo.
I went for coffee purely because that's what my parents preferred, so that's what we had in the house.

I started off with lots of milk and lots of sugar, and gradually toned it down to a "normal" about of a glug of milk and one sugar.

Mochas might be the way forward for you. They are just hot chocolates with a shot of espresso in. You can hardly taste it.

Or you might want to go in hard and just start with small shots of espresso, and mentally frame it like a yucky medicine that you just have to throw back and think of England.

Coconutter24 · 23/07/2024 13:14

Illbethereforyouuu · 23/07/2024 08:19

I'm sure the OP is intelligent enough to have already considered all of this. Bit of a shitty comment from you, OP was asking about coffee machines, not whether you think she should just enjoy what time she has left 🤯

I didn’t get the feeling from OPs response that my question was shitty! It was a genuine question, I wondered why someone would force themselves to have something they detest when surely now’s the time to have everything you love. OP kindly answered

Wordsmithery · 23/07/2024 14:13

OP, just wanted to say your post was very honest and brave, and I'm so sorry it seems some horrible people take any opportunity to have a go. Well done for reporting. (I don't know anything about coffee so no help there, I'm afraid.) Please accept these beautiful flowers 🌺 🌹 🌻

spinningplates2024 · 23/07/2024 14:25

I have to confess to not reading the full thread @CocoBellaSparkle but if not liking coffee is because you have less sophisticated tastes (me) then a latte with a couple of sugars or flavoured syrup is a good way to go. The milky sweet coffee (if you are trying to be low in the sugar department sweeteners or you get sugar free syrups). You sound really warm and lovely and I really hope you have quality time with your boys. I’m so sorry to hear it will be limited it’s not bloody fair.

FalderalderaldoSittingintheWater · 23/07/2024 08:02

Anecdotally your key word there
I was asking for peer-reviwed evidence
I am well aware of both the benefits and downsides of coffee

Im saying anecdotally because its people telling me what their own doctor has said, I wasnt there, so didnt witness that. But I have no reason to disbelieve people

I also understand the benefits and downsides of coffee, Im not meant to drink it myself, I do on occasion although I shouldnt.

CocoBellaSparkle · 23/07/2024 18:55

@Wordsmithery thank you so much! it was worth some really really nasty replies to get sooo many lovely and kind and helpful responses! thank you

@Kinneddar @Wordsmithery ive got this lady Kinneddar sending me private messages saying ‘so many MNs are privately thanking me for saying what i’ve said to you!

so @Kinneddar has read this thread and commented that i’m lying and i’m working for lavazza and using this thread as a ‘sob story’ to get people to buy lavazza coffee machines!! and then MNs are privately ‘thanking’ her for saying this! It’s like something from a school playground ! why can’t they just scroll on by .. some people i will never understand..

thank you and been spoilt for choice with recommendations and actually learnt so much about coffee today 😃💗

@spinningplates2024 thank you! My big boy says ‘mum you’re going to defy the odds .. you’re going to get a miracle mum!’

I don’t know if he believes this but i have to blame the dust (just moved again as can’t any longer afford the old place ) so i pretend cough and ‘oh it’s dust ‘ line as he’s too clever for the onions line these days 😄 but in saying this there’s also a lot of ‘denial’ and just trying to live in the here and now (which i find soo difficult because if im not thinking about something in the past im definitely thinking of the future .. our rescue older collie .. i need to learn from her as dogs live in the moment .. beautiful souls

sashh · 24/07/2024 04:29

I've not read all the comments since yesterday but looking at the length of some posts it looks like you have good advice so I'll add a couple of things just a couple of things.

If you get beans or ground coffee keep it in the fridge.

And do you like tiramisu? The bottom layer is savoiardi (sponge biscuits) soaked in strong coffee. It should also have a coffee liqueur but maybe skip that if it is your morning brew.

I'm sorry you had some negative comments and when the thread was hidden I didn't see why.
