Third trimester, I know it's not recommended but ... really fancy a glass of wine. Would you?

Genuinely shocked at the amount of people saying they would drink alcohol whilst pregnant. Are you really that desperate for an alcoholic drink?! It's just not worth the risk

What risk is there from drinking a small glass of wine?

Lavender14 · 20/07/2024 20:00

I wouldn't. I understand the risks are very low but I personally didn't feel comfortable doing that.

mylittleitalianhome · 20/07/2024 20:01

Yep, absolutely. 7 months pregnant here and have a small glass of wine a couple of times a week. Here in Italy, a drink with a meal is seen as totally acceptable for pregnant women. Read Expecting Better for a brilliant breakdown of the studies surrounding alcohol in pregnancy.

I personally would not. Even if there is very minimal risk from one glass of wine. You wouldn't think it was acceptable for a baby to drink wine would you? What you drink, the baby drinks.

Can you elaborate on the science behind this?

Laura7899 · 20/07/2024 20:03

No I wouldn’t

’Theres no safe amount’ is because it’s not deemed ethical to run trials on pregnant women and babies.

If alcohol was so toxic one small glass of wine could permanently damage your baby, we would know about it.

A small glass once a week is fine.

Really and what medical qualifications do you have to make that statement. Medical advice is to abstain.

DancingLions · 20/07/2024 20:03

These message boards are full of women who did everything "right" and still had DC with SEN, health issues etc.

So the only question you have to ask yourself is this "would I feel guilty and blame myself if everything wasn't 100% ok" some people would, some would just accept it as not their fault (which in all likelihood it wasnt). Which camp you fall into gives you your answer.

Because as you can see, the answers are very divided. So it's up to you as to what you feel comfortable with.

Wow! What an awful thing to say! Very judgmental and rude! Would you say the same about a bit of chocolate or other things! Wanting the occasional glass isn’t lacking in self control!

There really is no risk with one small glass of wine. In plenty of places in Europe, it’s completely acceptable to drink with a meal, with no increase in rates of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome.

BlackStrayCat · 20/07/2024 20:04

16 years ago 1 or 2 glasses once or twice a week was NICE guidelines.

Guinness used to be recommended.

For me, nutrition was the most important.

A glass of wine isn’t going to hurt. Enjoy.

GigiAnnna · 20/07/2024 20:06

I'm a drinker, I enjoy a bottle of wine probably more than is advised, but during pregnancy, it was the last thing I was thinking about. I worried about my babies throughout all my pregnancies and did everything by the book just because I know if anything had gone wrong I'd beat myself up forever about it. But I've always prioritised my children over my own needs, so maybe it's that.

Differentstarts · 20/07/2024 20:06

I drank daily and did a lot worse for half my pregnancy with my eldest and she's fine. Obviously don't do that but 1 glass won't do any harm. Enjoy

mylittleitalianhome · 20/07/2024 20:07

That’s not how it works. You wouldn’t give a baby a cup of coffee, but it’s absolutely fine to drink one yourself in pregnancy.

MultiplaLight · 20/07/2024 19:03

Yes. Absolutely no guilt. Read the research, no harm.

Can you share some? I’ve never come across a study where expecting mums are given alcohol to see where the upper limit is

pleasehelpwi3 · 20/07/2024 20:07

No, why risk even an iota of harm

Scoobyblue · 20/07/2024 20:08

I would say that it’s fine. Enjoy.

GoldFrame · 20/07/2024 20:08

Yes, I did, it’s fine!

LashingsOfLemonCurd · 20/07/2024 20:08

I had a nice cold glass of white in early labour. The midwife suggested it 😂

Marmalade1987 · 20/07/2024 20:09

For those saying it won’t do any harm, you literally have no evidence to say there is 0% risk of harm. - although happy to be corrected if you do - survivor bias doesn’t count

so for the sake of indulging in something unnecessary, no, I wouldn’t

Yes! I had a lovely glass of rjoca when my waters broke. I had forgot that!

Exactly. I did drink very occasionally in my pregnancies. I think I had three small glasses of wine throughout my entire pregnancy but felt no guilt whatsoever. In many parts of the world a glass of wine with a meal is completely acceptable for pregnant women. From what I understand, they only changed the NICE guidelines (relatively recently) because they have never tested a safe upper limit. That's totally understandable but doesn't mean that the odd alcoholic drink will do any harm to a foetus whatsoever.

Yanbu. Out and out hysteria in evidence on this thread!

ClarenceH · 20/07/2024 20:11

Please read about FASD. The research clearly states that any alcohol is detrimental.

Rugs1 · 20/07/2024 20:13
