Too similar sibling names

My daughter is Charlotte and i am expecting my second, another girl, due in October. Charlotte's middle name is Pearl and the new baby's would be Opal. I really like the name Colette and I think it goes really well with Charlotte with the similar structure but different soundings. I also like the names Chloe and Nicole but I would still strongly prefer Colette over them. Is it too similar?

I wouldn't have 2 siblings with the same initial first name. It causes problems with post . It's bad enough in my house with DH and DS1 with the same initial. Official letters don't tend to use middle names or initials, and privacy will become an issue.

Saltedbutter · 21/07/2024 12:13

Cara Rose is beautiful.

BooBooDoodle · 21/07/2024 17:53

Charlotte is lovely but not keen on Opal or Colette. Just appear quite old/granny like to me but personal taste. Personal ick of mine is folk having kids all starting with the same letter. Bit chav to be honest. I know a family with 5 kids all starting with a K. All have the same initials which must make paperwork/letters at home a ruddy nightmare.

I like Constance, Octavia, Cornelia. I like older names.

Constance is beautiful 🤩

Don't got for Claire. That's not a pretty name.

I had a discussion with DH and the new baby will be Cara Rose!

Doesn't flow well... ra-ro in the middle

The baby isn't due until October a full name doesn't need to be chosen now

BlueFlowers5 · 21/07/2024 19:12

Clare Opal?

Catherine Ruby?

ForBetterForWorseOrNot · 21/07/2024 19:13

Personally I wouldn't use the same initial because as they grow up and start to receive post at home is it is sent to miss c surname then you will not know which child the post belongs to without opening it.

Gingernan · 21/07/2024 19:43

I don't think they sound very similar at all, they will be nice together

Havinganamechange · 21/07/2024 19:53

Way too similar imo.

Rhaenys · 21/07/2024 20:00

I don’t think they’re too similar and I’m usually quite picky about that sort of this. I think because the emphasis is on different syllables you can get away with it.

CHAR-lotte
Co-LETTE

I was going to say if Colette was pronounce CO-lette, it might be too similar, but after sounding it out, I don’t think it is actually.

Kpp2 · 21/07/2024 20:14

Haha when the going gets tough you’ll be calling them all sorts. Hopefully you haven’t got a dog. I’ve got a Nathan and an Aidan and on occasions one of them is called Nadian, Aithan and if I’m seriously stressed the dogs name.

gabsdot45 · 21/07/2024 20:17

If you like the names then go for it. They're both very pretty names and I don't think they're too alike
I'm 18 months older than my sister and we have similar names. We often get called by the others name but that happens in familes whatever the names are.

JustMeAndTheFish · 21/07/2024 20:38

Given that I have twins called Jennifer and Jessica I can’t possibly comment! It wasn’t planned to have two Js but when we eliminated names from our list they were the ones we both liked. They do have middle names but I’m heartily fed up with correspondence addressed to Miss J ….

Mummadeze · 21/07/2024 21:04

I don’t see them as similar at all. I think you are overthinking it.

We live in an area where mail has your full name in it so its not a problem for us! My main concern is for them to have separate identities but I really love both names! If sound-wise it isnt too similar then ill go for colette.

Why bother asking the question?

That’s ridiculous - whether your full name or initial only appears on mail, does not depend on where you live. It’s whatever people decide to write.

Iamwhoiamwhoareyou · 21/07/2024 21:48

It may have been said (haven’t read all through) but given names are likely to be abbreviated (whether wanted or not lol) they would be Char/Cole…charcoal

They are both lovely names and I’d have no hesitations using them together :)

Fireangels · 21/07/2024 22:22

MyBluntSloth · 20/07/2024 05:52

DH and I are set on both girls starting with C!

So both your girls will be Miss C Sloth?
If they receive mail how would they know who the intended recipient is? More so if mail is confidential.
I do also think Charlotte and Colette are a bit similar.

VickyPollard25 · 21/07/2024 22:35

Bristolnewcomer · 20/07/2024 05:41

In think too similar, unless you’re planning to call your first one Charlie from straight off. My measure is that if you call their names they should be able to tell from upstairs which one it is.

I don’t understand Charlottes who choose to be Charlie’s. Charlotte is so beautiful. Charlie is so ugly! (IMO)

Bobloblaw84 · 21/07/2024 22:41

Try Celeste?

HowIrresponsible · 21/07/2024 22:55

She's chosen Cara Rose. Months in advance with no urgency

sidebirds · 21/07/2024 23:22

Both Charlotte and Colette are beautiful names. By no means too similar; however there is a hint of similarity - and this might have the additional benefit of according a subliminal extra bond between the two sisters. Stick with it!
