Too similar sibling names

My daughter is Charlotte and i am expecting my second, another girl, due in October. Charlotte's middle name is Pearl and the new baby's would be Opal. I really like the name Colette and I think it goes really well with Charlotte with the similar structure but different soundings. I also like the names Chloe and Nicole but I would still strongly prefer Colette over them. Is it too similar?

How weird 😁

@willWillSmithsmith

I know! My nanna was Hannah Matilda, her sister was Hannah Marie. But, to differentiate between them both my nanna was known as Mary and her sister was known as Nancy!

Such a strange to-do because it wasn't even as if the name Hannah had a sentimental reason behind it, my great-nanna just liked the name Hannah!

RedFaerieBoots · 20/07/2024 17:33

I agree they look too similar and I don't think either of the first names you mentioned going well with Opal as a middle name.

What about Camellia? It's a flower name and I think it flows ok with Opal.

You never know what will happen in the future. You all or your girls might move away and having options for shorter names that aren't similar is a good to have in the bank. I say that as a the younger me absolutely hated her full name...have come to appreciate as an adult but I still go with a shorter version (much to the parents annoyance).

No sorry we want something classy and elegant!

Catriona? Claire?

Hillarious · 20/07/2024 17:53

Charlotte Pearl is nice enough. If your baby, Colette Opal, was presented to me, I’d politely say “very nice too”, but asking my opinion beforehand I’d have to be honest and say it sounds too contrived and more about you showing how clever you are for coming up with matching names.

That is a very unique story 😁 my aunts (all sisters) were called by names that were not their first or middle names, I thought that was odd too.

TheWayTheLightFalls · 20/07/2024 18:54

I have two with the same first initial and it’s a pain. I thought I chose different enough names that I wouldn’t constantly be shouting “Jamie* - No, Jenny! Come here” but I am, all the fucking time.

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 20/07/2024 17:11

I agree with this.

Charlotte is a timeless classic.

Colette is the French equivalent of Sheila or Barbara (briefly very popular in the 1930s, practically unheard of today).

They're not the same vibe at all.

In England (or English speaking countries) I don’t think (imho) Colette has the same vibe as Sheila or Barbara. Maybe it does in France but not here - in the same way names like Hilda, Gladys, Vera are ‘old lady’ names here but still used in South America.

Colette is a lovely name in its own right and a name I earmarked if I’d had a girl.

I'm going Ireland or US? Although the Irish people I know with those names are over 50, and hate their names. Annette goes by Annie. So probably US.

Edited

Definitely not Ireland! As you say, in Ireland Colette and Annette are very much names for women in their 50s and 60s ...cannot imagine a baby with either name

DinosaurWhizz · 20/07/2024 20:22

If you want a similar sound I'd go for a different first letter. Shirley, Sheila? Both a similar era and vibe to Colette

salamithumbs · 20/07/2024 20:23

Anyway I do think Charlotte and Colette are too similar OP but I really like Caroline or Cara Rose! You could even use Cara as a nickname for Caroline.
I also like Cassie, Cassia, Clara, Callista and Celeste

Hankunamatata · 20/07/2024 20:42

I think they are a bit similar.

Only issue husband had with same initials was that mail came they didn't know who it was for wnd there was a couple big arguments over opening eqxh others mail and finding out stuff they didn't want sibling to know

I just think it would be nice to have some similarities in their names, just making sure im not going too far

Why though? My two have no similarities in their names. I have a couple of friends who have three children each, none have similar names. It’s your choice of course but I’m not understanding why it seems ‘nice’.

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 20/07/2024 22:08

Far too similar, I'm sorry.

My daughter and our dog have similar short names ending in the same vowel sound. EVERYONE mixes them up when they are in the same place.

Please don't do it. So many beautiful names. Choose another.

ttcat37 · 20/07/2024 22:58

Have you already had your A and B litters?

MyBluntSloth · 21/07/2024 00:36

I had a discussion with DH and the new baby will be Cara Rose!

That's great, what a beautiful name! Good decision x

Niiina · 21/07/2024 07:15

I second the name 'Celine' that @willWillSmithsmith suggested! So timeless, girly and classic (and French like Colette.

Charlotte and Celine!

Charlotte Pearl and Celine Rose? @MyBluntSloth

Niiina · 21/07/2024 07:17

Sorry @MyBluntSloth, just caught your update. Cara Rose is also beautiful, lovely choice. Hope you're having a healthy pregnancy. How many weeks are you?

This made me laugh more than it should.
Probanly because I think Coleen Nolan is the opposite of classy and elegant. 😂

Thanks for your endorsement 😊 I also think Celine is a beautiful, classy name and goes very well with Charlotte.

Just saw you’re using Cara Rose. Glad you’re both happy with your choice. 👍

Spacespice · 21/07/2024 11:46

They are lovely names.

timoteigirl · 21/07/2024 11:57

Cara Rose is great.

SummerTimeIsTheBest · 21/07/2024 11:58

Does it matter? They’re two different people.

Does it matter? They’re two different people.

It does when they'll be living together for about 20 years.
